Splitting of C IV lines in a QSO absorption-line system

The C IV doublet in the z = 1.795 absorption-line system in the QSO B2 1225 + 317 has been observed with the Multiple Mirror Telescope echelle spectrograph at a resolution of 10 km/s. The profile of C IV, previously known to contain at least three velocity components, is shown to consist of at least eleven. Individual components have Doppler width upper limits of 6.4-13.2 km/s. These low upper limits, plus a study of published profile shapes for several other species, suggest that the observed gas is not in an equilibrium state of collisional ionization, and that electron temperatures are 35,000 K or lower. The width of the aggregate profile (approximately 500 km/s) is larger by a factor of 5 than any C IV or Si IV profile observed through the halo of the Galaxy, while individual components are narrower than those in the Galaxy. Thus, intervening galaxies with halos similar to that of the Galaxy, even if occurring in groups, may not explain this QSO absorption-line system.

The QSO 1156+295 - A multifrequency study of recent activity

Photometric observations are presented for outbursts of the quasi-stellar object QSO 1156+295 in 1981 and 1982. High time resolution photometry is included showing variations on time scales of weeks to about half an hour. Data from early plate material show that the object may have been quite bright at the beginning of this century but was quite faint and probably inactive between about 1950 and the beginning of recent activity in 1977-1979. Some results of optical linear polarization are discussed. In examining spectrophotometric results, broadband spectra show very little change in spectral shape during changes in continuum brightness. High resolution spectra (0.1-A FWHM) show no evidence for the Mg II 2798-A absorption sometimes seen in optically violent variables and other QSOs. The radio flux density variations at several frequencies are documented and discussed and compared with the optical light curve. Models for 1156+295 are discussed including variability time scales, and the observed energy output is compared with a magnetic accretion disk model proposed by Shields and Wheeler (1976). Results are summarized and the different sizes of active and inactive regions of the object are compared.

A survey of interstellar neutral potassium. I - Abundances and physical conditions in clouds toward 188 early-type stars

Observations of interstellar absorption in the resonance doublet 7664, 7698 A of neutral potassium toward 188 early-type stars at a spectral resolution of 8 km/s are reported. The 7664 A line is successfully separated from nearly coincident telluric O2 absorption for all but a few of the 165 stars for which K I absorption is detected, making possible an abundance analysis by the doublet ratio method. The relationships between the potassium abundances and other atomic abundances, the abundance of molecular hydrogen, and interstellar reddening are investigated.
