Wood Carbon Based Single-Atom Catalyst for Rechargeable Zn–Air Batteries

Low-cost and efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) bifunctional electrocatalysts are vital for the applications of rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Given the high catalytic activity of single-atom catalysts (SACs), preparing SACs on a large scale for ZABs is desirable but remains challenging. Herein, in situ formation of single-atom Fe-N-C catalysts on plate wood-based porous carbon is achieved via a facile Lewis acid pretreatment and carbonization process. Lewis acid FeCl3 pretreatment on the cell wall of wood not only produces abundant microchannels but also successfully introduces atomically dispersed Fe-N active species into the hierarchical structure. Such uniformly dispersive SACs on the hierarchical structure enhance the ORR/OER performance and durability. A ZAB using the catalyst in the cathode shows a high power density (70.2 mW cm -2 , at quasi solid state) and long-term stability. This work provides a new path for the large-scale preparation of high-performance SACs.

Re-entrance to a ferromagnetic insulator with oxygen-vacancy ordering in the La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattice

The charge-density wave is correlated with the properties in transition metal oxides, and regulating this state is important to explore the potential of oxides. Defects could modulate the local environment, in which the effect is subject to the concentration and arrangement, and an artificial arrangement of defect-ordering is highly expected to design the material properties. In this work, the ordering of oxygen vacancies with a preferred location on the (001) La/SrO plane by self-structural optimization was induced in La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattices with medium oxygen pressure during SrTiO 3 deposition, and then the ferromagnetic charge-ordering (CO)/charge-density-wave (CDW) state was formed in La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 with susceptibility to magnetic field, temperature, and superlattice configuration. In addition, re-entrance to the ferromagnetic insulator CO/CDW could be induced by a high magnetic field. The selective occupancy of oxygen vacancies on the (001) La/SrO plane and the phase fluctuation around the CO/CDW-to-ferromagnetic metal phase transition were critical to the above properties. The interfacial diffusion with atomic-level resolution to control oxygen vacancies could be used in other magnetoelectric systems and corresponding device applications.

Giant piezoelectricity in oxide thin films with nanopillar structure

High-performance piezoelectric materials are critical components for electromechanical sensors and actuators. For more than 60 years, the main strategy for obtaining large piezoelectric response has been to construct multiphase boundaries, where nanoscale domains with local structural and polar heterogeneity are formed, by tuning complex chemical compositions. We used a different strategy to emulate such local heterogeneity by forming nanopillar regions in perovskite oxide thin films. We obtained a giant effective piezoelectric coefficient d 33 , f * of ~1098 picometers per volt with a high Curie temperature of ~450°C. Our lead-free composition of sodium-deficient sodium niobate contains only three elements (Na, Nb, and O). The formation of local heterogeneity with nanopillars in the perovskite structure could be the basis for a general approach to designing and optimizing various functional materials.

An Iron-Decorated Carbon Aerogel for Rechargeable Flow and Flexible Zn–Air Batteries

Mechanically stable and foldable air cathodes with exceptional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities are key components of wearable metal-air batteries. Herein, a directional freeze-casting and annealing approach is reported for the construction of a 3D honeycomb nanostructured, N,P-doped carbon aerogel incorporating in situ grown FeP/Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles as the cathode in a flexible Zn-air battery (ZAB). The aqueous rechargeable Zn-air batteries assembled with this carbon aerogel exhibit a remarkable specific capacity of 648 mAh g -1 at a current density of 20 mA cm -2 with a good long-term durability, outperforming those assembled with commercial Pt/C+RuO 2 catalyst. Furthermore, such a foldable carbon aerogel with directional channels can serve as a freestanding air cathode for flexible solid-state Zn-air batteries without the use of carbon paper/cloth and additives, giving a specific capacity of 676 mAh g -1 and an energy density of 517 Wh kg -1 at 5 mA cm -2 together with good cycling stability. This work offers a new strategy to design and synthesize highly effective bifunctional air cathodes to be applied in electrochemical energy devices.

Solar-driven efficient methane catalytic oxidation over epitaxial ZnO/La 0.8 Sr 0.2 CoO 3 heterojunctions

Gas flaring in oil/gas drilling and gas leakage in natural gas power plant lead to significant energy loss and environmental burden. Here, solar-driven efficient methane oxidation was demonstrated under high velocity continuous flow over the ZnO/La 0.8 Sr 0.2 CoO 3 (ZnO/LSCO) heterojunctions. The ZnO/LSCO heterojunctions enable a unique epitaxial hetero-interface, which effectively regulates the electron transfer between Zn 3d -O 2p hybrid orbital in ZnO and Co e g orbital in LSCO and promotes the rapid generation and refill of oxygen vacancy with unpaired electron (V o ), thus enhancing the activity and mobility of surface lattice oxygen in ZnO/LSCO. Under solar illumination, the synergy of photothermal and photocatalytic effect boosts the reversible electron transfer in the interface, which further activates surface lattice oxygen, resulting in a ~2 times higher methane oxidation activity. Such a solar-driven system not only enables a promising pathway for emitted methane utilization, but also provides an advanced catalyst design concept of epitaxial interface construction.

Atomic-Scale Control of Magnetism at the Titanite-Manganite Interfaces

Complex oxide thin-film heterostructures often exhibit magnetic properties different from those known for bulk constituents. This is due to the altered local structural and electronic environment at the interfaces, which affects the exchange coupling and magnetic ordering. The emergent magnetism at oxide interfaces can be controlled by ferroelectric polarization and has a strong effect on spin-dependent transport properties of oxide heterostructures, including magnetic and ferroelectric tunnel junctions. In this work, using prototype La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 /BaTiO 3 heterostructures, we show that ferroelectric polarization of BaTiO 3 controls the orbital hybridization and magnetism at heterointerfaces. We observe changes in the enhanced orbital occupancy and significant charge redistribution across the heterointerfaces, affecting the spin and orbital magnetic moments of the interfacial Mn and Ti atoms. Notably, we find that the exchange coupling between Mn and Ti atoms across the interface is tuned by ferroelectric polarization from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic. Our findings provide a viable route to electrically control complex magnetic configurations at artificial multiferroic interfaces, taking a step toward low-power spintronics.
