Quasi-linear analysis of ion Weibel instability in the earth's neutral sheet

A quasi-linear analysis of the ion Weibel instability (IWI) for waves with parallel propagation is carried out for parameters appropriate to the earth's neutral sheet during the substorm interval. For ion drift speed reaching sizable fraction of the ion thermal speed, unstable waves grow to a nonlinear regime in a time interval greater than an ion gyroperiod. The saturation level is attained with current density reduced to about 15-28 percent of its preactivity level. The unstable wave amplitude normalized to the initial ambient field is found to be in the range of 0.2-0.8. This is accompanied by ion heating along the magnetic field with the parallel temperature being enhanced by 25-90 percent. Thus, the IWI can provide nonadiabatic heating of ions in current disruptions during substorms. The associated anomalous resistivity is estimated to be about 1 x 10 exp -7 to 1 x 10 exp -6 s, which is about 11 to 12 orders of magnitude above the classical resistivity.

Current collection and current closure in the Tethered Satellite System

Current collection and closure-path modeling are examined analytically with respect to the Tethered Satellite System (TSS). A particle-in cell code is compared with a one-dimensional unmagnetized fluid code to model the behavior of a positively charged satellite in the ionosphere. The morphology of the sheath and the sheath-region processes are thus examined, and the influence of ions leaving the sheath region is found to cause the attraction of an electron current that is 40 times greater than the steady state value. The enhancement is transient and enhances the acceleration of the electrons in the sheath. A set of modified MHD equations, including those for ion inertia, quasineutrality, and electron drift, is employed to model TSS current closure. Whistler modes are found to exist and can be excited as the TSS passes through the ionosphere. Important conclusions include a significant fluctuation level in the steady state sheath, an ion void which affects the electron population, and some long-lived electrons trapped in the settled sheath with respect to two directions.

High-voltage sheaths and charge neutralization in space power systems

The authors examine the electrodynamics of charged platforms in the ionosphere with a variety of analytical and numerical models. These models have been specifically designed to study the tethered satellite system (TSS-1) due to be launched in early 1992. One of the objectives of TSS-1 is to determine the potential of tethers for electrical power generation from orbital motion across the earth's magnetic field. The author identifies and explores important aspects of the interaction between the ambient ionospheric plasma and moving charged orbital platforms: (1) the formation of energetic particles in the wake of a nominally neutral satellite, (2) transient current collection by a highly charged platform, (3) the current closure paths in the ionosphere between multiple polarized platforms, and (4) the conditions for rapid neutralization by enhanced plasma formation in the presence of effluent gases.
