Fermi surface topology and magnetotransport properties of superconducting Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2

Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 is a rare realization of a superconducting metal with a non-zero topological invariant. Here, in this study, we report the growth of high-quality single crystals of layered Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 with a superconducting transition at T c ≈ 0.80 K and upper critical fields of ~10 mT and ~5 mT for the in plane and out-of-plane directions, respectively. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal three pairs of doubly degenerate bands crossing the Fermi level all displaying clear three dimensional dispersion consistent with the overall low electronic anisotropy (<2). The multiband electronic nature of Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 is evident in magneto-transport measurements, yielding a sign changing Hall resistivity at low temperatures. The magnetoresistance is non-saturating and follows Kohler’s scaling rule. We interpret the magneto-transport data in terms of open orbits that are revealed in the DFT calculated Fermi surface. de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements using torque magnetometry on single crystals yield four frequencies for out-of-plane fields: F α = (150 ± 26) T, F β = (293 ± 10) T, F γ = (375 ± 20) T and F η = (1017 ± 12) T, with the low frequency dominating the spectrum. Through the measurement of angular dependent dHvA oscillations and DFT calculations we identify the F α frequency with an approximately ellipsoidal electron pocket centered on the L 2 point of the Brillouin zone. Lifshitz-Kosevich analysis of the dHvA oscillations reveals a small cyclotron effective mass m* = (0.11 ± 0.02)m 0 and a nontrivial Berry phase for the dominant orbit. The presence of nontrivial topology in a bulk superconductor positions Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 as a potential candidate for exploring topological superconductivity.

Evidence for unconventional superconductivity and nontrivial topology in PdTe

Abstract PdTe is a superconductor with T c ~ 4.25 K. Recently, evidence for bulk-nodal and surface-nodeless gap features has been reported in PdTe. Here, we investigate the physical properties of PdTe in both the normal and superconducting states via specific heat and magnetic torque measurements and first-principles calculations. Below T c , the electronic specific heat initially decreases in T 3 behavior (1.5 K < T < T c ) then exponentially decays. Using the two-band model, the superconducting specific heat can be well described with two energy gaps: one is 0.372 meV and another 1.93 meV. The calculated bulk band structure consists of two electron bands (α and β) and two hole bands (γ and η) at the Fermi level. Experimental detection of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations allows us to identify four frequencies ( F α = 65 T, F β = 658 T, F γ = 1154 T, and F η = 1867 T for H // a ), consistent with theoretical predictions. Nontrivial α and β bands are further identified via both calculations and the angle dependence of the dHvA oscillations. Our results suggest that PdTe is a candidate for unconventional superconductivity.

Magnetic Breakdown and Topology in the Kagome Superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 under High Magnetic Field

The recently discovered layered kagome metals of composition AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit a complex interplay among superconductivity, charge density wave order, topologically nontrivial electronic band structure and geometrical frustration. Here, we probe the electronic band structure underlying these exotic correlated electronic states in CsV 3 Sb 5 with quantum oscillation measurements in pulsed fields up to 86 T. The high-field data reveal a sequence of magnetic breakdown orbits that allows the construction of a model for the folded Fermi surface of CsV 3 Sb 5 . The dominant features are large triangular Fermi surface sheets that cover almost half the folded Brillouin zone. These sheets have not yet been detected in angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and display pronounced nesting. In conclusion, the Berry phases of the electron orbits have been deduced from Landau level fan diagrams near the quantum limit without the need for extrapolations, thereby unambiguously establishing the nontrivial topological character of several electron bands in this kagome lattice superconductor.

Coexistence of Bulk-Nodal and Surface-Nodeless Cooper Pairings in a Superconducting Dirac Semimetal

The interplay of nontrivial topology and superconductivity in condensed matter physics gives rise to exotic phenomena. However, materials are extremely rare where it is possible to explore the full details of the superconducting pairing. Here, we investigate the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap distribution in a novel Dirac material PdTe. Using high resolution, low temperature photoemission spectroscopy, we establish it as a spin-orbit coupled Dirac semimetal with the topological Fermi arc crossing the Fermi level on the (010) surface. This spin-textured surface state exhibits a fully gapped superconducting Cooper pairing structure below $T_{c}$ ~ 4.5 K. Moreover, we find a node in the bulk near the Brillouin zone boundary, away from the topological Fermi arc. In conclusion, these observations not only demonstrate the band resolved electronic correlation between topological Fermi arc states and the way it induces Cooper pairing in PdTe, but also provide a rare case where surface and bulk states host a coexistence of nodeless and nodal gap structures enforced by spin-orbit coupling.

Quantum oscillations with angular dependence in PdTe 2 single crystals

The layered transition-metal dichalcogenide PdTe 2 has been discovered to possess bulk Dirac points as well as topological surface states. By measuring the magnetization (up to 7 T) and magnetic torque (up to 35 T) in single crystalline PdTe2, we observe distinct de Haas–van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations. Eight frequencies are identified with H||c, with two low frequencies (F α = 8 T and F β = 117 T) dominating the spectrum. The effective masses obtained by fitting the Lifshitz–Kosevich (LK) equation to the data are $m_α^* =0.059m_0$ and $m_β^* =0.067m_0$ where $m_0$ is the free electron mass. The corresponding Landau fan diagrams allow the determination of the Berry phase for these oscillations resulting in values of ~0.67π for the 3D α band (hole-type) (down to the 1st Landau level) and ~0.23π–0.73π for the 3D β band (electron-type) (down to the 3rd Landau level). By investigating the angular dependence of the dHvA oscillations, we find that the frequencies and the corresponding Berry phase (Φ B ) vary with the field direction, with a Φ B ~ 0 when H is 10°–30° away from the ab plane for both α and β bands. Finally, the multiple band nature of PdTe 2 is further confirmed from Hall effect measurements.

Evidence for topological semimetallicity in a chain-compound TaSe 3

Among one-dimensional transition-metal trichalcogenides, TaSe 3 is unconventional in many respects. One is its strong topological semimetallicity as predicted by first-principles calculations. We report the experimental investigations of the electronic properties of one-dimensional-like TaSe 3 single crystals. While the b-axis electrical resistivity shows good metallicity with a high residual resistivity ratio greater than 100, an extremely large magnetoresistance is observed reaching ≈7 × 10 3 % at 1.9 K for 14 T. Interestingly, the magnetoresistance follows the Kohler’s rule with nearly quadratic magnetic field dependence, consistent with the electron–hole compensation scenario as confirmed by our Hall conductivity data. Both the longitudinal and Hall conductivities show Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations with two frequencies: F α ≈ 97 T and F β ≈ 186 T. Quantitative analysis indicates that F α results from the two-dimensional-like electron band with the non-trivial Berry phase [1.1π], and Fβ from the hole band with the trivial Berry phase [0(3D) -0.16π(2D)]. Our experimental findings are consistent with the predictions based on first-principles calculations.
