Nondissipative Martensitic Phase Transformation after Multimillion Superelastic Cycles

Superelastic alloys used for stents, biomedical implants, and solid-state cooling devices rely on their reversible stress-induced martensitic transformations. These applications require the alloy to sustain high deformability over millions of cycles without failure. Here, we report an alloy capable of enduring 10 × 10 7 tensile stress-induced phase transformations while still exhibiting over 2% recoverable elastic strains. After millions of cycles, the alloy is highly reversible with zero stress hysteresis. We show that the major martensite variant is reversible even after multimillions of cycles under tensile loadings with a highly coherent $(1\bar{1}0)_A$ interface. Finally, this discovery provides new insights into martensitic transformation, and may guide the development of superelastic alloys for multimillion cycling applications.

Energy Conversion from Heat to Electricity by Highly Reversible Phase-Transforming Ferroelectrics

The search for performant multiferroic materials has attracted general research interest in energy science as they have been increasingly exploited as the conversion media among thermal, electric, magnetic, and mechanical energies by using their temperature-dependent ferroic properties. Here we report a material development strategy that guides us to discover a reversible phase-transforming ferroelectric material exhibiting enduring energy harvesting from small temperature differences. The material satisfies the crystallographic compatibility condition between polar and nonpolar phases, which shows only 2.5°C thermal hysteresis and a high figure of merit. It stably generates 15μA of electricity in consecutive thermodynamic cycles in the absence of any bias fields. We demonstrate our device to consistently generate 6μA/cm 2 current density near 100°C over 540 complete phase transformation cycles without any electric and functional degradation. The energy-conversion device can light up an LED directly without attaching an external power source. Furthermore, this promising material candidate brings the low-grade waste-heat harvesting closer to a practical realization, e.g., small temperature fluctuations around the water boiling point can be considered as a clean energy source.

Integrated Proteomic and Glycoproteomic Characterization of Human High-Grade Serous Ovarian Carcinoma

Many gene products exhibit great structural heterogeneity because of an array of modifications. These modifications are not directly encoded in the genomic template but often affect the functionality of proteins. Protein glycosylation plays a vital role in proper protein functions. However, the analysis of glycoproteins has been challenging compared with other protein modifications, such as phosphorylation. Here, we perform an integrated proteomic and glycoproteomic analysis of 83 prospectively collected high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSC) and 23 non-tumor tissues. Integration of the expression data from global proteomics and glycoproteomics reveals tumor-specific glycosylation, uncovers different glycosylation associated with three tumor clusters, and identifies glycosylation enzymes that were correlated with the altered glycosylation. In addition to providing a valuable resource, these results provide insights into the potentialroles of glycosylation in the pathogenesis of HGSC, with the possibility of distinguishing pathological outcomes of ovarian tumors from non-tumors, as well as classifying tumor clusters.

Derived crystal structure of martensitic materials by solid–solid phase transformation

A mathematical description of crystal structure is proposed consisting of two parts: the underlying translational periodicity and the distinct atomic positions up to the symmetry operations in the unit cell, consistent with the International Tables for Crystallography. By the Cauchy–Born hypothesis, such a description can be integrated with the theory of continuum mechanics to calculate a derived crystal structure produced by solid–solid phase transformation. In addition, the expressions for the orientation relationship between the parent lattice and the derived lattice are generalized. Additionally, the derived structure rationalizes the lattice parameters and the general equivalent atomic positions that assist the indexing process of X-ray diffraction analysis for low-symmetry martensitic materials undergoing phase transformation. The analysis is demonstrated in a CuAlMn shape memory alloy. From its austenite phase (L2 1 face-centered cubic structure), it is identified that the derived martensitic structure has orthorhombic symmetry Pmmn with the derived lattice parameters a d = 4.36491, b d = 5.40865 and c d = 4.2402 Å, by which the complicated X-ray Laue diffraction pattern can be well indexed, and the orientation relationship can be verified.

Tailoring conductive networks within hollow carbon nanospheres to host phosphorus for advanced sodium ion batteries

The formidable sustainability challenges in advancing energy storage technologies call for game-changing research in battery designs. The previous pursuing of novel cathode materials with high redox potentials impedes the vast applications due to the simultaneous electrolyte decomposition at high potentials, though they are expected to deliver high specific capacities. Eventually, people start thinking in an opposite way, desirable anode materials with low redox potentials can also own high specific capacities. Among all the promising candidates, phosphorus-based anodes in sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have received considerable attention owing to the low cost and relatively high natural abundance of phosphorus. More importantly, phosphorus can store three sodium atoms and enable a high theoretical capacity of 2596 mAh g -1 , which overwhelms any other SIB anode currently available. However, the poor electronic conductivity and large volume change of phosphorus during cycling severely deteriorate battery performance. The most widely used strategy is to confine phosphorus within well-designed carbon hosts. Here, we thereby introduce a new type of porous hollow carbon with conductive-network interior as phosphorus host, which not only improves the electrical conductivity, but also creates enough interior surface for maximizing phosphorus utilization and shortening the ion's diffusion distance, compared to those conventional hollow carbon hosts. Therefore, the as-prepared red phosphorus-carbon spheres composites (RP/CS) exhibit superior rate performance (similar to 1083 mAh g -1 at 4 A g -1 , similar to 837 mAh g -1 even at 8 A g -1 ) and excellent cycle life (1027 mAh g -1 at 4 A g -1 more than 2000 cycles).
