Advanced thrust chamber technology for in-space propulsion system

Two new concepts, the afterburning technique and the spray optimization method for the purpose of upgrading the combustion efficiency and C efficiency, are examined to assess the technical merits and hurdles that need to be resolved. Details of combustion and aerodynamic processes of monomethylhydrazine and nitrogen tetroxides in a toroidal shaped combustion chamber of a variable thrust engine, devised with a wall impingement cooling system and the secondary injection of an oxidizer from the chamber wall for an afterburning, are investigated for the selected secondary injection conditions. With an appropriate injection condition, the combustion efficiency was found to be almost 23 percent higher than that of an engine without afterburning.

Non-grey radiation in a liquid rocket combustion chamber

The effects of radiation on droplets gasification in liquid rocket combustion chambers has been studied. The modeling includes a Legendre pseudo-spectral collocation approximation to solve the Radiative Transfer Equation (RTE). The band model has been utilized to account for non-grey emitting and absorbing gases present in the comustion chamber. The GEMCHIP II code has been utilized to study the fuel and oxidizer droplets combustion and interaction. The submodels within this code are capable of accounting for group combustion and conjugate effects between many droplets. The radiative model has been coupled with the GEMCHIP II code accounting for radial effects only, to provide the tool for studying the combustion-radiation coupling effects in a bipropellant system. The results indicate that the gasification/combustion process will be enhanced upstream of the chamber causing thicker flame sheet and associated higher combustion efficiency.

Numerical analysis of bipropellant combustion in orbit maneuvering vehicle thrust chamber

The combustion and aerodynamic processes of liquid-liquid bipropellant; monomethylhydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide in the combustion chamber of a variable thrust engine (VTE) have been examined to assess the flow structure, combustion characteristics, and wall heat transfer under the simulated engine operations at two power levels. The Generalized Elliptic Multi-phase flow with Chemical reaction, Heat transfer and Interfacial Processes (GEM-CHIP) code and the Bipropellant Combustion (BICOMB) code, which is the GEMCHIP algorithm reformulated in the frame work of a body fitted coordinate system, have been used for the numerical study. Combustion flow structure with non-premixed type injection that simulates the impingement type injector is predicted and the results are compared with that of the premixed injector.

Theory of droplet. Part 1: Renormalized laws of droplet vaporization in non-dilute sprays

The vaporization of a droplet, interacting with its neighbors in a non-dilute spray environment is examined as well as a vaporization scaling law established on the basis of a recently developed theory of renormalized droplet. The interacting droplet consists of a centrally located droplet and its vapor bubble which is surrounded by a cloud of droplets. The distribution of the droplets and the size of the cloud are characterized by a pair-distribution function. The vaporization of a droplet is retarded by the collective thermal quenching, the vapor concentration accumulated in the outer sphere, and by the limited percolative passages for mass, momentum and energy fluxes. The retardation is scaled by the local collective interaction parameters (group combustion number of renormalized droplet, droplet spacing, renormalization number and local ambient conditions). The numerical results of a selected case study reveal that the vaporization correction factor falls from unity monotonically as the group combustion number increases, and saturation is likely to occur when the group combustion number reaches 35 to 40 with interdroplet spacing of 7.5 diameters and an environment temperature of 500 K. The scaling law suggests that dense sprays can be classified into: (1) a diffusively dense cloud characterized by uniform thermal quenching in the cloud; (2) a stratified dense cloud characterized by a radial stratification in temperature by the differential thermal quenching of the cloud; or (3) a sharply dense cloud marked by fine structure in the quasi-droplet cloud and the corresponding variation in the correction factor due to the variation in the topological structure of the cloud characterized by a pair-distribution function of quasi-droplets.

Noise generation by ducted combustion systems

Analysis of the interaction between a zone of nonsteady combustion and its confining duct shows that resonant type oscillations occur with resulting noise intensities far greater than from corresponding unconfined flame zones. The blading action on the flow through the compressor and turbine of an engine generates discrete frequency noise which, it is found, is enhanced by the response of the combustion zone in between. Ducted combustor experiments verify the predicted resonant type noise, the amplitude and frequency of which are strongly influenced by the duct dimensions and end impedance. A convergent exit nozzle results in stronger internal resonant noise oscillations but also generates a higher jet velocity, with the attendant jet noise which exceeds noise from inside the duct at jet Mach numbers near unity.-
