Pyrochlore NaYbO2: A Potential Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate

The search for quantum spin liquids (QSL) and chemical doping in such materials to explore superconductivity have continuously attracted intense interest. Here, we report the discovery of a potential QSL candidate, pyrochlore-lattice β-NaYbO2. Colorless and transparent NaYbO2 single crystals, layered α-NaYbO2 (∼250 μm on edge) and octahedral β-NaYbO2 (∼50 μm on edge), were grown for the first time. Synchrotron X-ray single-crystal diffraction unambiguously determined that the newfound β-NaYbO2 belongs to the three-dimensional pyrochlore structure characterized by the R3̅m space group, corroborated by synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and pair distribution function. Magnetic measurements revealed no long-range magnetic order or spin glass behavior down to 0.4 K with a low boundary spin frustration factor of 17.5, suggesting a potential QSL ground state. Under high magnetic fields, the potential QSL state was broken and spins order. Our findings reveal that NaYbO2 is a fertile playground for studying novel quantum states.

Infrared Optical Anisotropy in Quasi‐1D Hexagonal Chalcogenide BaTiSe 3

Polarimetric infrared (IR) detection bolsters IR thermography by leveraging the polarization of light. Optical anisotropy, i.e., birefringence and dichroism, can be leveraged to achieve polarimetric detection. Recently, giant optical anisotropy is discovered in quasi-1D narrow-bandgap hexagonal perovskite sulfides, A 1+x TiS 3 , specifically BaTiS 3 and Sr 9/8 TiS 3 . In these materials, the critical role of atomic-scale structure modulations in the unconventional electrical, optical, and thermal properties raises the broader question of the nature of other materials that belong to this family. To address this issue, for the first time, high-quality single crystals of a largely unexplored member of the A 1+x TiX 3 (X = S, Se) family, BaTiSe 3 are synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction determined the room-temperature structure with the P31c space group, which is a superstructure of the earlier reported P6 3 /mmc structure. The crystal structure of BaTiSe 3 features antiparallel c-axis displacements similar to but of lower symmetry than BaTiS 3 , verified by the polarization dependent Raman spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is used to characterize the optical anisotropy of BaTiSe 3 , whose refractive index along the ordinary (E ⊥ c) and extraordinary (E ‖ c) optical axes is quantitatively determined by combining ellipsometry studies with FTIR. With a giant birefringence Δn ∼ 0.9, BaTiSe 3 emerges as a new candidate for miniaturized birefringent optics for mid-wave infrared to long-wave infrared imaging.

Cu site differentiation in tetracopper(I) sulfide clusters enables biomimetic N 2 O reduction

Copper clusters feature prominently in both metalloenzymes and synthetic nanoclusters that mediate catalytic redox transformations of gaseous small molecules. Such reactions are critical to biological energy conversion and are expected to be crucial parts of renewable energy economies. However, the precise roles of individual metal atoms within clusters are difficult to elucidate, particularly for cluster systems that are dynamic under operating conditions. Here, we present a metal site-specific analysis of synthetic Cu 4 (μ 4 -S) clusters that mimic the Cu Z active site of the nitrous oxide reductase enzyme. Leveraging the ability to obtain structural snapshots of both inactive and active forms of the synthetic model system, we analyzed both states using resonant X-ray diffraction anomalous fine structure (DAFS), a technique that enables X-ray absorption profiles of individual metal sites within a cluster to be extracted independently. Using DAFS, we found that a change in cluster geometry between the inactive and active states is correlated to Cu site differentiation that is presumably required for efficient activation of N 2 O gas. More precisely, we hypothesize that the Cu δ+ ∙∙∙Cu δ- pairs produced upon site differentiation are poised for N 2 O activation, as supported by computational modeling. These results provide an unprecedented level of detail on the roles of individual metal sites within the synthetic cluster system and how those roles interplay with cluster geometry to impact the reactivity function. We expect this fundamental knowledge to inform understanding of metal clusters in settings ranging from (bio)molecular to nanocluster to extended solid systems involved in energy conversion.
