Ultra-High Efficiency and Stable All-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells

In the project period, the research team has fabricated more than 6,000 single-junction wide-bandgap (wide-E g ) and low-bandgap (low-E g ) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and more than 2,000 all-perovskite tandem solar cells (APTSCs). The best-performing wide-E g and low-E g PSCs and APTSCs showed PCEs greater than 19%, 23%, and 30%, respectively. The average PCEs for wide-E g and low-E g PSCs and APTSCs fabricated by the benchmark processes are (18.5 ± 0.4)%, (21.9 ± 0.8)%, and (26.8 ± 2.1)%, respectively. We have demonstrated APTSCs with T 80 lifetime of more than 1,000 h, which were measured by maximum power point tracking (MPPT) under one sun operation in the air. The team has also utilized various advanced characterization techniques to study the optical and electrical properties of wide-E g and low-E g perovskite materials and devices, developing a better understanding of the unique working principle and degradation mechanism of APTSCs. The team has met most GNG decision criteria except for the stability goal of APTSCs under 85 °C/85 RH accelerated lifetime test (ALT). The shortfall of the device ALT stability is mainly limited by the intrinsic instability of Sn-Pb perovskites under illumination at elevated temperatures. The team discussed with stakeholders in the PV academic and industry about these durability concerns and concluded that this is the major technical barrier preventing the market entry of APTSCs. Future fundamental study and R&D work are needed to advance this promising technology.

Roadmap on commercialization of metal halide perovskite photovoltaics

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) represent one of the most promising emerging photovoltaic technologies due to their high power conversion efficiency. However, despite the huge progress made not only in terms of the efficiency achieved, but also fundamental understanding of the relevant physics of the devices and issues which affect their efficiency and stability, there are still unresolved problems and obstacles on the path toward commercialization of this promising technology. In this roadmap, we aim to provide a concise and up to date summary of outstanding issues and challenges, and the progress made toward addressing these issues. While the format of this article is not meant to be a comprehensive review of the topic, it provides a collection of the viewpoints of the experts in the field, which covers a broad range of topics related to PSC commercialization, including those relevant for manufacturing (scaling up, different types of devices), operation and stability (various factors), and environmental issues (in particular the use of lead). We hope that the article will provide a useful resource for researchers in the field and that it will facilitate discussions and move forward toward addressing the outstanding challenges in this fast-developing field.

Multifunctional polymer composite coatings and adhesives by incorporating cellulose nanomaterials

Regardless of their applications, polymers are still considered mechanically weak and functionally insufficient for certain demanding coating and adhesive uses. To address those issues, nanomaterials have been extensively studied as reinforcing fillers, which have been proven to effectively promote the performance of polymer coatings/adhesives. However, conventional nanofillers are expensive and non-biodegradable. Meanwhile, cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs), a class of nanomaterials produced from biomass feedstocks, can circumvent the drawbacks of conventional nanofillers. Here, this review paper first focuses on the multi-functionalities CNMs bring to polymer coatings, including mechanical reinforcement (wear resistance and hardness enhancement), gas barrier, flame resistance, corrosion resistance, self-healing (controlled-release), optical regulation, self-cleaning/antifouling, and antimicrobial characteristics. Then we discuss the benefits of CNM addition to polymer adhesives, such as mechanical enhancement, curing promotion, volatile organic compound (VOC) suppression, and electrical conductivity. Finally, we provide insights into future research efforts with CNMs. The goal of this paper is to promote the pilot-scale study and commercial use of CNMs as multifunctional additives in green and sustainable polymer composite coating and adhesive formulations.

Activating Single‐Atom Ni Site via First‐Shell Si Modulation Boosts Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract Atomically dispersed nitrogen‐coordinated 3d transition‐metal site on carbon support (M‐NC) are promising alternatives to Pt group metal‐based catalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, despite the excellent activities of most of M‐NC catalysts, such as Fe‐NC, Co‐NC et al., their durability is far from satisfactory due to Fenton reaction. Herein, this work reports a novel Si‐doped Ni‐NC catalyst (Ni‐SiNC) that possesses high activity and excellent stability. X‐ray absorption fine structure and aberration‐corrected transmission electron microscopy uncover that the single‐atom Ni site is coordinated with one Si atom and three N atoms, constructing Ni‐Si 1 N 3 moiety. The Ni‐SiNC catalyst exhibits a half‐wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.866 V versus RHE, with a distinguished long‐term durability in alkaline media of only 10 mV negative shift in E 1/2 after 35 000 cycles, which is also validated in Zn‐air battery. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Ni‐Si 1 N 3 moiety facilitates ORR kinetics through optimizing the adsorption of intermediates.

Promoting the water dissociation of nickel sulfide electrocatalyst through introducing cationic vacancies for accelerated hydrogen evolution kinetics in alkaline media

Developing cost-effective non-precious electrocatalysts with excellent HER performance in alkaline media is of significance for industrial hydrogen production. Herein, we successfully endow Ni 3 S 2 with unprecedentedly enhanced alkaline HER activities by introducing nickel vacancies. The Ni 3 S 2 catalyst with nickel vacancies exhibits an ultralow overpotential of 35 mV at 10 mA cm –2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte, outperforming commercial Pt/C (56 mV) and most reported non-precious electrocatalysts. The electron paramagnetic resonance and X-ray absorption fine structure etc. validates the formation of Ni vacancies and the change of the geometric/electronic structure of Ni 3 S 2 . Additionally, the theoretical calculations reveal that the Ni sites with higher valence state neighbouring the Ni vacancies can promote the water dissociation, playing a vital role in accelerating HER kinetics in alkaline media. Finally, this work may provide a universal strategy to enhance the HER activity of transition-metal compound catalysts in alkaline media by means of cationic defect engineering.

Tunning the linkage of structure units to enable stable spinel-based cathode in the wide potential window

The low practical capacity (<140 mA h g –1 ) of spinel phase LiMn 2–x Ni x O 4 (0 < x < 1) excludes it from high energy density lithium ion batteries (LIBs) for powering electric vehicles. Extending the operating potential window from 3.0 to 4.8 V to 2.0–4.8 V can double the capacity, but result in fast capacity decay due to the drastic cubic-tetragonal phase transition below 3.0 V, induced by serious Jahn-Teller (J-T) distortion of structure units (Mn 3+ )O 6 octahedra. Herein, we propose a novel strategy to suppress J-T distortion by tuning the linkage of structure units MnO 6 octahedra. The original full-vertex-sharing LiO 4 tetrahedra around MnO 6 octahedra in spinel phase are partially replaced by edge-sharing LiO 6 octahedra, which relate Mn-O bonds along the dz 2 direction with those along the d xy plane, thus significantly mitigating J-T distortion and suppressing the phase transition when discharged to 2.0 V. Following this strategy, the prepared spinel-based cathode achieves a high reversible capacity of about 290 mA h g –1 and an energy density up to 957 W h kg –1 with improved cycling stability. Furthermore, this work finds a new opportunity for the traditional spinel cathode towards applications in high energy density LIBs in a low cost and sustainable manner.

Impact of Humidity and Temperature on the Stability of the Optical Properties and Structure of MAPbI3, MA0.7FA0.3PbI3 and (FAPbI3)0.95(MAPbBr3)0.05 Perovskite Thin Films

In situ real-time spectroscopic ellipsometry (RTSE) measurements have been conducted on MAPbI3, MA0.7FA0.3PbI3, and (FAPbI3)0.95(MAPbBr3)0.05 perovskite thin films when exposed to different levels of relative humidity at given temperatures over time. Analysis of RTSE measurements track changes in the complex dielectric function spectra and structure, which indicate variations in stability influenced by the underlying material, preparation method, and perovskite composition. MAPbI3 and MA0.7FA0.3PbI3 films deposited on commercial fluorine-doped tin oxide coated glass are more stable than corresponding films deposited on soda lime glass directly. (FAPbI3)0.95(MAPbBr3)0.05 films on soda lime glass showed improved stability over the other compositions regardless of the substrate, and this is attributed to the preparation method as well as the final composition.
