Reversible Polymer–Metal Mechanical Transitions Enabled by Electrochemical Modulation

The mechanical properties of materials, e.g., elastic modulus and hardness, are important for many engineering applications. Here, we introduce a hierarchically ordered structure (HOS) polymer system that exhibits exceptionally large, reversible changes in mechanical behavior upon electrochemical lithiation and delithiation. Full lithiation of the HOS polymer induces a substantial mechanical transition from polymer-like to metal-like attributes, yielding a 10-fold increase in elastic modulus and a 3-fold increase in hardness, with values comparable to those of aluminum. Upon removal of Li+ ions, the elastic modulus and hardness return to nearly pristine polymer levels, and this transformation remains highly repeatable over many electrochemical cycles. Reversible transitions between polymer-like and metal-like mechanical behaviors offer a new pathway for engineering materials for applications that require tunable mechanical properties, such as soft robotics and stimuli-responsive systems.

Exploring the potential and impact of single-crystal active materials on dry-processed electrodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Roll-to-roll powder-to-film dry processing (DP) and single-crystal (SC) active materials (AMs) with many advantages are two hot topics of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, DP of SC AMs for LIBs is rarely reported. Consequently, the impact of SC AMs on dry-processed LIBs is not well understood. Herein, for the first time, via a set of experimental and theoretical studies of the conventional polycrystalline-AM- and SC-AM-based DPed electrodes (DPEs), this work not only reports a high-performance dry SC-AM cathode for LIB manufacturing, but also establishes some fundamental understanding of SC-based dry-processed electrodes, including their morphology, structure, mechanical strength, electronic conductivity and LIB electrochemical behavior. Further, the results suggest that DP of SC AMs is promising, which can dramatically improve the electrochemical kinetics at electrode level and particle level. Specifically, for the rate capability and long-term cyclability in full cells, SC DPEs exhibit a discharge specific capacity of 152.1 mAh g -1 at 1C and a capacity retention rate of 79.9 % at C/3 over 500 cycles, which are superior to those of PC DPEs (135.6 mAh g -1 and 68.3 %) at the same conditions and are further confirmed by the simulation data from the theoretical modelling study. Therefore, this comprehensive work marks a significant milestone for DP strategy and SC AMs, enlightening future research and development of LIB manufacturing.

Manufacturing Cathodes via Dry-Processing for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Conventional lithium-ion battery (LIB) electrodes are prepared through a wet slurry process with n-methyl pyrrolidone solvent, especially for cathodes. The wet slurry process encounters several disadvantages such as binder migration, electrode cracking in thick electrodes, energy intense heat-dry NMP solvent removal, and costly NMP recovery. The cost and energy consumption of coating and drying of electrode are about 11.5 % and > 46 % in LIB manufacturing, respectively. Thereby, it is essential to develop a facile roll-to-roll solvent-free LIB electrode processing for reducing the cost and energy consumption. Recently, the Maxwell-type dry processing (DP) shines new lights on LIB manufacturing, which mainly bases on dry mixing (DM) of electrode component powder followed by calendering into electrode films and laminating onto current collectors, realizing the rapid manufacturing of LIB electrodes in a powder-to-film manner for industries. This report shares some recent progress on the DP from our group. We aim to further advance the manufacturing science of DP by correlating the processing conditions with electrode properties and performance. Particularly, we investigate the effect of DM, and compression on the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) binder fiberization, porosity, mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and electrochemical behaviors of electrodes. The DM study suggests that PTFE fiberization heavily relies on the degree of DM. Insufficient DM results in poor PTFE fiberization while outrageous DM damages the formed PTFE fibers. Both negatively affect the mechanical behaviors of the electrodes and their rate capability. However, moderate DM is highly beneficial. In addition, our study of the porosity impact reveals that LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC) secondary particles can be broken into primary particles due to compression, especially at low porosity. Those fractured NMC secondary particles exhibit lower modulus. We propose that a moderate porosity of around 32% favors the electronic conductivity, charge transfer impedance and rate capability. The study of the cathodic electrolyte interphase layer of PTFE-based DPed electrode confirms that side reactions of PTFE binder due to the formation of LiF in LiClO4-based electrolyte.

Ramifications of X-Site Ion Modification in a Zero-Dimensional Piezoelectric Tetrahalozincate

Using mixtures of A, B, or X site ions in piezoelectric hybrid organic inorganic materials has been shown to be an effective strategy to improve piezoelectric properties. Here, we investigated the effect of increasing Br content within histammonium tetrachlorozincate [HistNH3Zn(Cl x Br 1–x )4] by varying the relative amounts of Cl and Br from x = 0% to 100% on nonlinear optical and piezoelectric properties. We found that the crystal structures were unchanged with Br percentages up to 100%, but the melting point of the materials changed substantially with increasing Br content. On the other hand, the nonlinear optical properties were only moderately affected with increasing Br content. The piezoelectric response of each material was measured and compared with DFT calculated values, both of which agreed that the overall the materials had relatively similar d 33 coefficients. The x = 75% Br compound had the largest magnitude d 33 value at maximum strain at both 29 °C (−97.56 pm/V) and 40 °C (−92.00 pm/V). The observed negative piezoelectric response is a rare trait that was ascribed to the large number of intermolecular interactions between lattice elements, as described by others.
