Oxygen vacancy dynamics in monoclinic metallic VO 2 domain structures

It was demonstrated recently that the nano-optical and nanoelectronic properties of VO 2 can be spatially programmed through the local injection of oxygen vacancies by atomic force microscope writing. In this work, we study the dynamic evolution of the patterned domain structures as a function of the oxygen vacancy concentration and the time. A threshold doping level is identified that is critical for both the metal–insulator transition and the defect stabilization. The diffusion of oxygen vacancies in the monoclinic phase is also characterized, which is directly responsible for the short lifetimes of sub-100 nm domain structures. This information is imperative for the development of oxide nanoelectronics through defect manipulations.

Engineering of Ferroic Orders in Thin Films by Anionic Substitution

Multiferroics are a unique class of materials where magnetic and ferroelectric orders coexist. The research on multiferroics contributes significantly to the fundamental understanding of the strong correlations between different material degrees of freedom and provides an energy-efficient route toward the electrical control of magnetism. While multiple ABO 3 oxide perovskites are identified as being multiferroic, their magnetoelectric coupling strength is often weak, necessitating the material search in different compounds. Here, the observation of room-temperature multiferroic orders in multi-anion SrNbO 3-x N x thin films is reported. In these samples, the multi-anion state enables the room-temperature ferromagnetic ordering of the Nb d-electrons. Simultaneously, ferroelectric responses that originate from the structural symmetry breaking associated are found with both the off-center displacements of Nb and the geometric displacements of Sr, depending on the relative O-N arrangements within the Nb-centered octahedra. So findings not only diversify the available multiferroic material pool but also demonstrate a new multiferroism design strategy via multi-anion engineering.

Develop On-Demand nanoplasmonic Device Concepts in a Semiconductor Compatible Hybrid System. Final Report

This report summarizes the research activities supported by the U.S. Department of Energy grant DE-SC-0010399. The goal of this project is to is to develop an on-demand nanoplasmonic platform that combines emerging oxide nanoelectronics with a low-loss semiconductor-friendly plasmonic materials. Toward this goal, several unique heterostructures formed between complex oxides and 2D layered materials have been developed. Based on these material systems, a set of atomic force microscope (AFM) based techniques have been developed that can allow long-living and reversible material phase transitions to be manipulated in nanoscale at room temperature. Using such technique and through interface coupling, we can effectively tune the plasmon propagations in unconventional plasmonic materials such as graphene and VO 2 . In addition, we also discovered a plethora of novel interface enabled electro-optic effects, including the spatial modulation of light using 2DEG, a giant programmable photothermoelectric effects at room temperature, a light induced superconducting transition, and a tunable giant third order optical nonlinearities. These major results are outlined in this report, along with lists of project participants and products.
