Use of Data to Improve Seasonal-to-Interannual Forecasts Simulated by Intermediate Coupled Models
This paper provides a detailed illustration that it can be much more beneficial for ENSO forecasting to use data to improve the model parameterizations rather than to modify the initial conditions to gain in consistency with the simulated coupled system.
ENSO Simulated by Intermediate Coupled Models and Evaluated with Observations Over 1970-1996. Part II: Sensitivity to the Eastward Penetration of the Equatorial Westerlies and to the Off-Equatorial O
Introducing new parameterizations of subsurface temperature and atmospheric convection in the Cane and Zebiak's model allows to reproduce oscillations with a period close to 4 years, equatorial wind anomalies that are located close to the dateline and realistic amplitudes of SST, wind and thermocline anomalies in the equatorial Pacific both in warm and cold phases.
ENSO Simulated with Intermediate Coupled Models and Evaluated with Observations Over 1970-1996. Part I: Role of the Off-Equatorial Variability
ENSO simulations are investigated in 30 year integrations of various Intermediate Coupled Models and compared with observed SST, wind and thermocline depth anomalies over the tropical Pacific.
