Fast Catalysis at Low Overpotential: Designing Efficient Dicationic Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 I Electrocatalysts for CO 2 Reduction

Here we report a series of isomeric, dicationic Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 I com-plexes with bpy (2,2'-bipyridine) modified by two phenyl-CH 2 -(NMe 3 )+ pendants with cations located at variable distances from the active site for electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction in CH 3 CN/2.8 M H 2 O. The position of the cationic groups dramatically increases the rate of catalysis by 800-fold, from 1.2 to 950 s -1 , with a minor increase in overpotential. Acceleration is due to stabilization of the initial CO 2 adduct and lowering of ΔG ‡ for C-OH bond cleavage by Coulombic stabilization of anionic charges. Performance may be enhanced by accumulation in the electrochemical double layer. Transition state stabilization in the optimized isomer unlocks the low overpotential "protonation-first" pathway, highlighting the sizable effects of subtle structural optimization.

A Dicationic fac -Re(bpy)(CO) 3 Cl for CO 2 Electroreduction at a Reduced Overpotential

Here, a dicationic Re bipyridine-type complex, fac-Re(6,6'-(2-((trimethylammonio)-methyl)phenyl)-2,2'-bipyridine)(CO) 3 Cl hexafluorophosphate (1 2+ ), has been synthesized and its electrochemical behavior under Ar and CO 2 has been investigated. The presence of pendent tetra-alkylammonium cations induces an anodic shift in the electrocatalytic potential for CO 2 reduction relative to structurally similar model complexes. The electrochemical mechanisms in anhydrous CH 3 CN and in the presence of weak acids (water or trifluoroethanol) have been analyzed using cyclic voltammetry assisted by infrared spectroelectrochemistry and theoretical calculations. The dication enables catalysis at a diminished potential through coulombic stabilization of the doubly reduced pentacoordinate species, its CO 2 adduct, the hydroxide anion, and the conjugate base formed during acid-assisted C-OH bond cleavage of the metallocarboxylic acid to the metallocarbonyl and H 2 O. The major reduction product is CO, but in the presence of trifluoroethanol, formate is also produced with 14% Faradaic efficiency.

In Situ Attenuated Total Reflectance Infrared Spectroelectrochemistry (ATR-IR-SEC) for the Characterization of Molecular Redox Processes on Surface-Proximal Doped Silicon ATR Crystal Working Electrodes

In situ mid-infrared spectroscopy is a powerful technique for understanding the mechanism of CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) catalysts because it enables the direct detection of catalytic intermediates and products. Moreover, spectroelectrochemistry (SEC), the coupling of spectroscopy with electrochemistry, allows spectroscopic changes to be correlated with applied potentials to reveal potential-dependent intermediates that are often relevant to photoelectrochemical reactions. Hybrid photoelectrodes, comprised of a narrow bandgap semiconductor, like silicon (Si), with a covalently-linked molecular catalyst, are a promising platform for sunlight-driven catalysis, but characterization of the catalytic mechanism(s) is challenging under photoelectrochemical conditions, particularly when the catalyst is present in monolayer or less concentrations. Here, we have developed a new strategy to use multiple-reflection attenuated total reflectance IR spectroscopy (ATR-IR) coupled with electrochemistry to characterize catalysts directly integrated with a semiconductor surface under applied potential. We show that by surface-proximal n-type or p-type doping of the top ~100-200 nm of the crystal surface, Si ATR crystals can be used simultaneously as the internal reflection element and semiconductor working electrode for ATR-IR-SEC measurements. The surface-proximal doping strategy yields a quasi-equipotential surface with excellent infrared transparency that would have been compromised by free carrier absorption if the crystal was uniformly doped. This approach permits the catalytically-active functionalized surface to be directly probed without modification and overcomes signal-to-noise limitations of other strategies that use separately deposited working electrodes on Si ATR crystals. Proof-of-concept ATR-IR-SEC spectra were collected during the reduction and oxidation of monolayers of Re- and Ru-based transition metal carbonyl complexes, respectively, verifying the viability of the technique to probe redox processes associated with CO 2 R catalysts on Si electrode surfaces with high sensitivity.

Structural Insights into the Vapochromic Behavior of Pt- and Pd-Based Compounds

Anionic complexes having vapochromic behavior are investigated: [K(H 2 O)][M(ppy)(CN) 2 ], [K(H 2 O)][M(bzq)(CN) 2 ], and [Li(H 2 O) n ][Pt(bzq)(CN) 2 ], where ppy = 2-phenylpyridinate, bzq = 7,8-benzoquinolate, and M = Pt(II) or Pd(II). These hydrated potassium/lithium salts exhibit a change in color upon being heated to 380 K, and they transform back into the original color upon absorption of water molecules from the environment. The challenging characterization of their structure in the vapochromic transition has been carried out by combining several experimental techniques, despite the availability of partially ordered and/or impure crystalline material. Room-temperature single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction investigation revealed that [K(H 2 O)][Pt(ppy)(CN) 2 ] crystallizes in the Pbca space group and is isostructural to [K(H 2 O)][Pd(ppy)(CN) 2 ]. Variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction allowed the color transition to be related to changes in the diffraction pattern and the decrease in sample crystallinity. Water loss, monitored by thermogravimetric analysis, occurs in two stages, well separated for potassium Pt compounds and strongly overlapped for potassium Pd compounds. Furthermore, the local structure of potassium compounds was monitored by in situ pair distribution function (PDF) measurements, which highlighted changes in the intermolecular distances due to a rearrangement of the crystal packing upon vapochromic transition.
