Fast pseudorandom quantum state generators via inflationary quantum gates

Abstract We propose a mechanism for reaching pseudorandom quantum states, computationally indistinguishable from Haar random, with shallow log-ndepth quantum circuits, wherenis the number of qudits. We argue that$$\log n$$ log n depth 2-qubit-gate-based generic random quantum circuits that are claimed to provide a lower bound on the speed of information scrambling, cannot produce computationally pseudorandom quantum states. This conclusion is connected with the presence of polynomial (inn) tails in the stay probability of short Pauli strings that survive evolution through such shallow circuits. We show, however, that stay-probability-tails can be eliminated and pseudorandom quantum states can be accomplished with shallow$$\log n$$ log n depth circuits built from a special universal family of “inflationary” quantum (IQ) gates. We prove that IQ-gates cannot be implemented with 2-qubit gates, but can be realized either as a subset of 2-qudit-gates inU(d 2 ) withd ≥ 3 anddprime, or as special 3-qubit gates.

Probing fractional statistics in quantum simulators of spin liquid Hamiltonians

Recent advances in programmable quantum devices brought to the fore the intriguing possibility of using them to realise and investigate topological quantum spin liquid phases. This new and exciting direction brings about important research questions on how to probe and determine the presence of such exotic, highly entangled phases in a noisy quantum environment. One of the most promising tools is investigating the behaviour of the topological excitations, and in particular their fractional statistics. In this work we put forward a generic route to achieve this, and we illustrate it in the specific case of \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 topological spin liquids implemented with the aid of combinatorial gauge symmetry. We design a convenient architecture to study signatures of fractional statistics via quasiparticle interferometry, and we assess its robustness to diagonal and off-diagonal disorder, as well as to dephasing - effects that are generally pervasive in current quantum programmable devices. Interestingly, when turned on its head, our scheme provides a remarkably clear test of the “quantumness” of these devices, with robust signatures that crucially hinge on quantum coherence and quantum interference effects, and cannot be mimicked by classical stochastic processes.

Constructing non-Abelian quantum spin liquids using combinatorial gauge symmetry

We construct Hamiltonians with only 1- and 2-body interactions that exhibit an exact non-Abelian gauge symmetry (specifically, combinatiorial gauge symmetry). Our spin Hamiltonian realizes the quantum double associated to the group of quaternions. It contains only ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic ZZ Z Z interactions, plus longitudinal and transverse fields, and therefore is an explicit example of a spin Hamiltonian with no sign problem that realizes a non-Abelian topological phase. In addition to the spin model, we propose a superconducting quantum circuit version with the same symmetry.

Single monkey-saddle singularity of a Fermi surface and its instabilities

Fermi surfaces can undergo sharp transitions under smooth changes of parameters. Such transitions can have a topological character, as is the case when a higher-order singularity, one that requires cubic or higher-order terms to describe the electronic dispersion near the singularity, develops at the transition. When time-reversal and inversion symmetries are present, odd singularities can only appear in pairs within the Brillouin zone. In this case, the combination of the enhanced density of states that accompanies these singularities and the nesting between the pairs of singularities leads to interaction-driven instabilities. Here, we present examples of single n = 3 (monkey-saddle) singularities when time-reversal and inversion symmetries are broken. We then turn to the question of what instabilities are possible when the singularities are isolated. For spinful electrons, we find that the inclusion of repulsive interactions destroys any isolated monkey-saddle singularity present in the noninteracting spectrum by developing Stoner or Lifshitz instabilities. In contrast, for spinless electrons and at the mean-field level, we show that an isolated monkey-saddle singularity can be stabilized in the presence of short-range repulsive interactions.

Network construction of non-Abelian chiral spin liquids

We use a network of chiral junctions to construct a family of topological chiral spin liquids in two spatial dimensions. The chiral spin liquid phase harbors SU(2) _k k anyons, which stem from the underlying SU(2) _k k WZW models that describe the constituent spin chains of the network. The network exhibits quantized spin and thermal Hall conductances. We illustrate our construction by inspecting the topological properties of the SU(2) _2 2 model. We find that this model has emergent Ising anyons, with spinons acting as vortex excitations that bind Majorana zero modes. We also show that the ground state of this network is threefold degenerate on the torus, asserting its non-Abelian character. Our results shed new light on the stability of non-Abelian topological phases in artificial quantum materials.

Logical Majorana zero modes in a nanowire network

We present a scheme to use physical Majorana quasizero modes at each junction of a two-dimensional nanowire network to build a logical Majorana zero mode, the location of which is controllable through gate voltages. The wire network is a way to realize a recent proposal to imprint a Kekulé vortex pattern on a honeycomb lattice via gate voltages. We show that a specific type of junction, other than a naive Y or T junction, is needed to realize, without breaking time-reversal symmetry, an artificial “graphene” system with Majorana fermions instead of complex ones at each site. The junction we propose (i) traps exactly one physical Majorana (quasi)zero mode at each site of either a brick wall or honeycomb lattice and (ii) allows this mode to hybridize with all three neighboring sites. Using a lattice of these junctions and starting from an electronic, tight-binding model for the wires, we imprint the voltage patterns corresponding to the Kekulé vortex and observe the emergence of the logical Majorana zero mode at the vortex core. By suitable adiabatic modulations of gate voltages as a function of time, the positions of individual Kekulé vortices can be moved, and in this manner, non-Abelian braiding of the logical Majoranas bound to the vortex cores can be performed. We provide the range of parameters where these excitations could be realized experimentally.

Effective fractonic behavior in a two-dimensional exactly solvable spin liquid

In this work we propose a \mathbb{Z}_N ℤ N clock model which is exactly solvable on the lattice. We find exotic properties for the low-energy physics, such as UV/IR mixing and excitations with restricted mobility, that resemble fractonic physics from higher dimensional models. We then study the continuum descriptions for the lattice system in two distinct regimes and find two qualitative distinct field theories for each one of them. A characteristic time scale that grows exponentially fast with N^2 N 2 (and diverges rapidly as function of system parameters) separates these two regimes. For times below this scale, the system is described by an effective fractonic Chern-Simons-like action, where higher-form symmetries prevent quasiparticles from hopping. In this regime, the system behaves effectively as a fracton as isolated particles, in practice, never leave their original position. Beyond the large characteristic time scale, the excitations are mobile and the effective field theory is given by a pure mutual Chern-Simons action. In this regime, the UV/IR properties of the system is captured by a peculiar realization of the translation group.
