Evidence of a coupled electron-phonon liquid in NbGe 2

Whereas electron-phonon scattering relaxes the electron’s momentum in metals, a perpetual exchange of momentum between phonons and electrons may conserve total momentum and lead to a coupled electron-phonon liquid. Such a phase of matter could be a platform for observing electron hydrodynamics. Here we present evidence of an electron-phonon liquid in the transition metal ditetrelide, NbGe 2 , from three different experiments. First, quantum oscillations reveal an enhanced quasiparticle mass, which is unexpected in NbGe 2 with weak electron-electron correlations, hence pointing at electron-phonon interactions. Second, resistivity measurements exhibit a discrepancy between the experimental data and standard Fermi liquid calculations. Third, Raman scattering shows anomalous temperature dependences of the phonon linewidths that fit an empirical model based on phonon-electron coupling. We discuss structural factors, such as chiral symmetry, short metallic bonds, and a low-symmetry coordination environment as potential design principles for materials with coupled electron-phonon liquid.

Quantum spin state transitions in the spin-1 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2

We report we have grown single crystals of Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 , a spin-1 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet (ETLAF), and performed magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and thermal conductivity measurements at ultralow temperatures. The main results are as follows: (i) At zero magnetic field, Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 exhibits a magnetic ordering at 430 mK with a weak ferromagnetic moment along the $\textit{c}$ axis. This suggests a canted 120° spin structure, which is in a plane including the crystallographic $\textit{c}$ axis due to the existence of an easy-axis anisotropy and ferromagnetically stacked along the $\textit{c}$ axis. (ii) With increasing field along the $\textit{c}$ axis, a 1/3 magnetization plateau is observed, which means that the canted 120° spin structure is transformed into an up-up-down (UUD) spin structure. With even higher fields, the UUD phase further evolves into possible V and V' phases. (iii) With increasing field along the $\textit{a}$ axis, the canted 120° spin structure is possibly transformed into an umbrella phase and a V phase. Therefore Na 2 BaNi(PO 4 ) 2 is a rare example of a spin-1 ETLAF with single-crystalline form that exhibits easy-axis spin anisotropy and a series of quantum spin state transitions.

Fermi surfaces of the topological semimetal CaSn 3 probed through de Haas van Alphen oscillations

Abstract In the search of topological superconductors, nailing down the Fermiology of the normal state is as crucial a prerequisite as unraveling the superconducting pairing symmetry. In particular, the number of time-reversal-invariant momenta (TRIM) in the Brillouin zone enclosed by Fermi surfaces is closely linked to the topological class of time-reversal-invariant systems, and can experimentally be investigated. We report here a detailed study of de Haas van Alphen quantum oscillations in single crystals of the topological semimetal CaSn 3 with torque magnetometry in high magnetic fields up to 35 T. In conjunction with density functional theory based calculations, the observed quantum oscillations frequencies indicate that the Fermi surfaces of CaSn 3 enclose an odd number of TRIM, satisfying one of the proposed criteria to realize topological superconductivity. Nonzero Berry phases extracted from the magnetic oscillations also support the nontrivial topological nature of CaSn 3 .

Deconvoluting the Magnetic Structure of the Commensurately Modulated Quinary Zintl Phase Eu 11– x Sr x Zn 4 Sn 2 As 12

The structure, magnetic properties, and 151 Eu and 119 Sn Mössbauer spectra of the solid-solution Eu 11– x Sr x Zn 4 Sn 2 As 12 are presented. A new commensurately modulated structure is described for Eu 11 Zn 4 Sn 2 As 12 ( R 3 m space group, average structure) that closely resembles the original structural description in the monoclinic C 2/ c space group with layers of Eu, puckered hexagonal Zn 2 As 3 sheets, and Zn 2 As 6 ethane-like isolated pillars. The solid-solution Eu 11– x Sr x Zn 4 Sn 2 As 12 (0 < x < 10) is found to crystallize in the commensurately modulated R 3 space group, related to the parent phase but lacking the mirror symmetry. Eu 11 Zn 4 Sn 2 As 12 orders with a saturation plateau at 1 T for 7 of the 11 Eu 2+ cations ferromagnetically coupled (5 K) and shows colossal magnetoresistance at 15 K. The magnetic properties of Eu 11 Zn 4 Sn 2 As 12 are investigated at higher fields, and the ferromagnetic saturation of all 11 Eu 2+ cations occurs at ~8 T. The temperature-dependent magnetic properties of the solid solution were investigated, and a nontrivial structure–magnetization correlation is revealed. The temperature-dependent 151 Eu and 119 Sn Mössbauer spectra confirm that the europium atoms in the structure are all Eu 2+ and that the tin is consistent with an oxidation state of less than four in the intermetallic region. The spectral areas of both Eu(II) and Sn increase at the magnetic transition, indicating a magnetoelastic effect upon magnetic ordering.

Neutron scattering investigation of proposed Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions in the triangular-lattice Ising antiferromagnet TmMgGaO 4

In this study, we use a variety of neutron scattering techniques to investigate the nature of the unusual magnetism in the compound TmMgGaO 4 . The crystal structure of this material hosts a triangular lattice of Tm spins exhibiting strong geometrical frustration. Theoretical predictions have suggested an unusual topological magnetic phase transition known as a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at low temperature. By combining and comparing the various neutron scattering results, we have compelling evidence that such a transition indeed occurs at temperatures around 4 K in TmMgGaO 4 . This establishes TmMgGaO 4 as a valuable system to study Kosterlitz-Thouless physics in a dense spin system.

Complex Dirac-like Electronic Structure in Atomic Site-Ordered Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6

We report the synthesis via an indium flux method of a novel single-crystalline compound Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6 that belongs to the cubic Ir 3 Ge 7 structure type. In Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6 , the In and Ge atoms preferentially occupy, respectively, the 12d and 16f sites of the Im3¯m space group, thus creating a colored variant of the Ir 3 Ge 7 structure. Like the other compounds of the Ir 3 Ge 7 family, Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6 shows potential as a thermoelectric, displaying a relatively large power factor, PF ~ 2 mW/cm K 2 , at a temperature T ~ 225 K, albeit showing a modest figure of merit, ZT = 8 x 10 -4 , because of the lack of a finite band gap. These figures might improve through a use of chemical substitution strategies to achieve band gap opening. Remarkably, electronic band structure calculations reveal that this compound displays a complex Dirac-like electronic structure relatively close to the Fermi level. The electronic structure is composed of several Dirac type-I and type-II nodes, and even Dirac type-III nodes that result from the touching between a flat band and a linearly dispersing band. Here, this rich Dirac-like electronic dispersion suggests the possibility to observe experimentally Dirac type-III nodes and study their role in the physical properties of Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6 and related Ir 3 Ge 7 -type materials.

Noncollinear magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling in buckled honeycomb Co 4 Nb 2 O 9 : A single-crystal neutron diffraction study

Through an analysis of single-crystal neutron diffraction data, we present the magnetic structure and magnetoelectric properties of Co 4 Nb 2 O 9 under various magnetic fields. In zero field, neutron diffraction experiments below T N =27K reveal that the Co 2+ moments order in the (ab) plane without any spin canting along the c axis, manifested by the magnetic symmetry C2/c'. Along each Co chain parallel to the c axis, the moments of nearest-neighbor Co atoms order ferromagnetically with a small cant away from the next-nearest-neighbor Co moments. Under the applied magnetic field H ∥ a, three magnetic domains were aligned with their major magnetic moments perpendicular to the magnetic field with no other observable magnetic transitions. The influences of magnetic fields on the magnetic structures associated with the observed magnetoelectric coupling are discussed.

Magnetoelectric effect arising from a field-induced pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion in a rare-earth magnet

Magnetoelectric materials are attractive for several applications, including actuators, switches, and magnetic field sensors. Typical mechanisms for achieving a strong magnetoelectric coupling are rooted in transition metal magnetism. In sharp contrast, here we identify CsEr(MoO 4 ) 2 as a magnetoelectric material without magnetic transition metal ions, thus ensuring that the Er ions play a key role in achieving this interesting property. Our detailed study includes measurements of the structural, magnetic, and magnetoelectric properties of this material. Bulk characterization and neutron powder diffraction show no evidence for structural phase transitions down to 0.3 K and therefore CsEr(MoO 4 ) 2 maintains the room temperature P2/c space group over a wide temperature range without external magnetic field. These same measurements also identify collinear antiferromagnetic ordering of the Er 3+ moments below T N =0.87K. Complementary dielectric constant and pyroelectric current measurements reveal that a ferroelectric phase with a maximum polarization P~0.6 nC/cm 2 emerges when applying a modest external magnetic field, which indicates that this material has a strong magnetoelectric coupling. Finally, we argue that the magnetoelectric coupling in this system arises from a pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion induced by the magnetic field.

Observation of Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect and Exchange Interaction in Topological Insulator/Antiferromagnet Heterostructure

Integration of a quantum anomalous Hall insulator with a magnetically ordered material provides an additional degree of freedom through which the resulting exotic quantum states can be controlled. Here, an experimental observation is reported of the quantum anomalous Hall e?ect in a magnet-ically-doped topological insulator grown on the antiferromagnetic insulator Cr?O?. The exchange coupling between the two materials is investigated using ?eld-cooling-dependent magnetometry and polarized neutron re?ec-tometry. Both techniques reveal strong interfacial interaction between the antiferromagnetic order of the Cr?O? and the magnetic topological insulator, manifested as an exchange bias when the sample is ?eld-cooled under an out-of-plane magnetic ?eld, and an exchange spring-like magnetic depth pro?le when the system is magnetized within the ?lm plane. These results identify antiferromagnetic insulators as suitable candidates for the manipula-tion of magnetic and topological order in topological insulator ?lms.

Large spin-driven dielectric response and magnetoelectric coupling in the buckled honeycomb $Fe_4Nb_2O_9$

Here, we present the significant spin-driven dielectric anomaly (~40% drop) and magnetoelectric coupling near the magnetic ordering temperature in single crystal $Fe_4Nb_2O_9$ . By combining neutron and x-ray single crystal diffraction techniques, we unambiguously determined its magnetic symmetry and studied the structural phase transition at $T_S$ = 70 K. The temperature-dependent static dielectric constant is strongly anisotropic, rendering two dielectric anomalies along the $a$ axis in the hexagonal lattice with the first one coupled to the magnetic ordering around $T_N$ = 97 K and the second one accompanying with a first-order structural transition around $T_S$ = 70 K. Below $T_N$, we found that the anomalous dielectric constant is practically proportional to the square of the magnetic moment from neutron diffraction data, indicating that the exchange striction is likely responsible for the strong spin-lattice coupling. Magnetic-field-induced magnetoelectric coupling was observed and is compatible with the determined magnetic structure that is characteristic of antiferromagnetically arranged ferromagnetic chains in the honeycomb plane. We propose that such magnetic symmetry should be immune to external magnetic fields to some extent favored by the freedom of rotation of moments in the honeycomb plane, laying out a promising system to control the magnetoelectric properties by magnetic fields.

Interfacial tuning of chiral magnetic interactions for large topological Hall effects in LaMnO 3 /SrIrO 3 heterostructures

Chiral interactions in magnetic systems can give rise to rich physics manifested, for example, as nontrivial spin textures. The foremost interaction responsible for chiral magnetism is the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), resulting from inversion symmetry breaking in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. However, the atomistic origin of DMIs and their relationship to emergent electrodynamic phenomena, such as topological Hall effect (THE), remain unclear. Here, we investigate the role of interfacial DMIs in 3 d –5 d transition metal-oxide-based LaMnO 3 /SrIrO 3 superlattices on THE from a chiral spin texture. By additively engineering the interfacial inversion symmetry with atomic-scale precision, we directly link the competition between interfacial collinear ferromagnetic interactions and DMIs to an enhanced THE. The ability to control the DMI and resulting THE points to a pathway for harnessing interfacial structures to maximize the density of chiral spin textures useful for developing high-density information storage and quantum magnets for quantum information science.

Probing the low-temperature limit of the quantum anomalous Hall effect

Quantum anomalous Hall effect has been observed in magnetically doped topological insulators. However, full quantization, up until now, is limited within the sub–1 K temperature regime, although the material’s magnetic ordering temperature can go beyond 100 K. Here, we study the temperature limiting factors of the effect in Cr-doped (BiSb)2Te3 systems using both transport and magneto-optical methods. By deliberate control of the thin-film thickness and doping profile, we revealed that the low occurring temperature of quantum anomalous Hall effect in current material system is a combined result of weak ferromagnetism and trivial band involvement. Our findings may provide important insights into the search for high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall insulator and other topologically related phenomena.
