THz generation by exchange-coupled spintronic emitters

Abstract The mechanism of THz generation in ferromagnet/metal (F/M) bilayers has been typically ascribed to the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). Here, we fabricated Pt/Fe/Cr/Fe/Pt multilayers containing two back-to-back spintronic THz emitters separated by a thin ( t Cr ≤ 3nm) wedge-shaped Cr spacer. In such an arrangement, magnetization alignment of the two Fe films can be controlled by the interplay between Cr-mediated interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) and an external magnetic field. This in turn results in a strong variation of the THz amplitude A , with A ↑ ↓ reaching up to 14 times A ↑ ↑ (arrows indicate the relative alignment of the magnetization of the two magnetic layers). This observed functionality is ascribed to the interference of THz transients generated by two closely spaced THz emitters. Moreover, the magnetic field dependence A ( H ) shows a strong asymmetry that points to an additional performance modulation of the THz emitter via IEC and multilayer design.

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy imaging of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma tissues

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) ranks among the malignancies with the highest fatality and morbidity rates. This is predominantly attributable to an absence of understanding the intricate and diverse microenvironment of the tumor. We use terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) imaging in transmission geometry to probe ex-vivo the heterogenous microenvironment of the genetically modified murine PDAC tissue that closely resembles the PDAC heterogeneity in human malignancy. We introduced a maximum a-posteriori probability estimation algorithm to objectively the tumor’s heterogenous microenvironment using the average values of refractive index and absorption coefficient within the useable terahertz bandwidth as imaging markers. Furthermore, direct comparison of stained histopathologic images and the refractive index and the absorption coefficient high-resolution, two dimensional maps of the same PDAC samples confirms the high potential of the THz-TDS method for tumor tissue characterization.

High-Density Polyethylene Custom Focusing Lenses for High-Resolution Transient Terahertz Biomedical Imaging Sensors

Transient terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) imaging has emerged as a novel non-ionizing and noninvasive biomedical imaging modality, designed for the detection and characterization of a variety of tissue malignancies due to their high signal-to-noise ratio and submillimeter resolution. We report our design of a pair of aspheric focusing lenses using a commercially available lens-design software that resulted in about 200 × 200-μm2 focal spot size corresponding to the 1-THz frequency. The lenses are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) obtained using a lathe fabrication and are integrated into a THz-TDS system that includes low-temperature GaAs photoconductive antennae as both a THz emitter and detector. The system is used to generate high-resolution, two-dimensional (2D) images of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded murine pancreas tissue blocks. The performance of these focusing lenses is compared to the older system based on a pair of short-focal-length, hemispherical polytetrafluoroethylene (TeflonTM) lenses and is characterized using THz-domain measurements, resulting in 2D maps of the tissue refractive index and absorption coefficient as imaging markers. For a quantitative evaluation of the lens effect on the image resolution, we formulated a lateral resolution parameter, R2080, defined as the distance required for a 20–80% transition of the imaging marker from the bare paraffin region to the tissue region in the same image frame. The R2080 parameter clearly demonstrates the advantage of the HDPE lenses over TeflonTM lenses. The lens-design approach presented here can be successfully implemented in other THz-TDS setups with known THz emitter and detector specifications.

A Pro-Regenerative Supramolecular Prodrug Protects Against and Repairs Colon Damage in Experimental Colitis

Structural repair of the intestinal epithelium is strongly correlated with disease remission in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); however, ulcer healing is not addressed by existing therapies. To address this need, this study reports the use of a small molecule prolyl hydroxylase (PHD) inhibitor (DPCA) to upregulate hypoxia-inducible factor one-alpha (HIF-1α) and induce mammalian regeneration. Sustained delivery of DPCA is achieved through subcutaneous injections of a supramolecular hydrogel, formed through the self-assembly of PEG-DPCA conjugates. Pre-treatment of mice with PEG-DPCA is shown to protect mice from epithelial erosion and symptoms of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis. Surprisingly, a single subcutaneous dose of PEG-DPCA, administered after disease onset, leads to accelerated weight gain and complete restoration of healthy tissue architecture in colitic mice. Rapid DPCA-induced restoration of the intestinal barrier is likely orchestrated by increased expression of HIF-1α and associated targets leading to an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Further investigation of DPCA as a potential adjunctive or stand-alone restorative treatment to combat active IBD is warranted.

Terahertz inverse spin Hall effect in spintronic nanostructures with various ferromagnetic materials

Bilayers of ferromagnetic and heavy metal nanolayers excited with femtosecond laser pulses emit subpicosecond bursts of electromagnetic radiation with spectral frequencies up to several THz. We fabricated such spintronic THz emitters containing various ferromagnetic materials with vastly different magnetic remanence, saturation magnetization, and coercive fields. In all cases, the THz amplitude versus magnetic-field dependence follows the independently measured magnetization hysteresis loops and the THz polarization direction is perpendicular to the sample’s magnetization M, both consistent with the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) as the physical origin. The mV-level signals of observed THz transient also favor the ISHE over the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE). The M(T) variation governs the temperature dependence of the THz generation. Emitters with weakly remanent ferromagnets are magnetic-field tunable, while moderately and strongly remanent ferromagnets, once magnetized, allow intense THz generation even without an external field, nevertheless exhibiting low susceptibility to magnetic perturbations if the hysteresis loop is square. Hence, exploiting the magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic layer enables tailoring of weakly temperature-dependent spintronic THz emitters. Finally, we explored the applicability of perovskite oxide materials such as La-Sr-Mn-O (LSMO) for THz transient generation. We detected weak (<40-μV amplitude) THz emissions from both LSMO/Au and pure LSMO nanostructures with no sign flip upon the sample reversal. Furthermore, we excluded the ISHE and believe it was likely governed by the ANE in the thick-film regime, although we cannot exclude the transient demagnetization mechanism.

Determination of Thermal Damage Threshold in THz Photomixers Using Raman Spectroscopy

The increase of device lifetime and reliability of THz photomixers will play an essential role in their possible future application. Therefore, their optimal work conditions/operation range, i.e., the maximal incident optical power should be experimentally estimated. We fabricated and tested THz photomixer devices based on nitrogen-implanted GaAs integrated with a Bragg reflector. Raman spectroscopy was applied to investigate the material properties and to disclose any reversible or irreversible material changes. The results indicate that degradation effects in the photomixer structures/material could be avoided if the total optical power density does not exceed levels of about 0.7 mW/µm 2 for 100 min of operation. Furthermore, the investigations performed during 1000 min of optical exposure on the photomixer devices’ central region comprising interdigitated metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) structures suggest a reversible “curing” mechanism if the power density level of ~0.58 mW/µm 2 is not exceeded. Long-term operation (up to 1000 h) reveals that the photomixer structures can withstand an average optical power density of up to ~0.4 mW/µm 2 without degradation when biased at 10 V. Besides the decrease of the position of the A1g (LO) Raman mode from ~291 cm -1 down to ~288 cm -1 with increasing optical power density and operation time, broad Raman modes evolve at about 210 cm -1 , which can be attributed to degradation effects in the active photomixer/MSM area. In addition, the performed carrier lifetime and photomixer experiments demonstrated that these structures generated continuous wave sub-THz radiation efficiently as long as their optimal work conditions/operation range were within the limits established by our Raman studies.

Cadmium Magnesium Telluride for Next-Generation X-Ray Free Electron Laser, Synchrotron, and Many Other Applications

We developed a picosecond photodetector based on our Bridgman-grown and specially engineered cadmium magnesium telluride (Cd 1–x MgxTe) single crystal that is sensitive to both optical and X-ray pulses for coarse timing in free-electron laser applications. Cd 1–x MgxTe is a widebandgap semiconductor with potential applications, not only in optoelectronics, but also in particle physics as an intense pulse radiation detector for bremsstrahlung, X-ray/gamma-ray radiation, thermal neutrons, and medical imaging. For femtosecond optical and X-ray crosscorrelation, the material must have a very short lifetime, a condition that is opposite to that required for nuclear spectroscopy applications. At the same time, the material also needs to have a very low bulk leakage current, in the 10–90 nA range for voltages to even 1000 V. Hence, the ability to tailor or engineer the material is very crucial. Picosecond response and the crystal growth of this specially engineered Cd 1–x MgxTe material are presented. Furthermore, other characterization and transient measurements are discussed along with room-temperature semiconductor detector performance for other nuclear radiation detection applications.

The influence of molecular design on structure–property relationships of a supramolecular polymer prodrug

Supramolecular self-assemblies of hydrophilic macromolecules functionalized with hydrophobic, structure-directing components have long been used for drug delivery. In these systems, loading of poorly soluble compounds is typically achieved through physical encapsulation during or after formation of the supramolecular assembly, resulting in low encapsulation efficiencies and limited control over release kinetics, which are predominately governed by diffusion and carrier degradation. To overcome these limitations, amphiphilic prodrugs that leverage a hydrophobic drug as both the therapeutic and structure-directing component can be used to create supramolecular materials with higher loading and controlled-release kinetics using biodegradable or enzymatically cleavable linkers. Here, we report the design, synthesis, and characterization of a library of supramolecular polymer prodrugs based on poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and the proregenerative drug 1,4-dihydrophenonthrolin-4-one-3-carboxylic acid (DPCA). Structure–property relationships were elucidated through experimental characterization of prodrug behavior in both the wet and dry states using scattering techniques and electron microscopy and corroborated by coarse-grained modeling. Molecular architecture and the hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic ratio of PEG–DPCA conjugates strongly influenced their physical state in water, ranging from fully soluble to supramolecular spherical assemblies and nanofibers. Molecular design and supramolecular structure, in turn, were shown to dramatically alter hydrolytic and enzymatic release and cellular transport of DPCA. In addition to potentially expanding therapeutic options for DPCA through control of supramolecular assemblies, the design principles elaborated here may inform the development of other supramolecular prodrugs based on hydrophobic small-molecule compounds.

Ultraefficient resistance switching between charge ordered phases in 1 T -TaS 2 with a single picosecond electrical pulse

Progress in high-performance computing demands significant advances in memory technology. Among novel memory technologies that promise efficient device operation on a sub-ns timescale, resistance switching between charge ordered phases of 1T-TaS 2 has shown to be potentially useful for development of high-speed, energy efficient nonvolatile memory devices. Measurement of the electrical operation of such devices in the picosecond regime is technically challenging and hitherto still largely unexplored. Here, we use an optoelectronic “laboratory-on-a-chip” experiment for measurement of ultrafast memory switching, enabling accurate measurement of electrical switching parameters with 100 fs temporal resolution. Photoexcitation and electro-optic sampling on a (Cd,Mn)Te substrate are used to generate and, subsequently, measure electrical pulse propagation with intra-band excitation and sub-gap probing, respectively. We demonstrate high contrast nonvolatile resistance switching from high to low resistance states of a 1T-TaS 2 device using single sub-2ps electrical pulses. Using detailed modeling, we find that the switching energy density per unit area is exceptionally small, E A =9.4 fJ/μm 2 . Finally, the speed and energy efficiency of an electronic “write” process place the 1T-TaS 2 devices into a category of their own among new generation nonvolatile memory devices.

Role of climate goals and clean-air policies on reducing future air pollution deaths in China: a modelling study

Over 3 million people still die every year from diseases caused by exposure to outdoor PM 2.5 air pollution, and more than a quarter of these premature deaths occur in China. In addition to clean air policies that target pollution emissions, climate policies aimed at reducing fossil-fuel CO 2 emissions (e.g., to avoid 1.5°C of warming) may also dramatically improve air quality and public health. Yet there has been no comprehensive accounting of public health outcomes under different energy pathways and local clean air management decisions in China. In particular, further research is needed to understand the relationships among climate and clean air polices and future health burdens in China, where an aging population will further exacerbate the impacts of air pollution. Using a China-focused integrated assessment model (GCAM-China) and a dynamic emission projection model (DPEC), we project future Chinese air quality in scenarios spanning a range of global climate targets (i.e. 1.5°0C, 2°C, NDC, unambitious, baseline, and 4.5°C) as well as national clean air actions (i.e. 2015-pollution, current-pollution, and ambitious-pollution). We then evaluate the health impacts of PM2·5 air pollution of scenario matrix using the chemical transport model WRF-CMAQ and the latest epidemiological concentration–response (C-R) functions (i.e. GBD2019). We find that, without ambitious climate mitigation (e.g., under current NDC pledges), Chinese deaths related the PM2.5 air pollution do not substantially decrease—and often grow—by mid-century, regardless of clean air policies and air quality improvements. For example, in scenarios that track China’s current NDC pledge and deploy best-available pollution control technologies, PM 2.5 -related deaths in China decrease slightly by 2030 (to 1.2 million per year) but no further by mid-century (Ambitious-pollution-NDC-goals; 1.2 million deaths in 2050) despite substantial and continuous improvements in population-weighted air quality (27.2 to 16.0 µg/m 3 from 2030 to 2050). The contrary trends of improving air quality and increasing PM 2·5 -related deaths in many of our scenarios reveals the extent to which extra efforts are needed to compensate for the established fact of increasing age of China’s population in future. Substantial decreases in China’s PM 2.5 -related deaths and age-standardized death rates (e.g., decreasing by 0.3–0.5 million deaths and 10.2–14.2 per 100,000 population age-standardized death rates per year) thus require the sort of large-scale transition in energy sources entailed by scenarios that meet international climate goals to avoid 1.5°C and 2°C of warming (Ambitious-pollution-2°C- and 1.5°C-goals).

Comparison of Current and Future PM2.5 Air Quality in China Under CMIP6 and DPEC Emission Scenarios

The latest scenarios for the sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) provide opportunities to explore future climate and air pollution mitigation pathways with socioeconomic features. However, to what extent inadequate consideration of region-specific policies in the CMIP6 scenarios would affect regional air quality projections is still not clear. Here, we simulated China’s future PM2.5 concentrations and compositions with local policy-based scenarios and the original CMIP6 datasets, for the first time estimating future air quality differences induced by the lack of local pollution control policies in the CMIP6 scenarios. We found that the CMIP6-driven projections overestimate major chemical aerosols by 10% – 70% in 2015 and fail to capture the rapid PM2.5 concentration decline during 2015–2019. Near-term differences further lead to 43% – 49% (5 – 9 µg/m3) PM2.5 overpredictions in 2050 in CMIP6 scenarios compared with policy-based mitigation scenarios. Our study demonstrates the indispensable influences of local policies on regional analyses and suggests that the research community should incorporate more region-specific information in future scenario designs.

Pathways of China's PM 2.5 air quality 2015–2060 in the context of carbon neutrality

Clean air policies in China have substantially reduced particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) air pollution in recent years, primarily by curbing end-of-pipe emissions. However, reaching the level of the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines may instead depend upon the air quality co-benefits of ambitious climate action. Here, we assess pathways of Chinese PM 2.5 air quality from 2015 to 2060 under a combination of scenarios that link global and Chinese climate mitigation pathways (i.e. global 2°C- and 1.5°C-pathways, National Determined Contributions (NDC) pledges and carbon neutrality goals) to local clean air policies. We find that China can achieve both its near-term climate goals (peak emissions) and PM 2.5 air quality annual standard (35 μg/m3) by 2030 by fulfilling its NDC pledges and continuing air pollution control policies. However, the benefits of end-of-pipe control reductions are mostly exhausted by 2030, and reducing PM 2.5 exposure of the majority of the Chinese population to below 10 μg/m 3 by 2060 will likely require more ambitious climate mitigation efforts such as China's carbon neutrality goals and global 1.5°C-pathways. Our results thus highlight that China's carbon neutrality goals will play a critical role in reducing air pollution exposure to the level of the WHO guidelines and protecting public health.

Molecular design principles of Lysine-DOPA wet adhesion

The mussel byssus has long been a source of inspiration for the adhesion community. Recently, adhesive synergy between flanking lysine (Lys, K) and 3,4-Dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA, Y ) residues in the mussel foot proteins (Mfps) has been highlighted. However, the complex topological relationship of DOPA and Lys as well as the interfacial adhesive roles of other amino acids have been understudied. Herein, we study adhesion of Lys and DOPA-containing peptides to organic and inorganic substrates using single-molecule force spectroscopy (SMFS). We show that a modest increase in peptide length, from K Y to (K Y ) 3 , increases adhesion strength to TiO 2. Surprisingly, further increase in peptide length offers no additional benefit. Additionally, comparison of adhesion of dipeptides containing Lys and either DOPA (K Y ) or phenylalanine (KF) shows that DOPA is stronger and more versatile. We furthermore demonstrate that incorporating a nonadhesive spacer between (K Y ) repeats can mimic the hidden length in the Mfp and act as an effective strategy to dissipate energy.

Dynamic projection of anthropogenic emissions in China: methodology and 2015–2050 emission pathways under a range of socio-economic, climate policy, and pollution control scenarios

Abstract. Future trends in air pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions for China are of great concern to the community. A set of globalscenarios regarding future socio-economic and climate developments, combiningshared socio-economic pathways (SSPs) with climate forcing outcomes asdescribed by the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), was createdby the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Chinese researchers have also developed various emission scenarios by considering detailed local environmental and climate policies. However, a comprehensive scenario set connecting SSP–RCP scenarios with local policies and representing dynamic emission changes under local policies is still missing. In this work, to fill this gap, we developed a dynamic projection model, the Dynamic Projection model for Emissions in China (DPEC), to explore China'sfuture anthropogenic emission pathways. The DPEC is designed tointegrate the energy system model, emission inventory model, dynamicprojection model, and parameterized scheme of Chinese policies. The modelcontains two main modules, an energy-model-driven activity rate projectionmodule and a sector-based emission projection module. The activity rateprojection module provides the standardized and unified future energyscenarios after reorganizing and refining the outputs from the energy systemmodel. Here we use a new China-focused version of the Global ChangeAssessment Model (GCAM-China) to project future energy demand and supply inChina under different SSP–RCP scenarios at the provincial level. Theemission projection module links a bottom-up emission inventory model, theMulti-resolution Emission Inventory for China (MEIC), to GCAM-China andaccurately tracks the evolution of future combustion and production technologiesand control measures under different environmental policies. We developedtechnology-based turnover models for several key emitting sectors (e.g.coal-fired power plants, key industries, and on-road transportationsectors), which can simulate the dynamic changes in the unit/vehicle fleetturnover process by tracking the lifespan of each unit/vehicle on an annualbasis. With the integrated modelling framework, we connected five SSP scenarios(SSP1–5), five RCP scenarios (RCP8.5, 7.0, 6.0, 4.5, and 2.6), and threepollution control scenarios (business as usual, BAU; enhanced controlpolicy, ECP; and best health effect, BHE) to produce six combined emissionscenarios. With those scenarios, we presented a wide range of China's futureemissions to 2050 under different development and policy pathways. We foundthat, with a combination of strong low-carbon policy and air pollutioncontrol policy (i.e. SSP1-26-BHE scenario), emissions of major airpollutants (i.e. SO 2 , NO x , PM 2.5 , and non-methane volatile organic compounds – NMVOCs) in China willbe reduced by 34%–66% in 2030 and 58%–87% in 2050 compared to 2015. End-of-pipe control measures are more effective for reducing air pollutant emissions before 2030, while low-carbon policy will play a more important rolein continuous emission reduction until 2050. In contrast, China's emissionswill remain at a high level until 2050 under a reference scenario without activeactions (i.e. SSP3-70-BAU). Compared to similar scenarios set from theCMIP6 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6), our estimates ofemission ranges are much lower than the estimates from the harmonized CMIP6 emissions dataset in2020–2030, but their emission ranges become similar in the year 2050.
