Novel Rotated Virtual Synchronous Generator Control for Power-Sharing in Microgrids with Complex Line Impedance

Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control is based on the fact that the line impedance in a microgrid is highly inductive. This assumption was made due to the emulation of the stator winding of an electrical machine. This concept can affect the controllability of a microgrid with complex line impedance, generating deviations in the chosen operation point. To overcome this issue, additional techniques must be implemented. This paper describes a novel mathematical approach that uses the power line characteristics in a microgrid to rotate the power control reference frame and proposes a new control method called a “Rotated Virtual Synchronous Generator” (RVSG). This RVSG control approach integrates the effect of complex impedance on the microgrid’s operation and adjusts the reference frame accordingly to improve the system’s stability and performance. The use of this proposed mathematical approach in microgrids allows the further emulation of virtual inertia in microgrids that lack inertia. Finally, a comparison between RVSG control and the classical virtual synchronous generator method is carried out to show that it allows the improvement of the transient power response, power quality, stability, and performance, mainly in microgrids with complex line impedance.

Modeling, Load Profile Validation, and Assessment of Solar-Rooftop Energy Potential for Low-and-Moderate-Income Communities in the Caribbean

This document presents the modeling of load profile consumption for Low-and-Moderate-Income (LMI) communities in the Caribbean Islands, as well as an assessment of the solar-rooftop energy potential. In this work, real data, together with synthetic and electricity bill data, were collected to validate and improve the load profile models. The solar-rooftop energy potential was obtained through a National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) software called the PVWatts calculator, and mathematical analysis. The analysis of rooftop solar energy potential was conducted to enable the minimum size of solar power systems to fit the energy demand in the community. The results obtained allow estimation of the capacity of the energy system for each house or an entire community.

Parametric Comparative Analysis between Virtual Synchronous Generator and Droop-based Inertia for Inverter-Based Microgrids

This paper presents a parametric comparative analysis between the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) method and the droop control method to emulate inertia in the voltage-source inverter (VSI). Droop controllers are commonly used to regulate sharing power in microgrids and distribute power generation proportionally among VSI’s depending on their rated power. Additionally, VSG has been used to regulate the Rate-of-Change-of-Frequency (RoCoF) of the microgrid using virtual inertia. Although both methods can be used to regulate the frequency variation, the influence of each method on the closed loop eigenvalues is not the same. In this work, the transient response of the frequency is analyzed for each method to determine their advantages and disadvantages regarding frequency regulation in microgrid applications. The results were verified by conducting experimental trials using VSI’s. These experiments demonstrated that VSG is more suitable for regulating RoCoF and frequency nadir than droop controllers since it provides inertial support and improves frequency response.
