In this study, the tensile response of cubic silicon carbide (SiC) bulk containing cavities (voids and He bubbles) has been investigated using molecular dynamic simulations. The formation of cavities in SiC leads to a significant degradation in the mechanical properties of SiC with more influence on material fracture than initial elastic deformation. The brittle-to-ductile transition occurs in cavity-embedded SiC as the pressure in He bubbles increases. This is associated with the deformation mechanism that bond breaking at a low He bubble pressure transfers to extensive dislocation activities at a higher He bubble pressure. The cavities can effectively concentrate stress around them in the direction perpendicular to the tension, which leads to preferred cracking in the region with a higher tensile stress. The failure mechanism as revealed by this study improves understanding of property degradation in SiC that may be useful for applications of SiC in advanced nuclear energy systems.

Surface enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy is a powerful tool in which plasmonically enhanced electromagnetic fields provide high-sensitivity molecular detection. Most SEIRA platforms operate at a single resonant frequency, which must be tuned to match that of the target molecule, and commonly rely on time-consuming lithographic techniques. This study presents a high-throughput and cost-effective plasmonic metasurface for broadband, tunable, and strong infrared signal enhancement. The platform is built upon the principle of dispersion-engineered plasmonic Fabry–Pérot (FP) nanocavity arrays. It offers 1) tight squeezing of infrared (IR) photons into deep sub-wavelength nano-volumes and 2) spectrally tunable near-field enhancements of up to ≈10 6 , two to three orders of magnitude higher than most optical metasurface systems. By coupling multilayer nano-thin film deposition and nanoskiving fabrication techniques, the dispersive FP metasurfaces can be rapidly and reproducibly constructed in a scalable and lithography-free manner. Using IR spectroscopy, the selective and sensitive label-free detection of a molecular monolayer is achieved at a range of frequencies. An enhancement factor of nearly 10 5 is measured at the carbonyl (C = O) vibrational marker band of the molecule. The confluence of high field enhancement, broadband plasmonic response, and facile fabrication makes this metasurface a promising platform for SEIRA spectroscopy.
Rapid progress in modern technologies demands zero thermal expansion (ZTE) materials with multi-property profiles to withstand harsh service conditions. Thus far, the majority of documented ZTE materials have shortcomings in different aspects that limit their practical utilization. Here, we report on a superior isotropic ZTE alloy with collective properties regarding wide operating temperature windows, high strength-stiffness, and cyclic thermal stability. A boron-migration-mediated solid-state reaction (BMSR) constructs a salient “plum pudding” structure in a dual-phase Er-Fe-B alloy, where the precursor ErFe 10 phase reacts with the migrated boron and transforms into the target Er 2 Fe 14 B (pudding) and α-Fe phases (plum). The formation of such microstructure helps to eliminate apparent crystallographic texture, tailor and form isotropic ZTE, and simultaneously enhance the strength and toughness of the alloy. These findings suggest a promising design paradigm for comprehensive performance ZTE alloys.
