Three-dimensional solutions for thermomechanical stresses in sandwich panels and shells

Analytic three-dimensional thermoelasticity solutions are presented for static problems of simply supported sandwich panels and cylindrical shells subjected to mechanical and thermal loads. The panels and shells have laminated composite face sheets of arbitrary thickness separated by a core. Each of the individual layers of the face sheets and the core is modeled as a three-dimensional continuum. Analytic first-order sensitivity coefficients are evaluated to assess the sensitivity of the responses to variations in material parameters of the face sheets and the core, as well as to variations in the curvatures and thicknesses of the sandwich and face sheets. Also, the strain energy associated with various stress components in the face sheets and core are calculated and compared. The information obtained in the present study can aid the development and assessment of two-dimensional models for sandwich structures and illuminate the role of particular material parameters in an equivalent model for the core.

Assessment of computational models for multilayered composite shells

A review is made of the different approaches used for modeling multilayered composite shells. Discussion focuses on different approaches for developing two-dimensional shear deformation theories; classification of two-dimensional theories based on introducing plausible displacement, strain and/or stress assumptions in the thickness direction; first-order shear deformation theories based on linear displacement assumptions in the thickness coordinate; and efficient computational strategies for anisotropic composite shells. Extensive numerical results are presented showing the effects of variation in the lamination and geometric parameters of simply supported composite cylinders on the accuracy of the static and vibrational responses predicted by eight different modeling approaches (based on two-dimensional shear deformation theories).

Three-dimensional solutions for antisymmetrically laminated anisotropic plates

Analytic three-dimensional elasticity solutions are presented for the stress and free vibration problems of multilayered anisotropic plates. The plates are assumed to have rectangular geometry and antisymmetric lamination with respect to the middle plane. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the six stress components and the three displacement components of the plate. Each of the plate variables is decomposed into symmetric and antisymmetric components in the thickness direction, and is expressed in terms of a double Fourier series in the Cartesian surface coordinates. Extensive numerical results are presented showing the effects of variation in the lamination and geometric parameters of composite plates on the importance of the transverse stress and strain components.

Assessment of computational models for multilayered anisotropic plates

The accuracy of the static and vibrational responses of multilayer anisotropic plates, predicted by eight modeling approaches based on two-dimensional shear-deformation theories, was investigated as a function of the lamination and geometric parameters of the shells. The models used included two-dimensional global approximation models, two-dimensional discrete-layer models, and predictor-corrector models. It is shown that the accuracy of the stress and vibrational responses predicted by the different models is strongly dependent on the significance of the transverse shear deformations.

Analysis of multilayered anisotropic plates - A new look at an old problem

The paper is concerned with the effects of variation in the lamination and geometric parameters of multilayered anisotropic plates on the accuracy of the static and vibrational responses predicted by six modeling approaches based on two-dimensional shear deformation theories. Extensive numerical results are presented for antisymmetrically laminated anisotropic rectangular plates. It is shown that, for most practical problems, the transverse shear deformation has a much more pronounced effect on the response of multilayered composite plates than that of transverse normal strain and stress. It is also shown that the accuracy of the predictions of the first-order deformation theory is strongly dependent on the values of the composite shear correction factors used.

Stress and free vibration analyses of multilayered composite plates

This paper presents a two-phase computational procedure for the accurate prediction of vibration frequencies, stresses, and deformations in simply supported bidirectional multilayered composite plates. The range of applicability of this procedure in terms of the plate's parameters is determined, and the potential of the proposed procedure for use in conjunction with large-scale finite element modeling of composite structures is discussed. It is shown that the use of the shear correction factors calculated by this procedure extends the range of the validity of the first-order shear deformation theory, used in the first phase of the procedure, to fairly thick multilayered plates with the h/L1 ratio of the order of 0.3.

Assessment of shear deformation theories for multilayered composite plates

A review is made of the different approaches used for modeling multilayered composite plates. Discussion focuses on different approaches for developing two-dimensional shear deformation theories; classification of two-dimensional theories based on introducing plausible displacement, strain and/or stress assumptions in the thickness direction; and first-order shear deformation theories based on linear displacement assumptions in the thickness coordinate. Extensive numerical results are presented showing the effects of variation in the lamination and geometric parameters of simply supported composite plates on the accuracy of the static and vibrational responses predicted by six different modeling approaches (based on two-dimensional shear deformation theories). The standard of comparison is taken to be the exact three-dimensional elasticity solutions. Some of the future directions for research on the modeling of multilayered composite plates are outlined.
