The REFSAT approach to low-cost GPS terminals

A concept utilizing a geostationary reference satellite (REFSAT) that broadcasts navigation aiding signals to low cost civil user terminals which employ the constellation of 24 NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites for position determination is described. The signal acquisition, tracking and position fixing properties of such low cost, dual channel, L-band, civil user receiver designed to receive both GPS navigation and REFSAT navigation aiding signals is presented. REFSAT reduces the cost of user equipment.

Chandrasekhar-type algorithms for fast recursive estimation in linear systems with constant parameters

In this recursive method proposed, the gain matrix for the Kalman filter and the convariance of the state vector are computed not via the Riccati equation, but from certain other equations. These differential equations are of Chandrasekhar-type. The 'invariant imbedding' idea resulted in the reduction of the basic boundary value problem of transport theory to an equivalent initial value system, a significant computational advance. Initial value experience showed that there is some computational savings in the method and the loss of positive definiteness of the covariance matrix is less vulnerable.

A contribution to the controllability of time-lag systems.

Consideration of a property of 'complete controllability' which is a particular case of complete controllability with respect to an arbitrary function. The latter concept has been studied by Popov (1970), who gave a necessary and sufficient condition of controllability in algebraic form. It is shown that the necessary condition of complete controllability with respect to an arbitrary function is also a necessary condition of the particular property of complete controllability under certain given conditions.

Performance of convolution coding concatenated with MFSK modulation in a Gaussian channel

The improvement in db due to concatenation over conventional M-ary coding is studied to reduce the probability of a bit error and to increase the available bit rate for the same system parameters of error rate, transmitter power, and range. The results of calculations for orthogonal modulation with noncoherent detection and Q-level correlator quantization are presented. It is shown that the correlator outputs are quantized to one of the Q levels, and the receiver output is a vector consisting of a list of the M correlator quantum levels. The channel has Q(M) possible outputs and M possible inputs. Optimum output is approached by increasing fine quantization
