Pressure-Induced Superconductivity In Polycrystalline La 3 Ni 2 O 7 − δ

We synthesized polycrystalline La 3 Ni 2 O 7 − δ ( δ ≈ 0.0 7 ) samples by using the sol-gel method without postannealing under high oxygen pressure, and then measured temperature-dependent resistivity under various hydrostatic pressures up to 18 GPa by using the cubic anvil and two-stage multianvil apparatus. We find that the density-wave-like anomaly in resistivity is progressively suppressed with increasing pressure and the resistivity drop corresponding to the onset of superconductivity emerges at pressure as low as ∼ 6 GPa . Zero resistivity is achieved at 9 GPa below T c zero ≈ 6.6 K , which increases quickly with pressure to 41 K at 18 GPa. However, the diamagnetic response was not detected in the ac magnetic susceptibility measurements up to 15 GPa, indicating a filamentary nature of the observed superconductivity in the studied pressure range. The constructed T − P phase diagram reveals an intimate relationship between superconductivity, density-wave-like order, and the strange-metal-like behaviors. The observation of zero-resistance state in the polycrystalline La 3 Ni 2 O 7 − δ samples under high pressures not only corroborates the recent report of superconductivity in the pressurized La 3 Ni 2 O 7 crystals but also facilitates further studies on this emerging family of nickelate high- T c superconductors. Dipolar Spin Ice Regime Proximate to an All-In-All-Out Néel Ground State in the Dipolar-Octupolar Pyrochlore Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7

The dipolar-octupolar (DO) pyrochlores, R 2 M 2 O 7 ( R = Ce , Sm , Nd ), are key players in the search for realizable novel quantum spin liquid (QSL) states as a large parameter space within the DO pyrochlore phase diagram is theorized to host QSL states of both dipolar and octupolar nature. New single crystals and powders of Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 , synthesized by hydrothermal techniques, present an opportunity for a new characterization of the exchange parameters in Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 using the near-neighbor X Y Z model Hamiltonian associated with DO pyrochlores. Utilizing quantum numerical linked cluster expansion fits to heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, and classical Monte Carlo calculations to the diffuse neutron diffraction of the new hydrothermally grown Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 samples, we place Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 ’s ground state within the ordered dipolar all-in-all-out (AIAO) Néel phase, with quantum Monte Carlo calculations showing a transition to long-range order at temperatures below those accessed experimentally. Indeed, our new neutron diffraction measurements on the hydrothermally grown Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 powders show a broad signal at low scattering wave vectors, reminiscent of a spin ice, in striking contrast from previous powder neutron diffraction on samples grown from solid-state synthesis, which found diffuse scattering at high scattering wave vectors associated with magnetic and suggested an octupolar quantum spin ice state. We conclude that new hydrothermally grown Ce 2 Sn 2 O 7 samples host a finite-temperature proximate dipolar spin ice phase, above the expected transition to AIAO Néel order. Dynamical ground state in the XY pyrochlore Yb2GaSbO7

Abstract The magnetic ground state of the pyrochlore Yb 2 GaSbO 7 has not been established. The persistent spin fluctuations observed by muon spin-relaxation measurements at low temperatures have not been adequately explained for this material using existing theories for quantum magnetism. Here we report on the synthesis and characterisation of Yb 2 GaSbO 7 to revisit the nature of the magnetic ground state. Through DC and AC magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering experiments, we observe evidence for a dynamical ground state that makes Yb 2 GaSbO 7 a promising candidate for disorder-induced spin-liquid or spin-singlet behaviour. This state is quite fragile, being tuned to a splayed ferromagnet in a modest magnetic field μ 0 H c ~ 1.5 T.
