Unlocking Electrostrain in Plastically Deformed Barium Titanate

Achieving substantial electrostrain alongside a large effective piezoelectric strain coefficient (d 33 *) in piezoelectric materials remains a formidable challenge for advanced actuator applications. Here, in this work, a straightforward approach to enhance these properties by strategically designing the domain structure and controlling the domain switching through the introduction of arrays of ordered {100}<100> dislocations is proposed. This dislocation engineering yields an intrinsic lock-in steady–state electrostrain of 0.69% at a low field of 10 kV cm -1 without external stress and an output strain energy density of 5.24 J cm -3 in single-crystal BaTiO 3 , outperforming the benchmark piezoceramics and relaxor ferroelectric single-crystals. Additionally, applying a compression stress of 6 MPa fully unlocks electrostrains exceeding 1%, yielding a remarkable d 33 * value over 10 000 pm V -1 and achieving a record-high strain energy density of 11.67 J cm -3 . Optical and transmission electron microscopy, paired with laboratory and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, is employed to rationalize the observed electrostrain. Phase-field simulations further elucidate the impact of charged dislocations on domain nucleation and domain switching. These findings present an effective and sustainable strategy for developing high-performance, lead-free piezoelectric materials without the need for additional chemical elements, offering immense potential for actuator technologies.

Elastic Resource Management for Deep Learning Applications in a Container Cluster

The increasing demand for learning from massive datasets is restructuring our economy. Effective learning, however, involves nontrivial computing resources. Most businesses utilize commercial infrastructure providers (e.g., AWS) to host their computing clusters in the cloud, where various jobs compete for available resources. While cloud resource management is a fruitful research field that has made many advances in production, such as Kubernetes and YARN, few efforts have been invested to further optimize the system performance, especially for deep learning (DL) training jobs in a container cluster. This work introduces FlowCon, a system that is able to monitor the individual evaluation functions of DL jobs at runtime, and thus to make placement decisions on resource allocations elastically. Here, we present a detailed design and implementation of FlowCon and conduct intensive experiments over various DL models. The results demonstrate that FlowCon significantly improves DL job completion time and resource utilization efficiency, compared to default systems. According to the results, FlowCon is able to improve the completion time by up to 68.8% and meanwhile, reduce the makespan by 18.0%, in the presence of various DL job workloads.

The exceedingly strong two-dimensional ferromagnetism in bi-atomic layer SrRuO 3 with a critical conduction transition

In recent years, few-layer or even monolayer ferromagnetic materials have drawn a great deal of attention due to the promising integration of two-dimensional (2D) magnets into next-generation spintronic devices. The SrRuO 3 monolayer is a rare example of stable 2D magnetism under ambient conditions, but only weak ferromagnetism or antiferromagnetism has been found. The bi-atomic layer SrRuO3 as another environmentally inert 2D magnetic system has been paid less attention heretofore. Here we study both the bi-atomic layer and monolayer SrRuO 3 in (SrRuO 3 ) n /(SrTiO 3 ) m (n = 1, 2) superlattices in which the SrTiO 3 serves as a non-magnetic and insulating space layer. Although the monolayer exhibits arguably weak ferromagnetism, we find that the bi-atomic layer exhibits exceedingly strong ferromagnetism with a T c of 125 K and a saturation magnetization of 1.2 μ B /Ru, demonstrated by both superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry and element-specific X-ray circular dichroism. Moreover, in the bi-atomic layer SrRuO 3 , we demonstrate that random fluctuations and orbital reconstructions inevitably occurring in the 2D limit are critical to the electrical transport, but are much less critical to the ferromagnetism. Our study demonstrates that the bi-atomic layer SrRuO 3 is an exceedingly strong 2D ferromagnetic oxide which has great potentials for applications of ultracompact spintronic devices.

Engineering Magnetic Anisotropy and Emergent Multidirectional Soft Ferromagnetism in Ultrathin Freestanding LaMnO 3 Films

We report the combination of small coercive fields and weak magnetic anisotropy makes soft ferromagnetic films extremely useful for nanoscale devices that need to easily switch spin directions. However, soft ferromagnets are relatively rare, particularly in ultrathin films with thicknesses of a few nanometers or less. We have synthesized large-area, high-quality, ultrathin freestanding LaMnO 3 films on Si and found unexpected soft ferromagnetism along both the in-plane and out-of-plane directions when the film thickness was reduced to 4 nm. We argue that the vanishing magnetic anisotropy between the two directions is a consequence of two coexisting magnetic easy axes in different atomic layers of the LaMnO 3 film. Spectroscopy measurements reveal a change in Mn valence from 3+ in the film interior to approximately 2+ at the surfaces where considerable hydrogen infiltration occurs due to the water dissolving process. First-principles calculations show that protonation of LaMnO 3 decreases valence and Our the Mn switches the magnetic easy axis from in-plane to out-of-plane as the Mn valence approaches 2+ from its 3+ bulk value. Our work demonstrates that ultrathin freestanding films can exhibit functional properties that are absent in homogeneous materials, concomitant with their convenient compatibility with Si-based devices.

In-situ quantification of the surface roughness for facile fabrications of atomically smooth thin films

Here in this work we present an in-situ technique to quantify the layer-by-layer roughness of thin films and heterostructures by measuring the spectral profile of the reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). The characteristic features of the diffraction spot, including the vertical to lateral size ratio c/b and the asymmetrical ratio c 1 /c 2 along the vertical direction, are found to be quantitatively dependent on the surface roughness. The quantitative relationships between them are established and discussed for different incident angles of high-energy electrons. As an example, the surface roughnesses of LaCoO 3 films grown at different temperatures are obtained using such an in-situ technique, which are confirmed by the ex-situ atomic force microscopy. Moreover, the in-situ measured layer-by-layer roughness oscillations of two LaCoO 3 films are demonstrated, revealing drastically different information from the intensity oscillations. The experiments assisted with the in-situ technique demonstrate an outstanding high resolution down to similar to ~0.1 Å. Therefore, the new quantitative RHEED technique with real-time feedbacks significantly escalates the thin film synthesis efficiency, especially for achieving atomically smooth surfaces and interfaces. It opens up new prospects for future generations of thin film growth, such as the artificial intelligence-assisted thin film growth.

Benchmark CO 2 separation achieved by highly fluorinated nanoporous molecular sieve membranes from nonporous precursor via in situ cross-linking

Molecular sieve membranes with rigid micropores and CO 2 -philic functionalities within the architectures are promising candidates in CO 2 separation. However, the development of ctieve approaches for their fabrication still remains a significant challenge. In this study, an in situ cross-linking strategy is developed for the preparation of nanoporous fluorinated moleffecular sieve membranes using commercially available dense and non-porous polystyrene (M PS ) as a precursor template. Based on the dehydrative Friedel-Crafts reactions with highly fluorinated benzylic alcohols, M PS membranes are cross-linked in situ upon exposure to Brønsted acid (CF 3 SO 3 H), affording fluorinated microporous polymeric membranes with surface areas up to 523 m 2 g –1 and the presence of micropores centered at 1.1–1.3 nm as well as ultra-micropores (~0.6 nm). The obtained modified membranes exhibit good ideal CO 2 permeability of 797 barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 28.5. In addition, high fluorine content (up to 28.5 wt%) and good thermal stability made the cross-linked membranes promising candidates to produce fluorinated carbon molecular sieve membranes with improved textural properties, exhibiting surface areas up to 1020 m 2 g –1 and ultra-micropores of ~0.4 nm. These membranes achieve superior CO 2 /N 2 separation performances exceeding the Robeson upper bound limit (2008).

Coordinated Optimal Control of PV Inverters and HVAC Loads in Distribution Systems

The increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as photovoltaics (PVs) and smart buildings into distribution systems complicate power system operation and controls. This paper proposes a coordinated optimal control strategy for PV inverters and Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) loads in smart buildings to minimize the total network loss in a distribution system. For the HVAC units, we enforce minimum on and off time constraints to avoid frequent switching that can degrade the unit. The proposed control will dispatch optimal control signals of active and reactive power to PV inverters and on/off commands to HVAC units while maintaining the nodal voltage within a secure range and the temperature of HVAC units at a comfort level. The simulation results on a modified IEEE 33-node distribution system demonstrate that the proposed coordinated control scheme can reduce the network loss.
