Impact of ionization and transport on pedestal density structure in DIII-D and Alcator C-Mod

Abstract This paper investigates the role of ionization on the pedestal structure using both measurements and modeling for H-mode plasmas on DIII-D and Alcator C-Mod to enhance our ability to predict pedestal behavior in future pilot plants. The impact of the neutral penetration depth on the pedestal density is investigated using dimensionally matching hydrogen and deuterium DIII-D H-mode discharges at low and high electron density. The DIII-D Lyman- α diagnostic measurements show that hydrogen neutrals penetrate deeper inside the plasma on both the high field and low field side, while the pedestal electron density structure is similar for both isotopes. However, as the opaqueness increases we observe that the pedestal density gradient becomes stiff, similar to prior observations on DIII-D and C-Mod (Mordijck 2020 Nuclear Fusion 60 082006). In addition, these results also confirm prior measured and modeled poloidal asymmetries in neutral densities, indicating that to make transport predictions, 2D neutral modeling is necessary. The first direct validation of SOLPS-ITER for the measured brightness, emissivity and neutral densities for three different confinement regimes on C-Mod is introduced. The SOLPS-ITER model shows good agreement, within the constrains of the model for all regimes. In addition, a comparison of SOLPS-ITER modeling for DIII-D and C-Mod shows that as opaqueness increases, the role of divertor fueling and thus poloidal asymmetries in the neutral density profiles decreases. Based on these experimental and modeling results we estimate the size of a potential particle pinch using typical values for the diffusion coefficient for both DIII-D and C-Mod H-mode discharges.

Density dependence of the excitation gaps in an undoped Si/SiGe double-quantum-well heterostructure

In this work, we report low-temperature magneto-transport measurements of an undoped Si/SiGe asymmetric double quantum well heterostructure. The density in both layers is tuned independently utilizing top and bottom gates, allowing the investigation of quantum wells at both imbalanced and matched densities. Integer quantum Hall states at total filling factor v T =1 and v T =2 are observed in both density regimes, and the evolution of their excitation gaps is reported as a function of the density. The v T =1 gap evolution departs from the behavior generally observed for valley splitting in the single layer regime. Furthermore, by comparing the v T =2 gap to the single particle tunneling energy, Δ SAS , obtained from Schrödinger–Poisson (SP) simulations, evidence for the onset of spontaneous interlayer coherence is observed for a relative filling fraction imbalance smaller than ~50%.

Post-growth modulation doping by ion implantation

Modulation doping is a commonly adopted technique to create two-dimensional (2D) electrons or holes in semiconductor heterostructures. One constraint, however, is that the intentional dopants required for modulation doping are controlled and incorporated during the growth of heterostructures. Here, using undoped strained germanium quantum wells as the model material system, we show that modulation doping can be achieved post-growth of heterostructures by ion implantation and dopant-activation anneals. The carrier density is controlled ex situ by varying the ion fluence and implant energy, and an empirical calibration curve is obtained. While the mobility of the resulting 2D holes is lower than that in undoped heterostructure field-effect transistors built using the same material, the achievable carrier density is significantly higher. Potential applications of this modulation-doping technique are discussed.

Organics in Comets: Radio Observations of Comet C/2007 N3 (Lulin)

We used the Kitt Peak 12m (KP12M) and the Submillimeter Telescope (SMT) of the Arizona Radio Observatory to observe comet C/2007 N3 (Lulin). Several molecules (e.g. H2CO, HCN and CS) were clearly detected throughout the observing run. Searches were made for new molecules and cyclopropenylidene (c-C3H2) emission was detected for the first time in a comet.

Millimeter and Submillimeter Observations of Comet 103P/Hartley 2

The close approach (0.12 AU) of Comet 103P/Hartley 2 to the Earth only S days prior to perihelion provides a unique opportunity to probe the chemical composition of this object. We will employ the Arizona Radio Observatory's Kitt Peak 12m (KPH12M) and the Submillimeter Telescope (SMT) for observations of multiple molecular species and their isotopologs towards the comet. There will also be an attempt to monitor this object during the EPOXI (Extrasolar Planet Observation. and Deep Impact Extended Investigation) flyby mission, which will obtain high resolution infrared spectra, for a comparison of the molecular inventory and a more accurate assessment of the abundances, sources (e.g. jets or cometismals), and chemistry.
