High-pressure high-temperature synthesis of NdRe 2

In this study, we report the synthesis of a new cubic neodymium-rhenium metallic alloy NdRe 2 through the utilization of high pressure and laser heating in a diamond anvil cell. NdRe 2 crystallizes in the Fd$\overline{3}$m space group with a lattice parameter equal to 7.486 (2) Å and Z = 8 at 24 (1) GPa and 2,200 (100) K. It was studied using high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the cubic MgCu 2 structure type. Its successful synthesis further proves that high-pressure high-temperature conditions can be used to obtain alloys holding a Laves phase structure. Ab initio calculations were done to predict the mechanical properties of the material. We also discuss the usage of extreme conditions to synthesize and study materials present in the nuclear waste.

The synthesis of novel lanthanum hydroxyborate at extreme conditions

The novel structure of lanthanum hydroxyborate La 2 B 2 O 5 (OH) 2 was synthesized by the reaction of partially hydrolyzed lanthanum and boron oxide in a diamond anvil cell under high-pressure/high-temperature (HPHT) conditions of 30 GPa and ~2,400 K. The single-crystal X-ray structure determination of the lanthanum hydroxyborate revealed: P$\overline{3}$c1 , a = 6.555(2) Å, c = 17.485(8) Å, Z = 6, R 1 = 0.056. The three-dimensional structure consists of discrete planar BO 3 groups and three crystallographically different La ions: one is surrounded by 9, one by 10, and one by 12 oxygen anions. The band gap was estimated using ab initio calculations to be 4.64 eV at ambient pressure and 5.26 eV at 30 GPa. The current work describes the novel HPHT lanthanum hydroxyborate with potential application as a deep-ultraviolet birefringent material.

Reflectance of rhenium as a function of pressure in a diamond anvil cell

We have measured the reflectance of rhenium in the visible region to pressures up to 100 GPa in a diamond anvil cell (DAC). By photographing the reflecting surface, we visually show that there are challenges to obtaining accurate values in a DAC for several reasons, including cupping of the diamonds and roughening of the surface with the increase in pressure. We propose some useful procedures, such as careful alignment of the incident light and using thin gaskets to minimize cupping of the diamonds as well as measurement in the central region of the diamond culet. We also show that knowledge of the reflectance of rhenium can overcome the problem of absorption of light by diamonds when studying the reflectance of materials at high pressure in a DAC.

Stability of the peroxide group in BaO 2 under high pressure

Alkaline earth metal peroxides are typical examples of ionic compounds containing polyanions. We herein report a stable BaO 2 phase at high pressure up to 130 GPa found via a first-principles computational structure searches and high-pressure experimental investigations. The identified monoclinic structure (space group C2/m) can be derived by sublattice distortions of Ba atoms and peroxide groups associated with the phonon mode softening of the lower-pressure Cmmm structure. Contrary to the previous expectation of polymerization of the peroxide group at elevated pressure, the new phase retains the peroxide group and interestingly exhibits an insulating behavior demonstrating an increase of the band gap under compression. Our synchrotron XRD measurements could not distinguish between Cmmm and C2/m BaO 2 definitively because the difference in XRD patterns is very subtle. However, our data do not show any sign of polymerization transition up to 120 GPa. Raman spectra of the O-O peroxide vibration show a small anomaly in frequency at 110 GPa, which is qualitatively similar to that predicted theoretically due to the Cmmm to C2/m phase transition thus supporting the predicted transformation.
