Simulator Of Rain In Flowing Air

Report describes relatively inexpensive apparatus that creates simulated precipitation from drizzle to heavy rain in flowing air. Small, positive-displacement pump and water-injecting device positioned at low-airspeed end of converging section of wind tunnel 10 in. in diameter. Drops injected by array entrained in flow of air as it accelerates toward narrower outlet, 15 in. downstream. Outlet 5 in. in diameter.

Shadowgraphs Of Helicopter-Rotor-Tip Vortexes

Optical apparatus produces full-scale or larger shadowgraph of tip vortexes of helicopter rotor. Stroboscope projects shadow image of helicopter rotor on large, square screen. Commercial, highly reflecting projection screen used; simply projecting image on white wall does not yield enough light for photographing vortexes with standard 35-mm camera. Apparatus adapts to use in large wind tunnels.

Thermal modeling of high rate Li-SOCl2 primary cylindrical cells

Four different heat transfer paths were separately investigated in a spirally-wound D-size cell. Thermal resistances of the relating components along each heat transfer path were calculated, and the total network of thermal resistances was constructed, resulting in the total thermal resistance of approximately 16.4 C/W at Tw = 40 C, and 12.2 C/W at Tw = 100 C. The amount of heat transferred along the radial direction, which is normal to the electrodes, was found to be about 91 percent of the total heat dissipation. Based on the present results obtained at the component level, the present D-size lithium cell may be operated at a C/2 discharge rate under normal discharge conditions below the cut-off voltage of 2.5 V.

Thermal analysis of prismatic Li-SOCl2 primary cells

A thermally efficient design for prismatic Li-SOCl2 primary cells is proposed, for application to NASA missions requiring overall power capacities of 20-22 Ah. Thermal resistances of 20 Ah capacity cells were calculated along paths parallel to and normal to the electrodes. Stacking six cells in series to achieve the required 17-28 V potential, it is found that safe operation at C/5 rates (4 A discharge) is possible, maintaining the internal cell temperature below 80 C. Higher discharge rates than C/5 are possible by decreasing the total thermal resistance via providing free spaces between cells.
