256 x 256 PACE-1 PV HgCdTe focal plane arrays for medium and short wavelength infrared applications

The development of two 256 by 256 hybrid HgCdTe focal plane array (FPA) families is described, and their performance is discussed. The hybrid FPAs employ a PV HgCdTe detector array and custom Si CMOS readouts. The PACE-1 process was used to fabricate the detectors, whereby the liquid phase epitaxial growth of HgCdTe occurs on sapphire substrates buffered by a layer of CdTe. The performance characteristics of the detector arrays are given. A tactical 256 by 256 CMOS readout is tested, in which a high functional yield was achieved. Updated test results are given for a 256 by 256 readout circuit developed for use in an orbital replacement instrument for the Hubble Space Telescope. The characterizations of several MWIR and SWIR FPAs were thorough and shown to be reliable. The pixel yield, maximum FPA responsivity nonuniformity, and SWIR FPA read noise for the tests are given. The high contrast and insignificant fixed pattern noise of the imagery from the MWIR 256 by 256 FPA are emphasized. These qualities were obtained when the device was operating at 80 k and utilizing f/2 optics with an 8-in. focal length and a 4.4 micron high pass filter.

On the impact of initially stressed composite laminates

The impact response behavior of initially stressed composite laminates is investigated using the finite element method. An experimentally established contact law is incorporated into the finite element program. The Newmark time integration algorithm is used for solving the time dependent equations of the plate and the impactor. Numerical results, including the contact force history, deflection, and strain in the plate, are presented. Effects of impact velocity, initial stress, and the mass and size of the impactor are discussed.

Analysis of impact response of buckled composite laminates

The dynamic response of buckled composite plates impacted by a hard object is studied. A nine-node isoparametric finite element, developed based on the Mindlin plate theory and von Karman large deflection assumptions, is used for both postbuckling and impact analyses. In order to evaluate the contact force, an experimentally established contact law which accounts for the permanent indentation is employed. The static postbuckling problem of laminated plates is first considered. The impact responses include contact force histories, dynamic deflections, and dynamic strains in the plate for various buckling conditions. In addition, free vibration of buckled laminated plates is also solved to determine the range of natural frequencies which are needed to choose a proper time increment for time integration in the impact analysis.

Dynamic large deflection response of composite laminates subjected to impact

Impact responses of composite laminates with and without initial stresses are investigated using the finite element method. A nine-node isoparametric quadrilateral element based on the Mindlin plate theory and the von Karman large deflection assumptions is developed. An experimentally established contact law which accounts for the permanent indentation is incorporated into the finite element program to evaluate the impact force. In the time integration, the Newmark constant acceleration algorithm is used in conjunction with successive iterations within each time step. Numerical results, including the contact force histories, deflections and strains in the plate, are presented.

Nonlinear transient responses of initially stressed composite plates

The nonlinear transient response of initially stressed composite plates is investigated using the finite element method. A nine-node isoparametric quadrilateral element is developed to model laminated plates under initial deformation and initial stress according to the Mindlin plate theory and von Karman large deflection assumptions. In the time integration, the Newmark constant acceleration method in conjunction with an efficient and accurate iteration scheme is used. Numerical results for deflections and bending moments for isotropic and laminated plates are obtained.

Atomic nitrogen emissions from photodissociation of N2

Cross sections for the production of N I emissions at 1412, 1493, and 1743 A and the undispersed fluorescence in the range 1050-1800 A produced through photodissociative excitation of N2 have been determined at selected intense atomic emission lines and throughout the synchrotron radiation continuum from 500 to 620 A. The neutral excited atomic nitrogen fragments are produced through direct dissociation processes as well as predissociation from the well-known two-electron excited Rydberg states. The yield for photodissociative excitation processes is found to have the same magnitude as that for photodissociative ionization processes reported by other investigators. The Doppler shifts of the excited atomic fragments have been calculated, and the relevance to atmospheric observations is discussed.
