Ultra-hard carbon film from epitaxial two-layer graphene

An ultra-hard carbon film is formed by the uniaxial compression of thin films of graphene. The graphene films are two or three layers thick (2-L or 3-L). High pressure compression forms a diamond-like film and provides improved properties to the coated substrates.

CO 2 coverage on Pd catalysts accelerates oxygen removal in oxy-combustion systems

Oxy-combustion systems result in enriched CO 2 in exhaust gases; however, the utilization of the concentrated CO 2 stream from oxy-combustion is limited by remnant O 2 . CH 4 oxidation using Pd catalysts has been found to have high O 2 -removal efficiency. Here, in this study, the effect of excess CO 2 in the feed stream on O 2 removal with CH 4 oxidation is investigated by combining experimental and theoretical approaches. Experimental results reveal complete CH 4 oxidation without any side-products, and a monotonic increase in the rate of CO 2 generation with an increase in CO 2 concentration in the feed stream. Density-functional theory calculations show that high surface coverage of CO 2 on Pd leads to a reduction in the activation energy for the initial dissociation of CH 4 into CH 3 and H, and also the subsequent oxidation reactions. A CO 2 -rich environment in oxy-combustion systems is therefore beneficial for the reduction of oxygen in exhaust gases.

Sustainable Oxide Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen- and Oxygen-Evolution Reactions

In this work, an electrocatalyst for water splitting based on earth-abundant metals is reported. This perovskite-oxide catalyst, CaSrFe 0.75 Co 0.75 Mn 0.5 O 6-δ (CSFCM), is examined using both experimental and computational methods. It demonstrates a combination of properties, which include (a) very high activity for the oxygen-evolution reaction with an overpotential of eta = 0.19 V at 10 mA/cm 2 , (b) high stability over 1000 cycles of catalysis, (c) the ability to catalyze the hydrogen-evolution reaction effectively in both acidic and basic conditions, and (d) catalytic activity as a single-phase bulk material without the need for any additional processing, multicomponent composite preparation, or nanofabrication. Therefore, the catalytic activity of CSFCM is intrinsic, making it a good benchmark compound for future studies of electrocatalytic parameters. This work also highlights the impact of systematic structural design on electrocatalytic activity. Results from density functional theory calculations indicate that in addition to an optimal e g occupancy of similar to 1, an additional descriptor, i.e., maximizing the number of free e g carriers, correlates with the electrocatalytic activity.

Spatial defects nanoengineering for bipolar conductivity in MoS 2

Understanding the atomistic origin of defects in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, their impact on the electronic properties, and how to control them is critical for future electronics and optoelectronics. Here, we demonstrate the integration of thermochemical scanning probe lithography (tc-SPL) with a flow-through reactive gas cell to achieve nanoscale control of defects in monolayer MoS 2 . The tc-SPL produced defects can present either p- or n-type doping on demand, depending on the used gasses, allowing the realization of field effect transistors, and p-n junctions with precise sub-μm spatial control, and a rectification ratio of over 10 4 . Doping and defects formation are elucidated by means of X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and density functional theory. We find that p-type doping in HCl/H 2 O atmosphere is related to the rearrangement of sulfur atoms, and the formation of protruding covalent S-S bonds on the surface. Alternatively, local heating MoS 2 in N 2 produces n-character.
