Understanding the asymmetric orientations and stress states in polycrystalline NiTi SMA by in-situ synchrotron-based high-energy X-ray diffraction

The stress-induced martensite transformations (SIMTs) dramatically affect the recoverable strain and mechanical response of polycrystalline NiTi. An in-depth understanding of the propagation manner and orientation preference of SIMTs is therefore crucial. Here, in this work, we present a unique asymmetric anisotropy of SIMTs and lattice strains induced by Lüders-type deformation in polycrystalline NiTi, achieved through a combination of in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and uniaxial tensile loading and unloading experiments. Our experimental findings reveal that in polycrystalline NiTi under uniaxial deformation, the asymmetry of SIMTs is attributed to the inhomogeneous strain field caused by the Lüders-type mechanism. The asymmetrical SIMT starts with the forward Lüder band and disappears along with the backward Lüder band. The austenite with the favored orientation of $\langle$110$\rangle$ A //loading direction (LD) transformed and recovered back at a higher rate compared to other orientations during both loading and unloading.

In-situ synchrotron diffraction study of the localized phase transformation and deformation behavior in NiTi SMA

The accumulation of dislocation defect was generally recognized as the origin of residual strain and the pseudoelastic instability in NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs). In the present work, the pseudoelastic instability was studied by comparing the characteristics of Luders-type and uniform transformation mechanism via in-situ synchrotron-based high-energy X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization. The experimental results showed that the Liiders-type mechanism could result in an intense and sharp increase of stress-induced martensite at the expense of austenite. The residual austenite with high lattice strain within the Luders band might be fully martensitic beyond the stress plateau of the E-a curve. With the accumulation of dislocation defect, the uniform martensitic transformation took place by the progressively homogeneous nucleation and growth of martensite in a local region. While the residual martensite and dislocation density was stabilized during mechanical cycling, the deformation of NiTi SMA turned into a mixture of (i) a balanced forward and reverse phase transformation between austenite and martensite, as well as (ii) the elastic deformation of the aggregate. As a result, there was no apparent increase in dislocation density detected during further cycling.

Ultrarelativistic quark-nucleus scattering in a light-front Hamiltonian approach

In this work, we investigate the scattering of a quark on a heavy nucleus at high energies using the time-dependent basis light-front quantization (tBLFQ) formalism, which is the first application of the tBLFQ formalism in QCD. We present the real-time evolution of the quark wave function in a strong classical color field of the relativistic nucleus, described as the color glass condensate. The quark and the nucleus color field are simulated in the QCD SU(3) color space. We calculate the total and the differential cross sections, and the quark distribution in coordinate and color spaces using the tBLFQ approach. We recover the eikonal cross sections in the eikonal limit. We find that the differential cross section from the tBLFQ simulation is in agreement with a perturbative calculation at large $p_⊥$, and it deviates from the perturbative calculation at small $p_⊥$ due to higher-order contributions. In particular, we relax the eikonal limit by letting the quark carry realistic finite longitudinal momenta. We study the sub-eikonal effect on the quark through the transverse coordinate distribution of the quark with different longitudinal momentum, and we find the sub-eikonal effect to be sizable. Our results can significantly reduce the theoretical uncertainties in small $p_⊥$ region which has important implications to the phenomenology of the hadron-nucleus and deep inelastic scattering at high energies.
