Linear simulation of kinetic electromagnetic instabilities in a tokamak plasma with weak magnetic shear

Gyrokinetic simulation and eigenvalue calculation of electromagnetic instabilities are carried out for an experimentally observed low-n mode in weak magnetic shear discharge. With different magnetic shear values, the Gyrokinetic Toroidal Code simulation of the ion temperature gradient mode is consistent with the eigenvalue code (HD7) calculation. Due to the sensitivity of the kinetic ballooning mode (KBM) to global equilibrium, the simulation of the KBM deviates from the eigenvalue results, for the ballooning representation used in HD7 satisfies its spatial scale separations. Under a flat safety factor profile, the KBM is more unstable and its mode structure tends to move with the peak of the ion temperature drive. Further simulation of the KBM in an HL-2A-like equilibrium shows that the β excitation threshold of the mode is lower than 0.2% and the dominant toroidal mode number is n = 4, which is consistent with the measured experimental spectrum.

Facile Fabrication of Self‐Assembly Functionalized Polythiophene Hole Transporting Layer for High Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract Crystallinity and crystal orientation have a predominant impact on a materials’ semiconducting properties, thus it is essential to manipulate the microstructure arrangements for desired semiconducting device performance. Here, ultra‐uniform hole‐transporting material (HTM) by self‐assembling COOH‐functionalized P3HT (P3HT‐COOH) is fabricated, on which near single crystal quality perovskite thin film can be grown. In particular, the self‐assembly approach facilitates the P3HT‐COOH molecules to form an ordered and homogeneous monolayer on top of the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode facilitate the perovskite crystalline film growth with high quality and preferred orientations. After detailed spectroscopy and device characterizations, it is found that the carboxylic acid anchoring groups can down‐shift the work function and passivate the ITO surface, retarding the interface carrier recombination. As a result, the device made with the self‐assembled HTM show high open‐circuit voltage over 1.10 V and extend the lifetime over 4,300 h when storing at 30% relative humidity. Moreover, the cell works efficiently under much reduced light power, making it useful as power source under dim‐light conditions. The demonstration suggests a new facile way of fabricating monolayer HTM for high efficiency perovskite devices, as well as the interconnecting layer needed for tandem cell.

Opportunities of Aqueous Manganese-Based Batteries with Deposition and Stripping Chemistry

Rechargeable aqueous manganese-based batteries have been attracting significant attention owing to their advantages of low cost, high safety, and ease of manufacturing, which are promising attributes for grid-scale energy storage applications. However, most traditional manganese-based batteries with solid-state conversion and intercalation reactions suffer from low capacity and poor long-term cycling stability. The recent novel storage mechanism based on cathode Mn 2+ /MnO 2 deposition/stripping chemistry has fundamentally tackled these issues, enabling a new generation of manganese-based batteries with superior electrochemical performance. Here, the recent advances in aqueous manganese-based batteries with the Mn 2+ /MnO 2 deposition/stripping chemistry are reviewed. Furthermore, a summary of the development of manganese-based batteries with different storage mechanisms is provided and new opportunities for the emerging Mn 2+ /MnO 2 chemistry in the latest generation are highlighted. Then, the current understanding of the Mn 2+ /MnO 2 charge storage mechanism and its potential in manganese-based batteries for large-scale energy storage applications is presented. Moreover, insights into opportunities and future directions for manganese-based batteries with the Mn 2+ /MnO 2 chemistry are proposed.

Stochastic nonlinear analysis of unidirectional fiber composites using image-based microstructural uncertainty quantification

Here, we present a data-driven nonlinear uncertainty quantification and propagation framework to study the microstructure-induced stochastic performance of unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. The proposed approach integrates (1) microscopic image characterization, (2) stochastic microstructure reconstruction, and (3) efficient multiscale finite element simulations enabled by self-consistent clustering (SCA) analysis. To model the complex microstructural variability, the proposed UQ methods take the non-Gaussian uncertainty sources into account through a distribution-free sampling approach leveraging nonparametric and asymptotic statistical tools. A hierarchical conditional sampling strategy enables the simultaneous sampling of multiple sources of uncertainties. Our approach provides insights into the impact of microstructural variabilities, which are shown to have an increasing impact on the nonlinear responses of UD CFRP parts under progressive compression loading and ultimately on the failure rate over time. We discover that before CFRP parts start to fail, a characteristic time period emerges with distinctive uncertainty distributions specific to the microstructure variability and the probability of failure. Identifying the failure time period is crucial to the reliability prediction, which is an essential component of CFRP design.

Restorable Neutralization of Poly(acrylic acid) Binders toward Balanced Processing Properties and Cycling Performance for Silicon Anodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Neutralization of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-based binders using lithium hydroxide is a common strategy for fabricating silicon anode laminates, which improves rheological properties of slurries toward high-quality electrode laminates. However, the significantly increased basicity causes degradation of Si particles while the irreversible conversion of carboxylic acid groups to lithium carboxylates undermines the binding strength, collectively leading to adverse cycling performance of the fabricated Si anodes. Herein, a novel neutralization process for PAA binders is developed. A weak base, ammonia (NH 3 ), was discovered as a neutralizing agent that still promotes rheological response of binder solutions but results in a reduced pH increase. Interestingly, the resulting ammonium carboxylate groups may cleave during the drying process to restore the neutralized PAA (PAA-NH 3 ) binders to their pristine states. The best-performing composition of 50% neutralization (PAA-50%NH 3 ) provides comparable rheological response as a PAA-Li binder as well as much improved cycling performance. Additionally, the half-cells using the PAA-50%NH 3 binder can deliver 60% capacity retention over 100 cycles at C/3 rate, affording a 23.8% increase compared to PAA-Li half-cells. This restorable neutralization process of PAA binders represents an innovative strategy of mitigating issues from slurry processing of Si particles to achieve concurrent improvements in high-quality lamination and cycling performance.

The effect of jet-induced medium excitation on Λ/ k 0 s in jet in Pb-Pb collisions

In this work, we use CoLBT-hydro model for simultaneous event-by-event simulations of jet propagation and hydrodynamics evolution of the bulk medium including jet-induced medium excitation. The final reconstructed jet in heavy-ion collision include not only hadrons from medium response for the deposited energy and momentum of hard partons, but also hadrons from the fragmentation and recombination process of in-medium hard partons. We carry out the study with CoLBT-hydro of medium modification of the Λ/ k 0 s in jet in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=2.76TeV. We qualitatively describe the enhancement of the Λ/ k 0 s ratio in jet in the intermediate pT region due to the contribution from jet-induced medium flow.

Partial-Single-Atom, Partial-Nanoparticle Composites Enhance Water Dissociation for Hydrogen Evolution

The development of an efficient electrocatalyst toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of significant importance in transforming renewable electricity to pure and clean hydrogen by water splitting. However, the construction of an active electrocatalyst with multiple sites that can promote the dissociation of water molecules still remains a great challenge. Herein, a partial-single-atom, partial-nanoparticle composite consisting of nanosized ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles (NPs) and individual Ru atoms as an energy-efficient HER catalyst in alkaline medium is reported. The formation of this unique composite mainly results from the dispersion of Ru NPs to small-size NPs and single atoms (SAs) on the Fe/N codoped carbon (Fe–N–C) substrate due to the thermodynamic stability. The optimal catalyst exhibits an outstanding HER activity with an ultralow overpotential (9 mV) at 10 mA cm -2 (η 10 ), a high turnover frequency (8.9 H 2 s -1 at 50 mV overpotential), and nearly 100% Faraday efficiency, outperforming the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C and other reported HER electrocatalysts in alkaline condition. Both experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that the coexistence of Ru NPs and SAs can improve the hydride coupling and water dissociation kinetics, thus synergistically enhancing alkaline hydrogen evolution performance.

Confinement Effects on Furfuryl Alcohol Reactions over Porous Bilayer Silica-Modified Pd(111)

In recent years, hexagonally ordered silica bilayer films have been successfully grown and characterized on metal substrates. To investigate how confinement effects from the silica films can influence catalytic reactions, we studied the reaction of furfuryl alcohol on a Pd(111) surface modified with a ~4 Å thick silica bilayer film [BL-silica/Pd(111)] containing micro- and mesopores. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) experiments showed that BL-silica/Pd(111) catalyzed similar reactions to those catalyzed by bare Pd(111); however, the products desorbed at higher temperatures in the presence of the film. In addition, hydrogenation of trapped C3HX fragments at high temperature was detected on BL-silica/Pd(111), which resulted in propane production. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the BL-silica film weakened adsorption of reaction intermediates, including atomic hydrogen, on the Pd surface. The overall effect of the film opens the possibility of selectively hydrogenating multifunctional molecules, with significantly higher selectivity than on the bare Pd(111) surface.

Featureless adaptive optimization accelerates functional electronic materials design

Electronic materials that exhibit phase transitions between metastable states (e.g., metal-insulator transition materials with abrupt electrical resistivity transformations) are challenging to decode. For these materials, conventional machine learning methods display limited predictive capability due to data scarcity and the absence of features that impede model training. In this article, we demonstrate a discovery strategy based on multi-objective Bayesian optimization to directly circumvent these bottlenecks by utilizing latent variable Gaussian processes combined with high-fidelity electronic structure calculations for validation in the chalcogenide lacunar spinel family. We directly and simultaneously learn phase stability and bandgap tunability from chemical composition alone to efficiently discover all superior compositions on the design Pareto front. Previously unidentified electronic transitions also emerge from our featureless adaptive optimization engine. Our methodology readily generalizes to optimization of multiple properties, enabling co-design of complex multifunctional materials, especially where prior data is sparse.

Lattice-Distortion-Enhanced Yield Strength in a Refractory High-Entropy Alloy

Severe distortion is one of the four core effects in single-phase high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and contributes significantly to the yield strength. However, the connection between the atomic-scale lattice distortion and macro-scale mechanical properties through experimental verification has yet to be fully achieved, owing to two critical challenges: 1) the difficulty in the development of homogeneous single-phase solid-solution HEAs and 2) the ambiguity in describing the lattice distortion and related measurements and calculations. Here, a single-phase body-centered-cubic (BCC) refractory HEA, NbTaTiVZr, using thermodynamic modeling coupled with experimental verifications, is developed. Compared to the previously developed single-phase NbTaTiV HEA, the NbTaTiVZr HEA shows a higher yield strength and comparable plasticity. The increase in yield strength is systematically and quantitatively studied in terms of lattice distortion using a theoretical model, first-principles calculations, synchrotron X-ray/neutron diffraction, atom-probe tomography, and scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques. These results demonstrate that severe lattice distortion is a core factor for developing high strengths in refractory HEAs.

Evaluation of radiation hardness of High-Voltage silicon vertical JFETs

In the future ATLAS Inner Tracker, each silicon strip module will be equipped with a switch able to separate the high voltage supply from the sensor in case the latter becomes faulty. The switch, placed in between the HV supply and the sensor, needs to sustain a high voltage in its OFF state, to offer a low resistance path for the sensor leakage current in the ON state, and be radiation hard up to 1.2 * 10 15 neq/cm 2 along with other requirements. While GaN JFETs have been selected as suitable rad-hard switch, a silicon vertical HV-JFET was developed by Brookhaven National Laboratory as an alternative option. Pre-irradiation results showed the functionality of the device and proved that the silicon HV-JFET satisfied the pre-irradiation requirements for the switch. To assess its suitability after irradiation, a few p-type HV-JFETs have been neutron irradiated at Jozef Stefan Institute (JSI, Ljubljana, Slovenia). Overall, this paper reports the static characterization of these irradiated devices and the TCAD numerical simulations used to get an insight of the physics governing the post-irradiation behaviour.
