Cryogenic Heat Transfer System

Disclosed herein is a cryogenic heat transfer system capable of transferring 50 W or more at cryogenic temperatures of 100.degree. K or less for use with cryocooler systems. In an embodiment, a cryogenic heat transfer system comprises a refrigerant contained within an inner chamber bound by a condenser in fluid communication with an evaporator through at least one flexible conduit, the condenser in thermal communication with the cold station of a cryocooler, and the evaporator positionable in thermal communication with a heat source, typically a radiation shield of a cryogenic chamber. A process to remove heat from a cryogenic chamber is also disclosed.

Magnetic Shield for Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerators (ADR)

A new method was developed for creating a less expensive shield for ADRs using 1018 carbon steel. This shield has been designed to have similar performance to the expensive vanadium permendur shields, but the cost is 30 to 50% less. Also, these shields can be stocked in a variety of sizes, eliminating the need for special forgings, which also greatly reduces cost.

Cryogenic Caging for Science Instrumentation

A method has been developed for caging science instrumentation to protect from pyro-shock and EDL (entry, descent, and landing) acceleration damage. Caging can be achieved by immersing the instrument (or its critical parts) in a liquid and solidifying the liquid by cooling. After the launch shock and/or after the payload has landed, the solid is heated up and evaporated.
