Use of Grid-Forming Medium-Voltage Power Electronics Hub in a Microgrid Setting

This paper presents the application of a new design of a multiport, modular, medium-voltage power electronics hub (M3PE-HUB) in a microgrid setting. The M3PE-HUB system was modeled in a digital real-time simulator (DRTS) and integrated into the Banshee microgrid test system. This paper presents the preliminary DRTS simulation-based results of the M3PE-HUB system connected in a test microgrid system. Verification and validation of the M3PE-HUB architecture and controls in the test microgrid setting are the primary contributions of this work. The results of the operation during the islanding and resynchronization process indicate the feasibility of the proposed architecture in a microgrid setting. This paper also presents results for a system reconfiguration use case where the M3PE-HUB was used to reconfigure the system under a fault condition.

A Self-Organizing Nano Grid (SONG) for Energy Access Clusters

In this paper, a bottom-up dc Self-Organizing Nano Grid (SONG) for rural electrification at ultra-low-cost through a flexible and scalable topology is presented. The proposed nano grid requires no communication and uses dc-bus signaling to convey excess energy in the system through the bus voltage, allowing independent agents to conduct energy transactions based on their needs in a decentralized manner. Moreover, this article proposes a concept that uses a novel multi-source, multi-segment droop control strategy with demand coordination, allowing for dynamic self-balancing of the system under fluctuating operating conditions. The unique use of a surplus photovoltaic (PV) power droop mode precisely estimates energy availability to minimize load chattering that helps in stabilizing the dc-bus. In addition, this architecture uses standard dc/dc converters for a low-cost, modular, Plug and Play ( PnP ) solution with highly automated operation, enabling local assembly, operation, and maintenance by non-technical personnel. The proposed SONG concept was validated in simulation and with a 700W, laboratory-scale, custom made nano grid system. The simulation and experimental test cases show the feasibility of the SONG system by demonstrating the proposed multi-source, multi-segment droop control strategy without load chattering under varying operating conditions.

Adaptive Internal Model Based Current Control with Embedded Active Damping of a Three-Phase Grid-Connected Inverter with LCL Filter for PV Application

This paper presents an internal model based controller with embedded active damping for a three-phase grid-connected inverter with LCL filter. A strategy to control the grid current based on the internal model principle is presented in this paper. It is known that a third-order LCL filter apart from providing better attenuation also poses the problem of initiating unwanted resonance oscillations especially during transients. To address this problem, an active damping strategy based on virtual resistance emulation on the grid side filter is implemented. Also, to ensure effective active damping, an online parameter update strategy is implemented for the filter parameters. The proposed method provides better attenuation to oscillation damping and achieves good tracking performance without adversely affecting the bandwidth. The architecture is verified based on computer simulations via MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain and various important case study results are presented.

A Nonlinear Direct Power Controller for a Three-Phase Grid-Connected Inverter with Online Parameter Update for PV Application

This work proposes a nonlinear direct power controller for a three-phase grid-connected inverter for photovoltaic application. Grid-connected converters for solar applications require advanced control architectures to ensure optimal operation and extraction of maximum power from the photovoltaic arrays. Therefore, to ensure this, a nonlinear power controller architecture has been proposed to extract the maximum power from the solar arrays and to achieve the most optimal operation. To further improve the performance, a parameter update scheme has been utilized which is based on model reference adaptive system. The latter helps to accomplish not only good dynamic response but also excellent tracking performance. The overall control come estimation architecture is verified based on computer simulations via MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain and various important case study results are presented.

Control and Grid Support Function Evaluation for a Three-Phase Back-to-Back Modular Multilevel Converter System

This paper focuses on the evaluation of advanced inverter controls for a 500kW back-to-back (B2B), silicon carbide, multilevel modular converter (MMC) used as a direct-connected medium-voltage grid intertie. A decentralized hierarchical controller architecture for the MMC system is presented, which uses the main controller to implement higher level grid interconnection functions per the IEEE 1547–2018 standards and the local controllers to execute lower level closed-loop functionality of the MMC stages. This paper presents and elaborates on the grid functionalities are elaborated and presented. The back-to-back converter system is equipped with local controllers and their corresponding functionalities are presented. Case study results for the corresponding functionalities presented show the effectiveness of the proposed architecture. To enhance the operation capabilities of the system, a parameter update scheme has been implemented and utilized in unison with the controller.

Operation and Control of Soft Switching Solid State Transformer as a Virtual Synchronous Machine for Photovoltaic Application

Possibility for control and operation of a three-phase solid state soft switching transformer based as a virtual synchronous machine or synchronverter has been investigated in this paper. The soft switching solid state transformer is used as an interface between the ac grid and a photovoltaic power generation unit supported by a battery bank. The control architecture investigated in this paper is that of a synchronverter to achieve inertial support to the grid and local loads. The operation of the soft switching solid state transformer has also been investigated as a V S M during unbalanced/distorted grid voltage condition. Control objective to achieve oscillation free power transfer between the ports (photovoltaic, battery and grid) has been achieved. The presented architecture has been verified for several important case studies via numerical simulations based on MATLAB/Simulink domain.
