Micro-patterning of spintronic emitters enables ultrabroadband structured terahertz radiation

Abstract Structured light beams offer promising properties for a variety of applications, but the generation of broadband structured light remains a challenge. New opportunities are emerging in the terahertz frequency range owing to recent progress in light-driven ultrafast vectorial currents through spatially patterning spintronic and optoelectronic systems.

Metasurface-based varifocal Alvarez lens at microwave frequencies

Lenses with a tunable focus are highly desirable but remain a challenge. Here, we demonstrate a microwave varifocal meta-lens based on the Alvarez lens principle, consisting of two mechanically movable tri-layer metasurface phase plates with reversed cubic spatial profiles. The manufactured multilayer Alvarez meta-lens enables microwave beam collimation/focusing at frequencies centered at 7.5 GHz, and shows one octave focal length tunability when transversely translating the phase plates by 8 cm. The measurements reveal a gain enhancement up to 15 dB, 3-dB beam width down to 3.5 ∘ , and relatively broad 3-dB bandwidth of 3 GHz. These advantageous characteristics, along with its simplicity, compactness, and lightweightness, make the demonstrated flat Alvarez meta-lens suitable for deployment in many microwave systems.

Ultrafast terahertz emission from emerging symmetry-broken materials

Abstract Nonlinear optical spectroscopies are powerful tools for investigating both static material properties and light-induced dynamics. Terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy has emerged in the past several decades as a versatile method for directly tracking the ultrafast evolution of physical properties, quasiparticle distributions, and order parameters within bulk materials and nanoscale interfaces. Ultrafast optically-induced THz radiation is often analyzed mechanistically in terms of relative contributions from nonlinear polarization, magnetization, and various transient free charge currents. While this offers material-specific insights, more fundamental symmetry considerations enable the generalization of measured nonlinear tensors to much broader classes of systems. We thus frame the present discussion in terms of underlying broken symmetries, which enable THz emission by defining a system directionality in space and/or time, as well as more detailed point group symmetries that determine the nonlinear response tensors. Within this framework, we survey a selection of recent studies that utilize THz emission spectroscopy to uncover basic properties and complex behaviors of emerging materials, including strongly correlated, magnetic, multiferroic, and topological systems. We then turn to low-dimensional systems to explore the role of designer nanoscale structuring and corresponding symmetries that enable or enhance THz emission. This serves as a promising route for probing nanoscale physics and ultrafast light-matter interactions, as well as facilitating advances in integrated THz systems. Furthermore, the interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic material symmetries, in addition to hybrid structuring, may stimulate the discovery of exotic properties and phenomena beyond existing material paradigms.

Broadband titanium nitride disordered metasurface absorbers

We experimentally demonstrate titanium nitride (TiN) broadband metasurface perfect absorbers by conformally coating plasmonic TiN films onto disordered anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) nanotemplates. The disordered metasurface absorbers exhibit polarization-insensitive and weak angle-dependent perfect absorption over the entire visible and near-infrared spectral regions (300 < λ < 2500 nm). We show from experimental results and numerical simulations that the light scattering induced by the strong disorder of the AAO nanopores and the strong absorption of the TiN deposited on their sidewall are of critical importance for achieving broadband perfect absorption. The TiN disordered metasurface perfect absorbers are superior to many other types of broadband perfect absorbers previously reported and are more suitable for practical applications especially in harsh environments. The device concept for broadband perfect absorption based on plasmonic metal-nitride film coated disordered dielectric media could potentially be extended to significantly enhance the efficiency of solar energy harvesting and the performance of hot-carrier based optoelectronics.

Surface-wave-assisted nonreciprocity in spatio-temporally modulated metasurfaces

Emerging photonic functionalities are mostly governed by the fundamental principle of Lorentz reciprocity. Lifting the constraints imposed by this principle could circumvent deleterious effects that limit the performance of photonic systems. Most efforts to date have been limited to waveguide platforms. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a spatiotemporally modulated metasurface capable of complete violation of Lorentz reciprocity by reflecting an incident beam into far-field radiation in forward scattering, but into near-field surface waves in reverse scattering. These observations are shown both in nonreciprocal beam steering and nonreciprocal focusing. We also demonstrate nonreciprocal behavior of propagative-only waves in the frequency- and momentum-domains, and simultaneously in both. We develop a generalized Bloch-Floquet theory which offers physical insights into Lorentz nonreciprocity for arbitrary spatial phase gradients, and its predictions are in excellent agreement with experiments. Our work opens exciting opportunities in applications where free-space nonreciprocal wave propagation is desired.
