Piezoelectric Field Enhanced Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Susceptibilities in Wurtzite GaN/AlGaN Quantum Wells

Second-order nonlinear optical processes including second-harmonic generation, optical rectification, and difference-frequency generation associated with intersubband transitions in wurtzite GaN/AlGaN quantum well (QW) are investigated theoretically. Taking into account the strain-induced piezoelectric (PZ) effects, we solve the electronic structure of the QW from coupled effective-mass Schrodinger equation and Poisson equation including the exchange-correlation effect under the local-density approximation. We show that the large PZ field in the QW breaks the symmetry of the confinement potential profile and leads to large second-order susceptibilities. We also show that the interband optical pump-induced electron-hole plasma results in an enhancement in the maximum value of the nonlinear coefficients and a redshift of the peak position in the nonlinear optical spectrum. By use of the difference-frequency generation, THz radiation can be generated from a GaN/Al(0.75)Ga(0.25)N with a pump laser of 1.55 micron.

Normal modes in an overmoded circular waveguide coated with lossy material

The normal modes in an overmoded waveguide coated with a lossy material are analyzed, particularly for their attenuation properties as a function of coating material, layer thickness, and frequency. When the coating material is not too lossy, the low-order modes are highly attenuated even with a thin layer of coating. This coated guide serves as a mode suppressor of the low-order modes, which can be particularly useful for reducing the radar cross section of a cavity structure such as a jet engine inlet. When the coating material is very lossy, low-order modes fall into two distinct groups: highly and lowly attenuated modes. However, as a/lambda (a = radius of the cylinder; lambda = the free-space wavelength) increases, the separation between these two groups becomes less distinctive. The attenuation constants of most of the low-order modes become small and decrease as a function of lambda-squared/a-cubed.

Scattering of waves from periodic surfaces

In order to study the scattering of waves from periodic surfaces, the basic grating equations are reviewed, and a general approach for scattering from impenetrable and penetrable media is formulated. Three analytical methods for scattering on a conducting sinusoidal surface for both TE and TM polarized waves are compared. In The Masel, Merrill, and Miller (MMM) method for quantum scattering of atoms (1975, 1976), the surface field expansions are expressed in terms of Fourier series. The Modified Physical Optics (MPO) method (DeSanto, 1975; Whitman and Schwering, 1977) uses surface field expansions consisting of a leading term proportional to the physical optics approximation multiplied by a Fourier series expansion. The Waterman's Plane Harmonics (WPH) approach (1975) makes use of basis functions which are downward plane harmonics evaluated on the surface. The MMM method proved to be the most efficient one in terms of rate and range of convergence. For dielectric media with periodic rough surfaces, an improved method is developed for calculating the reflected and transmitted powers, and the results are compared with experimental data obtained at optical frequencies.
