Transition regime droplet growth and evaporation - An integrodifferential variational approach

A variational principle based on the integrodifferential form of the Boltzmann equation, which allows very general forms of the collision integral and of the boundary operator, has been used to compute the mass flux to a spherical particle. For simplicity the problem has been restricted to the one-speed, constant cross-section approximation, the black sphere problem of neutron transport theory. Using the Hilbert expansion of the solution far from the sphere as a trial function leads to a rational expression in the inverse Knudsen number for the extrapolation distance, which is simply related to the number flux to the sphere. A five-term expansion gives results that are no more than 6 percent in error when compared to an accurate numerical solution. The technique can be applied to other forms of the collision model and other boundary conditions.

On the temporal development of a plasma sheath

This work studies a one-dimensional model for the time-dependent behavior caused by placing an uncharged conducting surface in contact with a uniform equilibrium plasma. Both the probe potential and plasma response are unknown a priori but are specified through a set of self-consistent model equations and boundary conditions. Some numerical and analytical consequences of this model are investigated. In particular, such issues are considered as (1) the formation and expansion of a quasi-neutral region connecting the non-neutral sheath to the distant undisturbed plasma; (2) the validity of assuming the existence of a sheath edge; and (3) the role of both static and dynamic Bohm criteria in the theory of unsteady sheath development.

Analytical study of the time dependent spacecraft-plasma interaction

A study of the time dependent interaction of an initially uniform equilibrium plasma with a plane conducting surface was made in order to achieve a more complete understanding of the dynamics of the charging process and of the approach to the floating potential on the surface. Numerical solutions of the cold ion equations of motion in conjunction with equilibrium electrons and Poisson's equation show the formation of an ion-rich sheath near the surface and the coupling of the non-neutral region to the undisturbed plasma through a quasineutral rarefaction. Analytical treatment of the quasineutral region showed excellent agreement (within 1 percent) with the numerical results.
