Domain wall dynamics in tungsten trioxide: Evidence for polar domain walls

Domain walls have distinct properties from the bulk, and tailoring them to suit the needs for device applications is critical. Tungsten trioxide, WO 3 , is of great interest for device applications that make use of domain wall properties; it exhibits a phenomenologically rich sequence of phase transitions, virtually all of which are ferroelastic in character, resulting in many sets of domain walls at low temperatures, each with their own unique properties. Domain wall motion and its contribution to the piezoelectric response have been investigated in WO 3 from 300 to 180 K using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) and resonant piezoelectric spectroscopy (RPS), which showed that the P 2 1 / n , P 1 ¯ , and P 2 1 / c phases give a piezoelectric response despite the bulk being nominally centrosymmetric. Second harmonic generation (SHG) confirmed that polarity was strongest within the domain walls, and additional weak signals were found in the domains. Domain wall mobility was investigated in the P b c n , P 2 1 / n , and P 2 1 / c phases from 685 to 5 K. Domain walls in the P 2 1 / n and P 1 ¯ were more mobile than those in the P b c n and P 2 1 / c structures, and soon after the P 1 ¯ → P 2 1 / c transition the walls become pinned at ∼ 140 K . Thermoelastic properties of zircon: Implications for geothermobarometry

Abstract A thermal-pressure equation of state has been determined for zircon (ZrSiO4) that characterizes its thermoelastic behavior at metamorphic conditions. New pressure-volume (P-V) data from a “Mud Tank” zircon have been collected from 1 bar to 8.47(1) GPa using X-ray diffraction, and elastic moduli were measured from room temperature up to 1172 K by resonance ultrasound spectroscopy. These data were fitted simultaneously with temperature-volume (T-V) data from the literature in EosFit7c using a new scaling technique. The parameters of a third-order Birch-Murnaghan EoS with a Mie-Grüneisen-Debye model for thermal pressure have compressional EoS parameters K0T = 224.5(1.2) GPa, K0T' = 4.90(31) with a fixed initial molar volume V0 = 39.26 cm3/mol and thermal parameters γ0 = 0.868(15), q = 2.37(80), and ΘD = 848(38) K. EoS parameters that describe the variation of unit-cell parameters with pressure and temperature were determined using an isothermal-type EoS. This new EoS confirms that zircons are stiffer than garnets and exhibit a much lower thermal expansion. This results in steep isomekes between zircon and garnets, which makes zircon trapped as inclusions in garnets at metamorphic conditions a good piezothermometer.

Thermal and Magnetic Field Switching in a Two-Step Hysteretic Mn III Spin Crossover Compound Coupled to Symmetry Breakings

In this work, a Mn III spin crossover complex with atypical two-step hysteretic thermal switching at 74 K and 84 K shows rich structural–magnetic interplay and magnetic-field-induced spin state switching below 14 T with an onset below 5 T. The spin states, structures, and the nature of the phase transitions are elucidated via X-ray and magnetization measurements. An unusual intermediate phase containing four individual sites, where 1\4 are in a pure low spin state, is observed. The splitting of equivalent sites in the high temperature phase into four inequivalent sites is due to a structural reorganization involving a primary and a secondary symmetry-breaking order parameter that induces a crystal system change from orthorhombic→monoclinic and a cell doubling. Further cooling leads to a reconstructive phase transition and a monoclinic low-temperature phase with two inequivalent low-spin sites. The coupling between the order parameters is identified in the framework of Landau theory.

Stress‐Induced Domain Wall Motion in a Ferroelastic Mn 3+ Spin Crossover Complex

Abstract Domain wall motion is detected for the first time during the transition to a ferroelastic and spin state ordered phase of a spin crossover complex. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) revealed two distinct symmetry‐breaking phase transitions in the mononuclear Mn 3+ compound [Mn(3,5‐diBr‐sal 2 (323))]BPh 4 , 1. The first at 250 K, involves the space group change Cc → Pc and is thermodynamically continuous, while the second, Pc → P 1 at 85 K, is discontinuous and related to spin crossover and spin state ordering. Stress‐induced domain wall mobility was interpreted on the basis of a steep increase in acoustic loss immediately below the the Pc ‐ P 1 transition
