The BDX detector prototype for dark matter searches in a Beam Dump eXperiment at JLAB

The Beam Dump eXperiment (BDX) is an electron-beam thick-target experiment aimed to investigate the existence of light dark matter particles in the MeV-GeV mass range at Jefferson Lab. A small-scale prototype (BDX-Proto) of the BDX detector has been constructed in order to validate the proposed design and to demonstrate with real measurements the capability to efficiently reject the cosmogenic backgrounds. Here we report the peformance of BDX-Proto extracted from a long campaign of cosmic ray measurements performed at INFN, Sez. Catania and INFN, LNS.

The CLAS12 Trigger System

This article describes the CLAS12 Trigger System. The simulation, hardware, and software design, as well as all validation procedures, are discussed here. The firmware development tools used are discussed as well, including our experience with VIVADO High Level Synthesis.

The CLAS12 Forward Tagger

This document presents the technical layout and the performance of the CLAS12 Forward Tagger (FT). The FT, composed of an electromagnetic calorimeter based on PbWO$_4$ crystals (FT-Cal), a scintillation hodoscope (FT-Hodo), and several layers of Micromegas trackers (FT-Trk), has been designed to detect electrons and photons scattered at polar angles from 2$^\circ$ to 5$^\circ$ and to meet the physics goals of the hadron spectroscopy program and other experiments running with the CLAS12 spectrometer in Hall B.

Exclusive π 0 p electroproduction off protons in the resonance region at photon virtualities 0.4 GeV 2 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 1 GeV 2

The limited electroproduction process e p → e ' p ' π 0 was measured in the range of photon virtualities Q 2 = 0.4 – 1.0 GeV 2 and the invariant mass range of the p π 0 system of W = 1.1 – 1.8 GeV. These kinematics are covered in exclusive π 0 electroproduction off the proton with nearly complete angular coverage in the p π 0 center-of-mass system and with high statistical accuracy. Nearly 36 000 cross-section points were measured, and the structure functions σ T + ε σ L , σ L T , and σ T T , were extracted via fitting the φ π 0 dependence of the cross section. A Legendre polynomial expansion analysis demonstrates the sensitivity of our data to high-lying N * and Δ * resonances with M > 1.6 GeV. As part of a broad effort to determine the electrocouplings of the N * and Δ * resonances using both single- and double-pion electroproduction, this dataset is key for the reliable extraction of the high-lying resonance electrocouplings from the combined isospin analysis of the N π and π + π - p channels.

Application of Raman diagnostics to combustion

The use of laser Raman diagnostic techniques to measure the specie concentrations and their temperatures in combustion flow fields is discussed. The system designed to measure the specie concentrations, which included a ruby laser and a photodiode to trip the laser at the maximum light and heat output of the combustion process, is described and problems encountered in developing the system are reported. Photographs of the combustion process are presented and analyzed detailing the evolution of the combustion in terms of the photodiode and the lack of a noticeable Raman-Stokes signal. The absence of the Raman-Stokes signal is discussed.
