Large off-diagonal magnetoelectricity in a triangular Co2+-based collinear antiferromagnet

Abstract Magnetic toroidicity is an uncommon type of magnetic structure in solid-state materials. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that collinear spins in a material with R -3 lattice symmetry can host a significant magnetic toroidicity, even parallel to the ordered spins. Taking advantage of a single crystal sample of CoTe 6 O 13 with an R -3 space group and a Co 2+ triangular sublattice, temperature-dependent magnetic, thermodynamic, and neutron diffraction results reveal A-type antiferromagnetic order below 19.5 K, with magnetic point group -3′ and k = (0,0,0). Our symmetry analysis suggests that the missing mirror symmetry in the lattice could lead to the local spin canting for a toroidal moment along the c axis. Experimentally, we observe a large off-diagonal magnetoelectric coefficient of 41.2 ps/m that evidences the magnetic toroidicity. In addition, the paramagnetic state exhibits a large effective moment per Co 2+ , indicating that the magnetic moment in CoTe 6 O 13 has a significant orbital contribution. CoTe 6 O 13 embodies an excellent opportunity for the study of next-generation functional magnetoelectric materials.

Field-induced partial disorder in a Shastry-Sutherland lattice

Abstract A 2-Q antiferromagnetic order of the ferromagnetic dimers was found below T N = 2.9 K in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice BaNd 2 ZnS 5 by single crystal neutron diffraction. The magnetic order can be understood by the orthogonal arrangement of local Ising Nd spins, identified by polarized neutrons. A field was applied along [1 -1 0] to probe the observed metamagnetic transition in the magnetization measurement. The field decouples two magnetic sublattices corresponding to the propagation vectors q 1 = (½, ½, 0) and q 2 = (−½, ½, 0), respectively. Each sublattice shows a “stripe” order with a Néel-type arrangement in each single layer. The “stripe” order with q 1 remains nearly intact up to 6 T, while the other one with q 2 is suppressed at a critical field H c ~1.7 T, indicating a partial disorder. The H c varies with temperature and is manifested in the H - T phase diagram constructed by measuring the magnetization in BaNd 2 ZnS 5 .

Field-tunable toroidal moment in a chiral-lattice magnet

Abstract Ferrotoroidal order, which represents a spontaneous arrangement of toroidal moments, has recently been found in a few linear magnetoelectric materials. However, tuning toroidal moments in these materials is challenging. Here, we report switching between ferritoroidal and ferrotoroidal phases by a small magnetic field, in a chiral triangular-lattice magnet BaCoSiO 4 with tri-spin vortices. Upon applying a magnetic field, we observe multi-stair metamagnetic transitions, characterized by equidistant steps in the net magnetic and toroidal moments. This highly unusual ferri-ferroic order appears to come as a result of an unusual hierarchy of frustrated isotropic exchange couplings revealed by first principle calculations, and the antisymmetric exchange interactions driven by the structural chirality. In contrast to the previously known toroidal materials identified via a linear magnetoelectric effect, BaCoSiO 4 is a qualitatively new multiferroic with an unusual coupling between several different orders, and opens up new avenues for realizing easily tunable toroidal orders.

Vacancy defect control of colossal thermopower in FeSb2

Abstract Iron diantimonide is a material with the highest known thermoelectric power. By combining scanning transmission electron microscopic study with electronic transport neutron, X-ray scattering, and first principle calculation, we identify atomic defects that control colossal thermopower magnitude and nanoprecipitate clusters with Sb vacancy ordering, which induce additional phonon scattering and substantially reduce thermal conductivity. Defects are found to cause rather weak but important monoclinic distortion of the unit cell P n n m → P m . The absence of Sb along [010] for high defect concentration forms conducting path due to Fe d orbital overlap. The connection between atomic defect anisotropy and colossal thermopower in FeSb 2 paves the way for the understanding and tailoring of giant thermopower in related materials.
