A prototype Ka-/Ka-band dichroic plate with stepped rectangular apertures

A prototype five-layer Ka-/Ka-band dichroic plate was fabricated and measured. This dichroic plate was designed to pass Ka-band uplink (34.2-34.7 GHz) and to reflect Ka-band downlink (31.8-32.3 GHz) for dual-frequency operation in the Deep Space Network to support the future Cassini mission. The theoretical calculation and the experimental measurement of the reflected resonant frequencies were within 0.24 percent for circular polarization. The computer program, which was used to design the dichroic plate with stepped apertures, was then verified.

Analysis of a disk-on-rod surface wave element inside a corrugated horn using the mode-matching technique

A disk-on-rod inside a corrugated horn is one of the horn configurations for dual-frequency or wide-band operation. A mode-matching analysis method is described. A disk-on-rod inside a corrugated horn is represented as a series of coaxial waveguide sections and circular waveguide sections connected to each other. Three kinds of junctions need to be considered: coaxial-to-coaxial, coaxial-to-circular, and circular-to-circular. A computer program was developed to calculate the scattering matrix and the radiation pattern of a disk-on-rod inside a corrugated horn. The software as verified by experiment, and good agreement between calculation and measurement was obtained. The disk-on-rod inside a corrugated horn design gives an option to the Deep Space Network dual-frequency operation system, which currently is a two-horn/one-dichroic plate system.

Computation of reflected and transmitted horn radiation patterns for a dichroic plate

A previous dichroic plate analysis has assumed that an ideal uniform plane wave illuminates the dichroic plate at a single angle of incidence. In fact, a horn radiates energy at the dichroic plate and illuminates it at many different angles. To model the horn and dichroic plate system, the horn pattern is represented as a group of plane waves traveling in different directions. The details of this analysis are presented this article. The calculated and measured reflected radiation patterns show good agreement. The noise temperature predicted from the horn pattern model is shown to be more accurate than that from a simple plane-wave model.

Performance of the X-/Ka/KABLE-band dichroic plate in the DSS-13 beam waveguide antenna

The first Ka-band downlink demonstration was recently carried out by the Ka-Band Link Experiment (KABLE) in association with the Mars Observer spacecraft. In order to support the mission, a dichroic plate was required in the DSS-13 beam waveguide antenna to allow simultaneous X- and Ka-band operation. An X-/ Ka-/ KABLE-band dichroic plate was designed to transmit Ka-band downlink (31.8-32.3 GHz), Ka-band uplink (34.2-34.7 GHz), and KABLE (33.6-33.8 GHz) frequencies, while reflecting X-band (8.4-8.5 GHz). A computer program was developed for the analysis of a dichroic plate with rectangular apertures by using the mode-matching method. The plate was then fabricated and tested. The reflection, group delay, and noise temperature in the antenna system due to the dichroic plate were measured. The experimental results show good agreement with theoretical prediction.

Feasibility study of a Ka-/Ka-band dichroic plate with stepped rectangular apertures

For the Cassini spacecraft mission, a dichroic plate is needed to pass Ka-band uplink (34.2 to 34.7 GHz) and to reflect Ka-band downlink (31.8 to 32.3 GHz) for dual-frequency operation in the Deep Space Network. The special characteristic of the Ka-/Ka-band dichroic plate is that the pass band and the reflective band are only 1.9 GHz (5.7 percent) apart. A thick dichroic plate with stepped rectangular apertures that function as resonator filters was chosen for the Ka-/Ka-band dichroic plate design. The results of the feasibility study are presented in this article.

Study of narrow-band dichroic plates with circular, rectangular, or Pyleguide apertures

The dichroic plate considered in this article is a metal plate perforated with arrays of apertures such that electromagnetic waves of certain frequencies pass through the plate and other frequencies are reflected. The shape of the apertures is an important contributor to the performance of the dichroic plate. An S/X dichroic plate, which passes X-band (8.4-8.45 GHz) and reflects S-band (2.0-2.32 GHz), is chosen for a case study. A comparison of the performance of dichroic plates of the same thickness and array pattern is presented for three different aperture shapes: circular, Pyleguide, and rectangular.

DSS 13 phase 2 pedestal room microwave layout

The design and predicted performance is described of the microwave layout for three band operation of the beam waveguide antenna Deep Space Station 13. Three pedestal room microwave candidate layout designs were produced for simultaneous X/S and X/Ka band operation. One of the three designs was chosen based on given constraints, and for this design the microwave performance was estimated.

X-/Ka-band dichroic plate design and grating lobe study

An X-/Ka-band dichroic plate is needed for simultaneously receiving X-band and Ka-band in the DSS-13 Beam Waveguide Antenna. The plate is transparent to the allocated Ka-band downlink (31.8-32.3 GHz) and the frequency band for the Mars Observer Ka-band Beacon Link Experiment (KABLE) (33.6-33.8 GHz), while at the same time reflecting the X-band downlink (8.4-8.5 GHz). The design is made using a computer program for dichroic plates with rectangular holes. The theoretical performance of the X-/Ka-band dichroic plate is presented. A study of the grating lobe problem is also included in this article.

Gaussian beam and physical optics iteration technique for wideband beam waveguide feed design

The Gaussian beam technique has become increasingly popular for wideband beam waveguide (BWG) design. However, it is observed that the Gaussian solution is less accurate for smaller mirrors (approximately less than 30 lambda in diameter). Therefore, a high-performance wideband BWG design cannot be achieved by using the Gaussian beam technique alone. This article demonstrates a new design approach by iterating Gaussian beam and BWG parameters simultaneously at various frequencies to obtain a wideband BWG. The result is further improved by comparing it with physical optics results and repeating the iteration.

Analysis of a thick dichroic plate with rectangular holes at arbitrary angles of incidence

A thick dichroic plate that is transparent to one frequency band while at the same time reflective to other frequencies is needed for high power transmission in the Deep Space Network. Software based on the method of moments was developed to design a thick dichroic plate with rectangular holes. A test dichroic plate was fabricated, and an experiment was performed to verify the computer code. Good agreement was found between theory and experiment.

Structural dynamics system model reduction

Loads analysis for structural dynamic systems is usually performed by finite element models. Because of the complexity of the structural system, the model contains large number of degree-of-freedom. The large model is necessary since details of the stress, loads and responses due to mission environments are computed. However, a simplified model is needed for other tasks such as pre-test analysis for modal testing, and control-structural interaction studies. A systematic method of model reduction for modal test analysis is presented. Perhaps it will be of some help in developing a simplified model for the control studies.

System identification for large space structure damage assessment

The need for monitoring the dynamic characteristics of large structural systems for purposes of assessing the potential degradation of structural properties was established. A theory for assessing the occurrence, location, and extent of potential damage was developed utilizing on-orbit response measurements. Feasibility of the method is demonstrated using a simple structural system as an example.

Vibration of a large space beam under gravity effect

Future space structures will have a low mass density and high flexibility, with ground test dynamic behavior differing significantly from that in zero-G orbit. Attention is presently given to the vibration behavior of a beam deformed by its own weight; the results obtained by the differential equations for both the static and dynamic responses of a large, simply supported beam, which are derived and solved analytically, allow ground test experiment measurements to be used for orbital dynamic characteristics verification efforts.

Verification of large beam-type space structures

The verification approach here proposed for large, beam-type space structures consists of a first part, which removes the gravity effect on the substructure tested and identifies its on-orbit dynamic characteristics, on the basis of ground test measurements, and a second part which develops an adequate scaling law that extrapolates the dynamic characteristics of the prototype structure by using results from the substructure. These approaches are presently demonstrated for the cases of a wrap-rib antenna's feed support structure and a candidate Space Shuttle flight experiment.

Stiffness control of large space structures

A method of using internal force producing dual element/actuators for vibration suppression of large space structures is proposed. The technique is applied to a vibrating string and to a low order system. Response feedback control for the vibrating string and selected modal control are used for achieving the modal damping. The actuators may be electrically powered and are suitable for structures with extremely low rigidity.
