Characteristics of a semi-custom library development system

Standard cell and gate array macro libraries are in common use with workstation computer aided design (CAD) tools for application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) semi-custom application and have resulted in significant improvements in the overall design efficiencies as contrasted with custom design methodologies. Similar design methodology enhancements in providing for the efficient development of the library cells is an important factor in responding to the need for continuous technology improvement. The characteristics of a library development system that provides design flexibility and productivity enhancements for the library development engineer as he provides libraries in the state-of-the-art process technologies are presented. An overview of Gould's library development system ('Accolade') is also presented.

Robotics for the United States Space Station

Advances in robotics technology that will be necessary for the NASA Space Station to achieve its optimal level of automation are examined. The present state and emerging trends in teleoperator systems, hybrid teleoperated robots, and autonomous robots are reviewed, and scenarios of assembly, inspection, satellite servicing, and manufacturing are presented in order to illustrate potential uses of automation and robotics on the Space Station. Individual important technology development areas for Space Station robotics are surveyed, including end effectors and mechanization, control systems, telepresence and human factors, preception, manipulation in space, operation planning and data bases, and hardware maintenance.

Control of a flexible robot arm

Exact equations of motion of an arm with known parameters were developed and analyzed preparatory to designing control systems for robotic manipulators. The design of an experimental one-link arm for testing control designs is presented.

Computation of spacecraft signal raypath trajectories relative to the sun

A computer program (CTS 41B) used to determine the trajectory of a spacecraft signal raypath was updated to increase its usefulness during solar conjunctions (CTS 41C). The closest point of approach of the raypath to the sun is projected onto the surface and the solar latitude and longitude calculated. A sample computation and plots are given for the 1976 Viking solar conjunction. Eventually it may be possible to predict the communication link performance degradation in the near sun region due to solar activity.
