Hadronization of heavy quarks

Heavy-flavor hadrons produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions are a sensitive probe for studying hadronization mechanisms of the quark-gluon-plasma. In this paper, we survey how different transport models for the simulation of heavy-quark diffusion through a quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions implement hadronization and how this affects final state observables. Utilizing the same input charm-quark distribution in all models at the hadronization transition, we find that the transverse-momentum dependence of the nuclear modification factor of various charm hadron species has significant sensitivity to the hadronization scheme. In addition, the charm-hadron elliptic flow exhibits a nontrivial dependence on the elliptic flow of the hadronizing partonic medium.

Linear Boltzmann transport for jet propagation in the quark-gluon plasma: Inelastic processes and jet modification

A linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) Monte Carlo model has been developed to describe jet propagation and interaction with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. A complete set of elastic-scattering processes and medium-induced gluon emissions based on the higher-twist formalism are incorporated for both jet shower and medium recoil partons. It has been employed to describe experimental data on large transverse momentum hadron and jet spectra, correlation and jet substructures in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Here, we document in detail the structure of the model and validation of the Monte Carlo implementations of the physics processes in LBT, in particular, the inelastic process of medium-induced gluon radiation. We carry out a comprehensive examination of the jet-medium interaction as implemented in LBT through energy loss and momentum broadening of a single hard parton, the energy and transverse momentum transfer from leading partons to medium-induced gluons and jet-induced medium excitation, and medium modification of reconstructed jets in a static and uniform medium. With realistic and event-by-event hydrodynamic medium in heavy-ion collisions, we compute and compare with experimental data on the jet cone-size dependence of the single inclusive jet suppression at both the BNL Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the dijet asymmetry at the LHC and γ-jet correlation at RHIC. Effects of medium-induced gluon emissions and jet-induced medium excitation on jet observables are systematically examined. Rescatterings of the radiated gluons and recoil partons with the QGP are found essential to account for the enhancement of soft particle yield toward the edge of the jet cone.

QLBT: a linear Boltzmann transport model for heavy quarks in a quark-gluon plasma of quasi-particles

Abstract We develop a new heavy quark transport model, QLBT, to simulate the dynamical propagation of heavy quarks inside the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our QLBT model is based on the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model with the ideal QGP replaced by a collection of quasi-particles to account for the non-perturbative interactions among quarks and gluons of the hot QGP. The thermal masses of quasi-particles are fitted to the equation of state from lattice QCD simulations using the Bayesian statistical analysis method. Combining QLBT with our advanced hybrid fragmentation-coalescence hadronization approach, we calculate the nuclear modification factor $$R_\mathrm {AA}$$ R AA and the elliptic flow $$v_2$$ v 2 of D mesons at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. By comparing our QLBT calculation to the experimental data on the D meson $$R_\mathrm {AA}$$ R AA and $$v_2$$ v 2 , we extract the heavy quark transport parameter $$\hat{q}$$ q ^ and diffusion coefficient $$D_\mathrm {s}$$ D s in the temperature range of $$1-4~T_\mathrm {c}$$ 1 - 4 T c , and compare them with the lattice QCD results and other phenomenological studies.

Heavy and light flavor jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions in a perturbative QCD approach

In this work, we study the flavor dependence of jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions. A next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD framework is applied to account for both quark and gluon contributions to light and heavy flavor hadron productions. A linear Boltzmann transport model coupled to hydrodynamic simulation is utilized to study the nuclear modification of heavy and light flavor jets in the dynamically evolving quark-gluon plasma. Within our jet quenching framework, we obtain a nice description of the nuclear modification factors of charged hadrons, D mesons, B mesons and B–decayed D mesons over a wide range of transverse momentum (8-300 GeV). Our result shows that perturbative QCD is sufficient to explain the color, mass and energy dependence of parton energy loss and jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions.

Jet quenching and medium response in high-energy heavy-ion collisions: a review

Jet quenching has been used successfully as a hard probe to study properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at both the relativistic heavy-ion collider and the large hadron collider. Furthermore, we will review recent progresses in theoretical and phenomenological studies of jet quenching with jet transport models. Special emphasis is given to effects of jet-induced medium response on a wide variety of experimental observables and their implications on extracting transport properties of the QGP in heavy-ion collisions.

QCD critical point from the Nambu–Jona-Lasino model with a scalar-vector interaction

We study the critical point in the QCD phase diagram in the Nambu–Jona-Lasino (NJL) model by including a scalar-vector coupled interaction. We find that varying the strength of this interaction, which has no effect on the vacuum properties of QCD, can significantly affect the location of the critical point in the QCD phase diagram, particularly the value of the critical temperature. This provides a convenient way to use the NJL-based transport or hydrodynamic model to extract information about the QCD phase diagram from relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Longitudinal dependence of B and D meson nuclear modifications in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC

It is widely acknowledged that heavy flavor probes are sensitive to the properties of the quark-gluon plasma and are often considered an important tool for the plasma tomography studies. Forward rapidity observables can provide further insight on the dynamics of the medium due to the interplay between the medium size and the differences in the production spectra of heavy quark probes. In this proceedings we present the nuclear modification factor R AA 's for B and D mesons, as well as heavy flavor leptons, in the rapidity range -4.0 < y < 4.0 obtained from relativistic Langevin equation with gluon radiation coupled with a (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics medium background. Finally, we present comparison with experimental data at mid-rapidity as well as predictions for different rapidity ranges.

The effect of jet-induced medium excitation on Λ/ k 0 s in jet in Pb-Pb collisions

In this work, we use CoLBT-hydro model for simultaneous event-by-event simulations of jet propagation and hydrodynamics evolution of the bulk medium including jet-induced medium excitation. The final reconstructed jet in heavy-ion collision include not only hadrons from medium response for the deposited energy and momentum of hard partons, but also hadrons from the fragmentation and recombination process of in-medium hard partons. We carry out the study with CoLBT-hydro of medium modification of the Λ/ k 0 s in jet in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=2.76TeV. We qualitatively describe the enhancement of the Λ/ k 0 s ratio in jet in the intermediate pT region due to the contribution from jet-induced medium flow.

Heavy quark transport: a theoretical overview

A brief overview on heavy-quark-QGP interactions is presented in this work. Theories at different momentum scales are summarized, including the flavor hierarchy of jet energy loss at high pT, hadronization and the charmed hadron chemistry at medium to low pT, and the extraction of the heavy-quark-QGP potential at low pT. Additionally, recent theoretical developments on heavy quark theories are discussed, such as multi-scale transport models of heavy quarks, probing initial state effects and cold nuclear matter effects using heavy quarks, as well as extending studies from single heavy flavor hadrons to heavy flavor jets.

Heavy flavor quenching and flow: the roles of initial condition, pre-equilibrium evolution, and in-medium interaction

Within an advanced Langevin-hydrodynamics framework coupled to a hybrid fragmentation-coalescence hadronization model, we study heavy flavor quenching and flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We investigate how the initial heavy quark spectrum, the in-medium energy loss and hadronization mechanisms of heavy quarks, the evolution profile of the pre-equilibrium stage, the medium flow, and the temperature dependence of heavy quark diffusion coefficients influence the suppression and elliptic flow of heavy mesons at the RHIC and the LHC. Our results show that the different modeling of initial conditions, pre-equilibrium evolution, and in-medium interactions can individually yield uncertainties of approximately 10-40% in D meson suppression and flow at a low transverse momentum. Furthermore, we also find that proper combinations of collisional versus radiative energy loss, coalescence versus fragmentation in hadronization, and the inclusion of medium flow are the most important factors for describing the suppression and elliptic flow of heavy mesons.

Nuclear modification of leading hadrons and jets within a virtuality ordered parton shower

In this work, the event generator based on the higher-twist energy loss formalism—Modular All Twist Transverse-scattering Elastic-drag and Radiation (M ATTER )—is further developed and coupled to a hydrodynamic model for studying jet modification in relativistic nuclear collisions. The probability of parton splitting is calculated using the Sudakov form factor that is constructed by a combination of vacuum and medium-induced splitting functions; and the full parton showers are simulated, including both energy-momentum and space-time evolutions of all jet partons. With the assumption that partons below a virtual scale of 1 GeV is absorbed by the medium, this framework is able to provide a reasonable description of the nuclear modification of both leading hadrons and jets at high transverse momentum at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the CERN Large Hadron Collider.
