Effects of a composite flame retardant system on the flame retardancy and mechanical performance of epoxy resin adhesive

Abstract A flame‐retarded epoxy resin (ER) adhesive with strong flame retardancy and adhesion performance was prepared. The coated ammonium polyphosphate (MFAPP), melamine (MEL), and organic montmorillonite (OMMT) were mixed to prepare a composite flame retardant. It was subsequently blended with a toughened ER thoroughly and then the mixture was cured with polyamide. The resultant ER adhesive thermosets achieved UL‐94 V‐0 rating during vertical burning test, and the limiting oxygen index value was as high as 31.6%. The shear strength of the ER adhesive was 27.9 MPa when 25 wt% MFAPP/MEL/OMMT was introduced. Compared with the pure adhesive, the flame retardant epoxy adhesive maintained outstanding adhesion performance because of the good compatibility between the composite flame retardant additives and the toughened ER adhesive. Cone calorimetry tests indicated that the release of heat and smoke were obviously declined with the incorporation of the composite flame retardant system in comparison to pure ER adhesive thermoset. The investigation of flame retardant mechanism revealed that the composite MFAPP/MEL/OMMT flame retardant system stimulated the generation of highly expanded, integral, and strong char layer and the formed char layer exerted superior insulation effect during combusiton. The present work provided an alternative approach to prepare flame retardant ER adhesive with the similar excellent adhesive performance.

Memory effect and phase transition in a hierarchical trap model for spin glasses

Here, we introduce an efficient dynamical tree method that enables us to explicitly demonstrate the thermoremanent magnetization memory effect in a hierarchical energy landscape. Our simulation nicely reproduces the nontrivial waiting-time and waiting-temperature dependences in this nonequilibrium phenomenon. We further investigate the condensation effect, in which a small set of microstates dominates the thermodynamic behavior in the multilayer trap model. Importantly, a structural phase transition of the multilayer tree model is shown to coincide with the onset of the condensation phenomenon. Our results underscore the importance of hierarchical structure and demonstrate the intimate relation between the glassy behavior and structure of barrier trees.

Temporally decoherent and spatially coherent vibrations in metal halide perovskites

The long carrier lifetime and defect tolerance in metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are major contributors to the superb performance of MHP optoelectronic devices. Large polarons were reported to be responsible for the long carrier lifetime. Yet microscopic mechanisms of the large polaron formation, including the so-called phonon melting, are still under debate. In this study, time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering experiments and first-principles density-functional theory calculations were employed to investigate the lattice vibrations (or phonon dynamics) in methylammonium lead iodide, a prototypical example of MHPs. Our findings are that optical phonons lose temporal coherence gradually with increasing temperature which vanishes at the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal structural phase transition. Surprisingly, however, we found that the spatial coherence is still retained throughout the decoherence process. We argue that the temporally decoherent and spatially coherent vibrations contribute to the formation of large polarons in this metal halide perovskite.

Crystal structures and rotational dynamics of a two-dimensional metal halide perovskite (OA) 2 PbI 4

The extended charge carrier lifetime in metal halide perovskites is responsible for their excellent optoelectronic properties. Recent studies indicate that the superb device performance in these materials is intimately related to the organic cation dynamics. Here, we focus on the investigation of the two-dimensional hybrid perovskite, (C 8 H 17 NH 3 ) 2 PbI 4 (henceforth, OA + = C 8 H 17 NH 3 + ). Using elastic and quasielastic neutron scattering techniques and group theoretical analysis, we studied the structural phase transitions and rotational modes of the C 8 H 17 NH 3 + cation in (OA) 2 PbI 4 . Here, our results show that, in the high-temperature orthorhombic ( T > 310 K) phase, the OA + cation exhibits a combination of a twofold rotation of the NH 3 –CH 2 head group about the crystal c -axis with a characteristic relaxation time of ~6.2 ps, threefold rotations (C 3 ) of NH 3 and CH 3 terminal groups, and slow librations of the other atoms. Contrastingly, only the C 3 rotation is present in the intermediate-temperature orthorhombic (238 K < T < 310 K) and low-temperature monoclinic ( T < 238 K) phases.
