Localized Flexoelectric Effect Around Ba(CuNb) Nano‐Clusters in Epitaxial BiFeO 3 Films for Enhancement of Electric and Multiferroic Properties

Abstract Room‐temperature (RT) multiferroic materials have received significant research attention for various potential applications; however, their properties are not suitable for real‐world implementation. In this study, a nano‐scale localized flexoelectric effect is introduced to enhance the RT multiferroic performance of epitaxial bismuth iron oxide (BiFeO 3 ; BFO) thin films by embedding 10 mol% Ba(Cu 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 (BCN) nano‐clusters into the host BFO film, which originally has a rhombohedral crystal structure. By utilizing nano‐clustering, a large out‐of‐plane coherent strain is localized around the nano‐clusters, resulting in a highly strained tetragonality of the BFO structure; subsequently, the films exhibit peculiar types of domains and domain walls, such as nano‐scale rotational vortices and antiparallel dipole configurations. These peculiar domain structures, which originate from the localized flexoelectric effect at the nano‐scale, enable excellent ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, and RT multiferroic magnetoelectric coupling. This study reveals that the local variation in the localized flexoelectric field around nano‐clusters considerably impacts the formation of unusual domain‐wall structures. This suggests that the controlled introduction of nano‐clusters with different crystal structures is promising for achieving the desired multiferroic properties.

Polarization near dislocation cores in SrTiO 3 single crystals: The role of flexoelectricity

Spontaneous polarization as large as ~28 μC/cm 2 was recently observed around the dislocation cores in non-polar SrTiO 3 bulk crystals, and its origin was attributed to the flexoelectric effect, i.e., polarization induced by strain gradients. However, the roles of flexoelectricity, relative to other electromechanical contributions, and the nature of dislocations, i.e., edge vs screw dislocations in the induced polarization, are not well understood. In this work, we study the role of flexoelectricity in inducing polarization around three types of dislocation cores in SrTiO 3 : b= a(100) edge dislocation, b= a(110) edge dislocation, and b= a(010) screw dislocation, where b is the Burgers vector. For the edge dislocations, polarization can be induced by electrostriction alone, while flexoelectricity is essential for stabilizing the symmetric polarization pattern. The shear component of the flexoelectric tensor has a dominant effect on the magnitude and spatial distribution of the flexoelectric polarization. In contrast, no polarization is induced around the b= a(010) screw dislocation through either electrostriction or flexoelectricity. Finally, our findings provide an in-depth understanding of the role of flexoelectricity in inducing polarization around dislocation cores and offer insights into the defect engineering of dielectric/ferroelectric materials.

High-performance piezoelectric composites via β phase programming

Polymer-ceramic piezoelectric composites, combining high piezoelectricity and mechanical flexibility, have attracted increasing interest in both academia and industry. However, their piezoelectric activity is largely limited by intrinsically low crystallinity and weak spontaneous polarization. Here, we propose a Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene anchoring method to manipulate the intermolecular interactions within the all-trans conformation of a polymer matrix. Employing phase-field simulation and molecular dynamics calculations, we show that OH surface terminations on the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets offer hydrogen bonding with the fluoropolymer matrix, leading to dipole alignment and enhanced net spontaneous polarization of the polymer-ceramic composites. We then translated this interfacial bonding strategy into electrospinning to boost the piezoelectric response of samarium doped Pb (Mg1/3Nb 2/3 )O 3 -PbTiO 3 /polyvinylidene fluoride composite nanofibers by 160% via Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets inclusion. With excellent piezoelectric and mechanical attributes, the as-electrospun piezoelectric nanofibers can be easily integrated into the conventional shoe insoles to form a foot sensor network for all-around gait patterns monitoring, walking habits identification and Metatarsalgi prognosis. This work utilizes the interfacial coupling mechanism of intermolecular anchoring as a strategy to develop high-performance piezoelectric composites for wearable electronics.

The role of lattice dynamics in ferroelectric switching

Reducing the switching energy of ferroelectric thin films remains an important goal in the pursuit of ultralow-power ferroelectric memory and logic devices. Here, we elucidate the fundamental role of lattice dynamics in ferroelectric switching by studying both freestanding bismuth ferrite (BiFeO 3 ) membranes and films clamped to a substrate. We observe a distinct evolution of the ferroelectric domain pattern, from striped, 71° ferroelastic domains (spacing of ~100 nm) in clamped BiFeO 3 films, to large (10’s of micrometers) 180° domains in freestanding films. By removing the constraints imposed by mechanical clamping from the substrate, we can realize a ~40% reduction of the switching voltage and a consequent ~60% improvement in the switching speed. Our findings highlight the importance of a dynamic clamping process occurring during switching, which impacts strain, ferroelectric, and ferrodistortive order parameters and plays a critical role in setting the energetics and dynamics of ferroelectric switching.
