High Performance Polymers

This report summarizes results from research on high performance polymers. The research areas proposed in this report include: 1) Effort to improve the synthesis and to understand and replicate the dielectric behavior of 6HC17-PEK; 2) Continue preparation and evaluation of flexible, low dielectric silicon- and fluorine- containing polymers with improved toughness; and 3) Synthesis and characterization of high performance polymers containing the spirodilactam moiety.

Low Dielectric Polymers

This report summarizes results obtained through our current research effort entitled 'Low Dielectric Polymers'. Results are reported in four areas: (1) Development of an alkyne containing a crosslinking agent for 12F-PEK and its analogues; (2) Preparation and evaluation of new silicon- and/or fluorine-containing polymers for low temperature applications; (3) Polymers derived from a new highly fluorinated monomer; and (4) Continued evaluation of the scale-up of the preparation of 6FC11- and 6FC17-PEKs.

Low Dielectric Polymers

This report summarizes results obtained from research funded through Research Cooperative Agreement No. NCC-1-01033-"Low Dielectric Polymers" (from 5/10/01 through 5/09/02). Results are reported in three of the proposed research areas (Tasks 1-3 in the original proposal): (1) Repeat and confirm the preparation and properties of the new alkyl-substituted PEK, 6HC17-PEK, (2) Prepare and evaluate polymers derived from a highly fluorinated monomer, and (3) Prepare and evaluate new silicon and/or fluorine-containing polymers expected to retain useful properties at low temperature.

Fluorinated Poly(Phenylene Ether Ketones)

Fluorinated poly(phenylene ether ketones) are colorless, transparent, low-dielectric-constant, highly thermally stable polymers. Particularly suitable for use as film and coating materials in electronic and thermal-control applications such as; passivant insulating coats and interlevel dielectrics in microelectronic circuits, or as protective transparent coats on solar cells or mirrors. Solubility and transparency of 12F-PEK along with its lower dielectric constant and other properties make it more useful as dielectric film and coating material in many applications.

Highly fluorinated polymers

The topics covered include the following: highly fluorinated polyesters; N-alkylated polyamides; highly fluorinated polyethers; and silicon-containing fluoropolymers.

Trifluoromethyl-substituted polymers

The synthesis of polymers is discussed. It includes: (1) the synthesis of fluorine-containing crosslinked poly(ether ketones); (2) the synthesis and characterization of poly(imide amides) and their N-methylated analogues; (3) the synthesis of fluorine-containing aromatic polyethers; (4) the synthesis of novel fluorine-containing aromatic polysiloxanes; and (5) the conversion of 6F-containing polythioethers to polysulfones. It is hoped that these polymers will find use as low dielectric materials in electronic applications, function as thermal control coatings, or be suitable elastomeric sealants for extreme service conditions.

Low dielectric fluorinated poly(phenylene ether ketone) film and coating

The present invention relates to film and coating materials prepared from novel fluorinated poly(phenylene ether ketones). A fluorinated poly(phenylene ether ketone) is prepared by reacting a bisphenol with 1,1,1,3,3,3 hexafluoro-2,2-bis 4-(4-halobenzoyl) phenyl propane (wherein halo is fluoro or chloro), which is a novel monomer formed as the reaction product of halobenzene (wherein halo is fluoro or chloro) and 1,1,1,3,3,3 hexafluoro-2,2-bis (p-chloro formyl phenyl) propane. Especially beneficial results of this invention are that films and coating materials prepared from the novel fluorinated poly(phenylene ether ketone) are essentially optically transparent/colorless and have a lower dielectric constant than otherwise comparable, commercially available poly(phenylene ether ketones). Moreover, unlike the otherwise comparable commercially available materials, the novel fluorinated poly(phenylene ether ketones) of the present invention can be solution cast or sprayed to produce the films and coatings. Furthermore, the long term thermal stability of the polymers of the present invention is superior to that of the commercially available materials.

Copoly(imide-amides) containing hexafluoroisopropylidene

The incorporation of the hexafluoroisopropylidene (HFIP or 6F) group into polymer backbones brings about important and useful changes in properties. These differences include increased thermal and environmental resistance and solubility and decreased dielectric constant and color. Several types of backbones have been substrates for the inclusion of HFIP and all results have reflected impressive property benefits. This project involved the incorporation of 6F groups into a poly(imide-amide) backbone by the condensation of a 6F-containing dianhydride with 4-aminobenzoic acid to yield a diimide terminated with two carboxylic acid groups. This diacid trimer was then polymerized with various diamines. The polymers were obtained in yields of 86-94 percent and with viscosities of 0.90-2.26 dL/g. They were stable to above 500 C and clear, colorless films could be cast from DMAc.
