Neutral band gap of carbon by quantum Monte Carlo methods

We present a method of calculating the energy gap of a charge-neutral excitation using only ground-state calculations. We report Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of Γ→ Γ and Γ → X particle-hole excitation energies in diamond carbon. We analyze the finite-size effect and find the same 1/L decay rate as that in a charged excitation, where L is the linear extension of the supercell. This slow decay is attributed to the delocalized nature of the excitation in supercells too small to accommodate excitonic binding effects. At larger system sizes, the apparent 1/L decay crosses over to a 1/L 3 behavior. Estimation of the scale of exciton binding can be used to correct finite-size effects of neutral gaps.

Direct observation of the momentum distribution and renormalization factor in lithium

We have measured the momentum distribution and renormalization factor $Z_{k_F}$ in liquid and solid lithium by high-resolution Compton scattering. High-resolution data over a wide momentum range exhibit a clear feature of the renormalization and a sharp drop of momentum densities at the Fermi momentum $k_F$. In this work, these results are compared with those computed by quantum Monte Carlo simulation performed both on a disordered crystal and a liquid exhibiting very good agreement. Asymptotic behavior of the experimental and theoretical momentum distributions are examined to estimate $Z_{k_F}$. The experimentally obtained $Z_{k_F} = 0.43^{+0.11}_{–0.01}$ for liquid Li and $0.54^{+0.11}_{–0.02}$ for solid Li are in good agreement with theoretical results of 0.54 ± 0.01 and 0.64 ± 0.01, respectively.

Bose Condensation at He-4 Interfaces

Path Integral Monte Carlo was used to calculate the Bose-Einstein condensate fraction at the surface of a helium film at T = 0:77 K, as a function of density. Moving from the center of the slab to the surface, the condensate fraction was found to initially increase with decreasing density to a maximum value of 0.9, before decreasing. Long wavelength density correlations were observed in the static structure factor at the surface of the slab. A surface dispersion relation was calculated from imaginary-time density-density correlations. Similar calculations of the superfluid density throughout He-4 droplets doped with linear impurities (HCN)(sub n) are presented. After deriving a local estimator for the superfluid density distribution, we find a decreased superfluid response in the first solvation layer. This effective normal fluid exhibits temperature dependence similar to that of a two-dimensional helium system.

The He2 potential at small distances

Quantum Monte Carlo methods have been used to determine the exact Born-Oppenheimer interaction energy of two helium atoms with internuclear separations between 0.5 and 1.8 A. There is reasonable agreement with potentials derived from scattering data, however the semiempirical Aziz potential is too repulsive for separation less than 1.8 A. A new potential for this region is proposed.
