Conductive surface states and Kondo exhaustion in insulating YbIr 3 Si 7

The interplay of Kondo screening and magnetic ordering in strongly correlated materials containing local moments is a subtle problem. Usually the number of conduction electrons per unit cell matches or exceeds the number of moments, and a Kondo-screened heavy Fermi liquid develops at low temperatures. Changing the pressure, magnetic field, or chemical doping can displace this heavy Fermi liquid in favor of a magnetically ordered state. Alternatively, Kondo singlet formation can be suppressed when the number of conduction electrons is small compared to the number of magnetic moments, known as the Kondo exhaustion scenario. Furthermore we report the discovery of such an “exhausted” Kondo lattice material, YbIr 3 Si 7 , where the bulk electrical conductivity tends to zero in the antiferromagnetic state below the Néel temperature T N = 4.1 K, as all the free carriers are consumed in the formation of Kondo singlets. By contrast, the surface is conducting, as the Yb 3+ ions relax into larger nonmagnetic Yb 2+ in the presence of reduced chemical pressure, which shifts the chemical potential.

Coarse-fine residual gravity cancellation system with magnetic levitation

Aircraft flight along parabolic trajectories have been proposed and executed in order to achieve low cost, near free fall conditions of moderate duration. This paper describes a six degree of freedom experiment isolation system designed to cancel out residual accelerations due to mechanical vibrations and errors in aircraft trajectory. The isolation system consists of a fine motion magnetic levitator whose stator is transported by a conventional coarse motion stage. The levitator uses wide gap voice coil actuators and has the dual purpose of isolating the experiment platform from aircraft vibrations and actively cancelling residual accelerations through feedback control. The course motion stage tracks the levitated platform in order to keep the levitator's coils centered within their matching magnetic gaps. Aspects of system design, an analysis of the proposed control strategy and simulation results are presented. Feasibility experiments are also discussed.

Thermosolutal convection in high-aspect-ratio enclosures

Convection in high-aspect-ratio rectangular enclosures with combined horizontal temperature and concentration gradients is studied experimentally. An electrochemical system is employed to impose the concentration gradients. The solutal buoyancy force either opposes or augments the thermal buoyancy force. Due to a large difference between the thermal and solutal diffusion rates the flow possesses double-diffusive characteristics. Various complex flow patterns are observed with different experimental conditions.

Fingering flow patterns of thermosolutal convection in rectangular enclosures

Convection in rectangular enclosures with combined horizontal temperature and concentration gradients is studied. An electrochemical system is employed to impose the concentration gradients. Due to a large difference between the thermal and solutal diffusion rates the flow possesses double-diffusive characteristics. Very complex fingering flow patterns are observed around the two-phase interfaces. The main objective of the present work is to obtain more information on the flows near the two vertical phase interfaces under various parametric conditions. The fingering flows near the crystal could be one of the most important factors to cause the crystal imperfections. The ranges of the parameters studied are Sc (Schmidt number)=2200 to 2400, Pr (Prandtl number)=4.0 to 7.0, Gr sub T (Grashof number)=2.50 x 10 to the 6th to 5.10 x 10 to the 7th power, Ar (aspect ratio)=0.61 to 3.0, and N (buoyancy ratio)=0.05 to 54.8.

Photosynthesis of organic compounds in the atmosphere of Jupiter

An efficient conversion of CH4 to hydrocarbons and HCN takes place when NH3 is photolysed in the presence of CH4, H2, and He using a 184.9 nm light source. The extent of NH3 decomposition after a 1 hr exposure was determined spectrophotometrically; CH4, N2, and C2 and C3 hydrocarbons were detected and analyzed by mass spectrometry. Photolysis of one molar equivalent of NH3 results in the loss of 0.84 molar equivalent of CH4, which apparently reacts with hot hydrogen atoms produced by photolysis. The 8% of the NH3 which is not converted to N2 probably is converted to organic amines and nitrile derivatives. The results indicate that NH3 photolysis is a highly probable mechanism for the conversion of methane to more complex hydrocarbons in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter, and predict the occurrence of HCN, NH2NH2, and higher hydrocarbons in the Jovian atmosphere above the NH3 clouds.
