Refined room-temperature equation of state of Bi up to 260 GPa

At room temperature, bismuth undergoes several structural transitions with increasing pressure before taking on a body-centered cubic (bcc) phase at approximately 8 GPa. The bcc structure is stable to the highest measured pressure and its simplicity, along with its high compressibility and atomic number, makes it an enticing choice as a pressure calibrant. Here, we present three data sets on the compression of bismuth in a diamond anvil cell in a neon pressure medium, up to a maximum pressure of about 260 GPa. The use of a soft pressure medium reduces deviatoric stress when compared to previous work. With an expanded pressure range, a higher point density, and a decreased uniaxial stress component, we are able to provide more reliable equation of state parameters. We also conduct density functional theory electronic-structure calculations that confirm that the bcc phase is energetically favored at high pressure.

Absence of precursor incommensurate charge order in electronic nematic Ba 0.35 Sr 0.65 Ni 2 As 2

Recent discoveries of charge order and electronic nematic order in the iron-based superconductors and cuprates have pointed towards the possibility of nematic and charge fluctuations playing a role in the enhancement of superconductivity. The Ba 1–x Sr x Ni 2 As 2 system, closely related in structure to the BaFe 2 As 2 system, has recently been shown to exhibit both types of ordering without the presence of any magnetic order. We report single-crystal x-ray diffraction experiments on Ba 0.35 Sr 0.65 Ni 2 As 2 , providing evidence that the previously reported incommensurate charge order with wave-vector (0, 0.28, 0) tet in the tetragonal state of BaNi 2 As 2 vanishes by 65% Sr substitution together with nematic order. Furthermore, our measurements suggest that the nematic and incommensurate charge orders are closely tied in the tetragonal state and show that the (0, 0.33, 0) tri charge ordering in the triclinic phase of BaNi 2 As 2 evolves to become (0, 0.5, 0) tri charge ordering at x = 0.65 before vanishing at x = 0.71.

Charge density wave activated excitons in TiSe 2 –MoSe 2 heterostructures

Layered materials enable the assembly of a new class of heterostructures where lattice-matching is no longer a requirement. Interfaces in these heterostructures therefore become a fertile ground for unexplored physics as dissimilar phenomena can be coupled via proximity effects. In this article, we identify an unexpected photoluminescence (PL) peak when MoSe 2 interacts with TiSe 2 . A series of temperature-dependent and spatially resolved PL measurements reveal that this peak is unique to the TiSe 2 –MoSe 2 interface, is higher in energy compared to the neutral exciton, and exhibits exciton-like characteristics. The feature disappears at the TiSe 2 charge density wave transition, suggesting that the density wave plays an important role in the formation of this new exciton. We present several plausible scenarios regarding the origin of this peak that individually capture some aspects of our observations but cannot fully explain this feature. These results therefore represent a fresh challenge for the theoretical community and provide a fascinating way to engineer excitons through interactions with charge density waves.

Pressure-driven valence increase and metallization in the Kondo insulator Ce 3 Bi 4 Pt 3

We report the results of high-pressure x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption, and electrical transport measurements of the Kondo insulator (KI) Ce 3 Bi 4 Pt 3 up to 42 GPa, the highest pressure reached in the study of any Ce-based KI. Here, we observe a smooth decrease in volume and movement toward intermediate Ce valence with pressure, both of which point to increased electron correlations. Despite this, temperature-dependent resistance data show the suppression of the interaction-driven ambient pressure insulating ground state. We also discuss potential ramifications of these results for the predicted topological KI state.
