Lunar mining of oxygen using fluorine

An important aspect of lunar mining will be the extraction of volatiles, particularly oxygen, from lunar rocks. Thermodynamic data show that oxygen could readily be recovered by fluorination of abundant lunar anorthite, CaAl2Si2O8. Fluorine is the most reactive element, and the only reagent able to extract 100 percent of the oxygen from any mineral, yet it can safely be stored or reacted in nickel or iron containers. The general fluorination reaction, mineral + 2F2 = mixed fluorides = O2, has been used for more than 30 years at a laboratory scale by stable-isotope geochemists. For anorthite, metallic Al and Si may be recovered from the mixed fluorides by Na-reduction, and CaO via exchange with Na2O; the resulting NaF may be recycled into F2 and Na by electrolysis, using lanthanide-doped CaF2 as the inert anode.

Lunar mining of oxygen using fluorine

Experiments during the first year of the project were directed towards generating elemental fluorine via the electrolysis of anhydrous molten fluorides. Na2SiF6 was dissolved in either molten NaBF4 or a eutectic (minimum-melting) mixture of KF-LiF-NaF and electrolyzed between 450 and 600 C to Si metal at the cathode and F2 gas at the anode. Ar gas was continuously passed through the system and F2 was trapped in a KBr furnace. Various anode and cathode materials were investigated. Despite many experimental difficulties, the capability of the process to produce elemental fluorine was demonstrated.

Vector representation of lithium and other mica compositions

In contrast to mathematics, where a vector of one component defines a line, in chemical petrology a one-component system is a point, and two components are needed to define a line, three for a plane, and four for a space. Here, an attempt is made to show how these differences in the definition of a component can be resolved, with lithium micas used as an example. In particular, the condensed composition space theoretically accessible to Li-Fe-Al micas is shown to be an irregular three-dimensional polyhedron, rather than the triangle Al(3+)-Fe(2+)-Li(+), used by some researchers. This result is demonstrated starting with the annite composition and using exchange operators graphically as vectors that generate all of the other mica compositions.

The Black Pearl mine, Arizona - Wolframite veins and stockscheider pegmatite related to an albitic stock

Wolframite-bearing quartz veins flanked by greisen alteration occur at and near the Black Pearl mine, Yavapai County, Arizona. The veins are genetically related to a small albitite stock, and cut a series of Proterozoic metasedimentary and intrusive rocks. The largest vein, the only one mined, is located at the apex of the stock. Field relations imply that this stock is a late-stage differentiate of time 1.4-Ga anorogenic Lawler Peak batholith, which crops out about 3 km to the south. The albitites are of igneous origin and have suffered only minor deuteric alteration. A thin (1 to 2 m) pegmatite unit ('stockscheider') occurs at the contact of the Black Pearl Albitite stock with the country rocks. Directional indicators and other evidence suggest that the pegmatite was formed in the presence of a volatile-rich fluid phase close to the time of magma emplacement. The sudden change from coarse-grained microcline-rich pegmatite to fine-grained, albite-rich albitite suggests pressure quenching, possibly due to escape of fluids up the Black Pearl vein. Stockscheider-like textures typically occur near the apical contacts of productive plutons. The presence or absence of this texture is a useful guide in prospecting for lithophile metal deposits.

Vector representation of tourmaline compositions

The vector method for representing mineral compositions of amphibole and mica groups is applied to the tourmaline group. Consideration is given to the methods for drawing the relevant vector diagrams, relating the exchange vectors to one another, and contouring the diagrams for constant values of Na, Ca, Li, Fe, Mg, Al, Si, and OH. The method is used to depict a wide range of possible tourmaline end-member compositions and solid solutions, starting from a single point. In addition to vector depictions of multicomponent natural tourmalines, vectors are presented for simpler systems such as (Na,Al)-tourmalines, alkali-free tourmalines, and elbaites.

Ongonite and topazite dikes in the Flying W ranch area, Tonto basin, Arizona

The petrogenesis of the topaz-rich ongonite and topazite dikes in the Flying W ranch area (Tonto basin, Arizona) was investigated, and the possible origin of the topaz in the Flying W rhyolite is discussed. The field, textural geochemical, and mineralogical characteristics of the topaz-bearing dikes in the Flying W ranch area all were found to support the genesis of the topaz-bearing bodies from a magma. The evidence obtained contradicts an origin for these rock types by greisenization or veining.

Planet Alsioff - A problem set for students of phase equilibria or metamorphic petrology

This paper presents a problem set that contains questions for students of phase equilibria or metamorphic petrology concerning a hypothetical planet Alsioff, for which incomplete data are given. On this panet, the SiF4 is the major volatile and Al, Si, O, and F are the only elements present. Progressive metamorphism on Alsioff mainly involves devolatilization of fluid SiF4. The problem set includes ten questions. Some of these are concerned with possible chemical reactions that should affect water, wollastonite, or Ca-SiO3 exposed to the atmosphere of Alsioff; the mechanism of controls of the O2 and F2 contents of the Alsioffian atmosphere; and the devolatilization reactions involving SiF4 with progressive thermal metamorphism.

Stability of genthelvite, Zn4(BeSiO4)3S - An exercise in chalcophilicity using exchange operators

Phase relations involving genthelvite are studied on the basis of physical-chemical principles and natural occurrences. Stability diagrams and exchange operators are considered as well as an extended system, natural associations, and solid state relations. It is noted that the extremely high chalcophilicity of Zn explains, in part, why genthelvite is such as rare mineral. It is only somewhat more stable than willemite and is therefore restricted to the extremely low-S environments provided by alkaline granites and syenites.
