When Deployable Spacecraft Antennas Don’t
The objective of this paper is to explore possibilities for continued use of certain deployable spacecraft antennas when full deployment fails. Four (4) deployables are used as examples, including 1) a reflectarray, 2) a parabolic reflector, 3) a loop, and 4) a set of 4 monopoles. The measure of “continued usability” in each case is relative antenna gain as a function of partial deployment. Note, types (and levels) of partial deployment presented here are strictly hypothetical. Also, discussions of actual deployment mechanisms are considered outside the scope of this paper.

Target & Propagation Models for the FINDER Radar
Finding persons still alive in piles of rubble following an earthquake, a severe storm, or other disaster is a difficult problem. JPL is currently developing a victim detection radar called FINDER (Finding Individuals in Emergency and Response). The subject of this paper is directed toward development of propagation & target models needed for simulation & testing of such a system. These models are both physical (real rubble piles) and numerical. Early results from the numerical modeling phase show spatial and temporal spreading characteristics when signals are passed through a randomly mixed rubble pile.
Antenna auto-calibration and metrology approach for AFRL/JPL space based radar
We present an auto-calibration and metrology system concept to correct for phase errors and mechanical deformation during the misssion.
Advanced geostationary radar for hurricane monitoring and studies
The current Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) are equipped to make cloud top measurements only. In contrast, a millimeter-wave radar allows 3-D measurements of precipitation associated with hurricanes and other convective systems.

Antenna Autocalibration and Metrology Approach for the AFR/JPL Space-Based Radar
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are collaborating in the technology development for a space based radar (SBR) system that would feature a large aperture lightweight antenna for a joint mission later in this decade.
