Rigorous solutions for sound radiation from circular ducts with hyperbolic horns or infinite plane baffle

A rigorous treatment is presented of sound radiation from circular ducts with either a hyperbolic horn or an infinite plane baffle. In the analysis hyperboloidal wave functions are used, which are defined here, for the first time, as a class of eigensolutions of the wave equation for oblate spheroidal co-ordinates. The numerical results include the complex conversion (or reflection) coefficients and the radiation directivity for various incident wave modes, spinning modes as well as axisymmetric modes. The solutions are valid for the whole frequency range including frequencies above and below the cut-off frequencies of the duct modes involved.

Higher order mode propagation in nonuniform circular ducts

Higher order mode propagation in a nonuniform circular duct without mean flow was investigated. An approximate wave equation is derived on the assumptions that the duct cross section varies slowly and that mode conversion is negligible. Exact closed form solutions are obtained for a particular class of converging-diverging circular duct which referred to as 'circular cosh duct.' Numerical results are presented in terms of the transmission loss for the various duct shapes and frequencies. The results are applicable to multimodal propagation, single mode propagation, and sound radiation from certain types of contoured inlet ducts, or of sound propagation in a converging-diverging duct of somewhat different shape from a cosh duct.

High-frequency sound propagation in a spatially varying mean flow

An equation for acoustic ray paths in a spatially varying mean flow was examined to determine some of the characteristics of the flow gradient effects on sound propagation. In a potential flow, the acoustic rays are deflected in the direction of increasing mean flow, and the gradient of the mean flow speed is the dominant factor causing the ray deflection. In contrast, in a sheared mean flow, the vorticity is the dominant factor in deflection of the acoustic rays.

A statistical theory of sound radiation from a two-dimensional lined duct

A statistical theory coupled with a finite element theory is employed for investigation of sound radiation from a two-dimensional lined duct. The analysis does not utilize duct modes, and can be applied to a non-uniform duct with variable wall liner properties. Numerical results are presented for various shapes of the incident wave. The results are in good agreement with the Wiener-Hopf calculation for cases where the latter can be made.

An experimental study of sound radiation from hyperboloidal inlet ducts

Sound radiation from hyperboloidal inlet ducts which include a circular cylinder with plane baffle as a limiting case was investigated. Results include the polar angle variation of the pressure level and the phase of the radiated field for various frequencies and various modes incident which were produced using an electronically operated mode synthesizer. Good agreement with a rigorous theoretical prediction was found.

A statistical theory for sound radiation and reflection from a duct

A new analytical method is introduced for the study of the sound radiation and reflection from the open end of a duct. The sound is thought of as an aggregation of the quasiparticles-phonons. The motion of the latter is described in terms of the statistical distribution, which is derived from the classical wave theory. The results are in good agreement with the solutions obtained using the Wiener-Hopf technique when the latter is applicable, but the new method is simple and provides straightforward physical interpretation of the problem. Furthermore, it is applicable to a problem involving a duct in which modes are difficult to determine or cannot be defined at all, whereas the Wiener-Hopf technique is not.

Sound radiation from hyperboloidal inlet ducts

This paper presents rigorous solutions for the problem of sound radiation from various inlet ducts including hyperboloidal (or hyperbolic) inlet ducts and circular ducts with wide flange. The numerical results include the complex conversion (or reflection) coefficients and the radiation directivity for the various incident wave modes - spinning modes as well as axisymmetric modes. The analysis utilizes hyperboloidal wave functions which are defined here as a class of eigensolutions of the wave equation for oblate spheroidal coordinates, and is valid for the whole frequency range including frequencies above and below the cutoff frequencies of duct modes involved.

Reciprocity principle in duct acoustics

Various reciprocity relations in duct acoustics have been derived on the basis of the spatial reciprocity principle implied in Green's functions for linear waves. The derivation includes the reciprocity relations between mode conversion coefficients for reflection and transmission in nonuniform ducts, and the relation between the radiation of a mode from an arbitrarily terminated duct and the absorption of an externally incident plane wave by the duct. Such relations are well defined as long as the systems remain linear, regardless of acoustic properties of duct nonuniformities which cause the mode conversions.
