High-temperature, high-pressure oxygen metering valve

A control valve includes a body defining a central cavity arranged between a fluid inlet and outwardly-diverging first and second fluid outlets respectively disposed in a common transverse plane. A valve member is arranged in the cavity for rotation between first and second operating positions where a transverse fluid passage through the valve member alternatively communicates the fluid inlet with one or the other of the fluid outlets. To minimize fluid turbulence when the valve member is rotated to an alternate operating position, the fluid passage has a convergent entrance for maintaining the passage in permanent communication with the fluid inlet as well as an oblong exit opening with spaced side walls for enabling the exit opening to temporarily span the first and second fluid outlets as the valve member is turned between its respective operating positions.

Apparatus For Tests Of Embrittlement By Hydrogen

Test apparatus exposes disk specimens to hydrogen in controlled, repeatable way simulating conditions in use. Disk specimen constitutes thin wall between pressure and vacuum chambers. Test proceeds until hydrogen weakens disk enough that it ruptures. Aluminum impact plate absorbs debris from ruptured disk. Apparatus replicates aspects of service environments relevant to embrittlement by hydrogen in such equipment as storage tanks, valves, and fluid-handling components containing hydrogen at high absolute or gauge pressure. Hydrogen inside permeates stressed material and produces gradient of concentration as hydrogen diffuses through material to low-pressure side.

Variable-Orifice Oxygen-Flow Regulator

Variable-orifice flow-control valve switchable between fully and partially opened positions. Straight-through flow patch minimizes high-speed impacts of entrained particles, reducing erosion and accidental ignition. Designed for use with oxygen, also used with variety of liquids and gases.

Variable orifice flow regulator

A flow regulator for high-pressure fluids at elevated temperatures includes a body having a flow passage extending between inlet and outlet openings. First and second orifice members are arranged in the flow passage so at least one of the orifice members can be moved transversely in relation to the flow passage between one operating position where the two orifice openings are aligned for establishing a maximum flow rate of fluids flowing through the flow passage and at least one other operating position in which the two openings are moderately misaligned with one another for establishing a predetermined reduced flow rate of fluids flowing through the flow passage.

Design of an ignition-resistant, high-pressure, high-temperature oxygen valve

A novel valve for high-pressure/high-temperature flowing oxygen, whose materials can be susceptible to ignition and combustion when particles traveling in the gas stream impact their surfaces, has been designed at NASA-White Sands with a view to ensuring ignition resistance and economy of fabrication, as well as adequate performance. The design, which is predicated on a variable segmented orifice, and follows such general design criteria as careful configuration of the gas flow path and suitable selection of ignition-resistant materials, met all design requirements under both normal and worst-case conditions.
