Reducing Operator Complexity of Galerkin Coarse-grid Operators with Machine Learning

Here, we propose a data-driven and machine-learning-based approach to compute non-Galerkin coarse-grid operators in multigrid (MG) methods, addressing the well-known issue of increasing operator complexity. Guided by the MG theory on spectrally equivalent coarse-grid operators, we have developed novel machine learning algorithms that utilize neural networks combined with smooth test vectors from multigrid eigenvalue problems. The proposed method demonstrates promise in reducing the complexity of coarse-grid operators while maintaining overall MG convergence for solving parametric partial differential equation problems. Numerical experiments on anisotropic rotated Laplacian and linear elasticity problems are provided to showcase the performance and comparison with existing methods for computing non-Galerkin coarse-grid operators.

A Cassegrain Offset-Fed Dual-Band Reflectarray

An X/Ka dual-band microstrip reflectarray with circular polarization (CP) has been constructed using thin membranes and Cassegrain offset-fed configuration. It is believed that this is the first Cassegrain reflectarray ever been developed. This antenna has a 75-cm-diameter aperture and uses metallic subreflector and angular-rotated annular ring elements. It achieved a measured -3dB-gain bandwidth of 700 MHz at X-band and 1.5 GHz at Ka-band, as well as a CP bandwidth (3dB axial ratio) of more than 700 MHz at X-band and more than 2 GHz at Ka-band. The measured peak efficiencies are 49.8% at X-band and 48.2% at Ka-band.

Ka-Band Beam Steering Reflectarray Study

A one-meter diameter, 32 GHz active microstrip reflectarray capable of electronic beam steering has been studied. The 15_500 element array consists of rnicrostrip patch antennas, microstrip phase shifters, and dc bias lines. Specifically, the study focused on the solid-state devices and dc bias layouts for scanning the beam linearly 45 from boresight using 2-bit phase shifters. Three configurations are recommended for the reflectarray with integrated 2-bit phase shifters where the total substrate and cladding mass varies from 8 kg to 14 kg. Additionally, dc power requirements for p-i-n diodes in 1-bit, 2-bit and 3-bit phase shifting circuits are approximately 19 W, 19 W, and 39 W, respectively. The dc power requirement for phase shifters using passive MESFETs is much less than 1 W.

Rule based design of conceptual models for formative evaluation

A Human-Computer Interface (HCI) Prototyping Environment with embedded evaluation capability has been investigated. This environment will be valuable in developing and refining HCI standards and evaluating program/project interface development, especially Space Station Freedom on-board displays for payload operations. This environment, which allows for rapid prototyping and evaluation of graphical interfaces, includes the following four components: (1) a HCI development tool, (2) a low fidelity simulator development tool, (3) a dynamic, interactive interface between the HCI and the simulator, and (4) an embedded evaluator that evaluates the adequacy of a HCI based on a user's performance. The embedded evaluation tool collects data while the user is interacting with the system and evaluates the adequacy of an interface based on a user's performance. This paper describes the design of conceptual models for the embedded evaluation system using a rule-based approach.

Theoretical and experimental investigation of a rectenna element for microwave power transmission

A microstrip measurement system has been designed to analyze packaged GaAs Schottky barrier diodes under small and large signal conditions. The nonlinear equivalent circuit parameters of the diode are determined using a small signal test method that analyzes the diode's scattering parameters at various bias levels. The experimental results of a 2.45 GHz diode are verified using a nonlinear circuit simulation program based on a multireflection algorithm. A 35 GHz rectenna has been built using a microstrip patch antenna and Ka-band mixer diode. The measured efficiency was 29 percent at 120 mW input power. A frequency selective surface is designed using an equivalent circuit model to reduce the second harmonic radiations for a 2.45 GHz rectenna. Theoretical results are found to be in fairly good agreement with experiments.

Theoretical and experimental development of 10 and 35 GHz rectennas

A 35 GHz rectenna has been developed with 39 percent conversion efficiency. The rectenna uses a microstrip dipole antenna and a commercially available mixer diode. Over 60 percent conversion efficiency was demonstrated using this diode at 10 GHz. A theoretical analysis was derived to predict the performance of the rectenna. The analysis is a useful tool for device and circuit design. The theoretical and experimental results should have many applications in microwave power transmission and detection.

Applications of a high power four-way power divider and combiner and a cross-over circuit

Circuits of rectangular waveguides coupled to a cylindrical cavity have been studied. Two types of circuits were developed: a high-power four-way power divider/combiner with less than 0.5 dB insertion loss over a 20 percent bandwidth and a high-power four-port cross-over circuit with less than 0.7 dB insertion loss and 20 dB isolation at X-band. To demonstrate the feasibility of the first circuit, a power combiner was built by connecting four Gunn oscillators to the four rectangular waveguide ports of the radial waveguide. A power combining efficiency of over 70 percent was achieved at X-band. The second circuit was used to feed a dual-polarization cross-slot antenna backed by a cylindrical cavity.

Theoretical and experimental study of the input impedance of the cylindrical cavity-backed rectangular slot antennas

The authors study the input impedance of a cylindrical cavity-backed slot antenna based on mode matching and the complex Poynting theorem. Two cavity-backed slot antennas were fabricated to verify the theory. The numerical results agree very well with measurements. Two resonant frequencies were found from the input impedance. One resonant frequency is attributed to the rectangular slot and the other is due to the cavity. The slot length controls the first resonant frequency and has a much stronger effect on the input impedance at the antenna operating frequency as compared with the cavity length.

A 29.3-GHz cavity-enclosed aperture-coupled circular-patch antenna for microwave circuit integration

A circular patch antenna fed by an aperture-coupled microstrip line has been demonstrated at 29.3 GHz. The patch was enclosed by a cavity to reduce surface-wave interactions in an array environment and to improve heat dissipation when using active devices. The antenna exhibited a 2:1 input VSWR (voltage standing wave ratio) over a bandwidth of 12 percent from 27.52 to 30.95 GHz. The antenna should have applications in conformal phased arrays at millimeter-wave frequencies.

Analysis and closed-form solutions of circular and rectangular apertures in the transverse plane of a circular waveguide

An analysis is carried out to determine the discontinuity susceptance of a circular or rectangular aperture in the transverse plane of a circular waveguide. Closed-form solutions based on the scattered amplitude calculation and aperture coupling theory are derived. Example solutions for a small circular aperture and a resonant rectangular aperture are given. The calculated results agree very well with the experiments. The results have many applications in the design of circular waveguide components and circular waveguide-backed aperture antennas.

Space-based millimeter-wave debris tracking radar

NORAD system currently tracks and predicts orbits of space objects of 80 mm or larger in diameter. The small debris of less than 80 mm, traveling at high speed, could cause damage to Space Station or space vehicles. To overcome this problem, a 35 GHz space-based millimeter-wave radar system is proposed to track the particles ranging in size from 4 mm to 80 mm up to a range of 25 Km. The system requires a large phased array which should be developed in monolithic circuits for cost reduction.
